Adele‘s “Someone like You” is a beautiful pop ballad that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with classic rock music. However, a 1950s rock star inspired the tune. Interestingly, Adele said the same star paved the way for “Rolling in the Deep.”
Adele’s ‘Someone like You’ was inspired by 1 of Elvis Presley’s contemporaries
Dan Wilson is a professional songwriter who has a background in 1990s alternative rock. He was part of the band Semisonic, which is most known for their one-hit wonder “Closing Time.” He’s also known for co-writing Adele’s “Someone like You,” which is probably her most famous song besides the seminal “Rolling in the Deep.”
During a 2021 interview with American Songwriter, Wilson recalled writing “Someone like You.” “After we listened to a bunch of [1950s rock ‘n’ roll star] Wanda Jackson songs on YouTube, we went to the main room of the studio where the piano is.

Adele‘s “Someone like You” is a pop masterpiece. Interestingly, it was co-written by the “Rolling in the Deep” singer and a 1990s alternative rock star. The star in question explained how he came to work with Adele.
Adele’s ‘Someone like You’ wouldn’t exist without a major rap producer
Dan Wilson is a rock musician who was part of the band Semisonic. That band is most known for the 1990s alternative rock/easy-listening hit “Closing Time.” “Closing Time” displays some of the same no-frills emotionality that “Someone like You” has, and both songs are built around deceptively simple piano melodies. Listen to either song once and you’ll remember it for the rest of your life.
During a 2021 interview with American Songwriter, Wilson discussed how he came to work with the “Rumor Has It” singer before she became a star. “Adele and I met for the first time...

In her 2022 book Black Country Music: Listening for Revolutions, author Francesca T. Royster devotes an entire chapter to Tina Turner — who died Wednesday at 83 — and her complicated relationship with country music. Despite recording a series of country songs by Dolly Parton, Hank Snow, and Kris Kristofferson for her 1974 solo debut Tina Turns the Country On!, the album remains a curiosity, or entirely unknown, by today’s country music listener. What’s more, Nashville and the genre have yet to embrace Turner the way it has other country-adjacent icons like Ray Charles,...

The hit 2011 comedy movie Bridesmaids has a great soundtrack featuring songs by a wide range of artists, from Fiona Apple to AC/DC to Smokey Robinson. In the film, Kristen Wiig stars as Annie, whose life unravels when her best friend Lillian gets engaged and chooses her to be the maid of honor, but Annie faces fierce competition from Lillian’s snobbish new friend, Helen Harris III. The Bridesmaids soundtrack uses music to reflect the emotions of its characters as they find love, force themselves to grow up, and repair their friendships. Every major plot point in the movie is accompanied by the perfect song.
The film was met with universal critical acclaim and grossed more than $300 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), proving that female-led comedies can be just as successful as male-led ones, and awards season buzz followed. Rare for the comedy genre, Bridesmaids earned an Oscar nomination...

In early 2017, Wanda Jackson showed up late to a scheduled writing session in Nashville with Angaleena Presley and Vanessa Olivarez. Jackson, then in her late Seventies, explained to her new co-writers that she’d fallen while getting off the plane from her native Oklahoma City and showed them some of the bruising on her legs and face. Presley showered the rockabilly legend with gratitude for making the trip despite her injuries, when, as Presley recalls, “the most shit-eating grin I’d ever seen billowed across her legendary face.”

She’s been dubbed “the sweet lady with the nasty voice,” and anyone who has met her and had seen her perform live can appreciate the dichotomy of that statement. Wanda Jackson, the undisputed Queen of Rockabilly Music, bridged nascent rock & roll with traditional country in the Fifties, then proceeded to blow up that bridge with a one-of-a-kind voice like spring-loaded dynamite wrapped in sandpaper.
The 81-year-old Jackson, who recently announced her retirement from performing after more than 60 years, has had an ardent following not only in the U.S.

Roy Clark, the legendary guitarist and singer, Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member, Grammy, Acm and Cma award winner and co-host of the “Hee Haw” television series, died today at the age of 85 due to complications from pneumonia at home in Tulsa, Okla.
His starring stint on the at times deliberately corny “Hee Haw” television show belied his stellar musicianship and deep pedigree as a country-music pioneer, particularly the “Bakersfield” sound of the late 1950s and early 1960s in which he was deeply involved with fellow picker Buck Owens, who also appeared on the show. With the later rise of country stars ranging from Emmylou Harris and Dwight Yoakam to Brad Paisley and Keith Urban, Clark’s vast influence has received its proper due. If you think country music is all about love and pickup trucks, then it's time to take a walk on the dark side of a genre where houses with abusive husbands are routinely blown up and you don't want to imagine what's lurking at the bottom of the river. From women who have had more than enough from their lying, cheating spouses to a boy named Sue hellbent on finding his scoundrel of a father, these are some of the best country songs about revenge. Some of these anthems are funny - like Travis Tritt offering his ex a quarter when she comes crawling back to him - but many of them will send a chill down your spine.
Just remember: dusty country roads hold plenty of secrets, and before you go seeking revenge, you might want to channel Tritt instead of Carrie Underwood, no matter how jaw-dropping her anthems about making men pay are.

Jim Jarmusch hasn’t shared any news about his next film project, but the writer-director of 2016’s “Paterson” recently released some new original music from his rock band, Sqürl. The group’s fourth mini-album, “Ep #260,” features five songs, only one of which includes vocals – “Gates of Ishtar.” The heavily instrumental music sounds a lot like a film score, which makes sense considering Sqürl first came together to compose the soundtrack for Jarmusch’s 2009 crime-drama “The Limits of Control.” The band’s first name was Bad Rabbit.

15. Stranger by the Lake
Directed by Alain Guiraudie
Written by Alain Guiraudie
France
Though Stranger by the Lake premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival (and appeared on Sound On Sight’s best of 2013 list), it finally reached North American audiences in January of this year. Alain Guiraudie’s stunning noir-tinged thriller is set entirely against the backdrop of a secluded lake–known to locals as a popular gay cruising spot. A tale of murder complicated by intense sexual obsession (garnering equal parts praise and criticism for its frank depiction of unsimulated gay sex) it accomplishes the rare feat of subtly guiding the way we pay attention to details as we watch. The film’s deceptively simple geography is mapped out as much aurally (and orally) as visually. By the time of the pulse-pounding climax, Guiraudie has masterfully taken hold of all of our senses in an ever-tightening claustrophobic grip.

This week on Sordid Cinema, the demented stepchild to the Sound On Sight flagship podcast – we sit down and discuss Director/co-writer Zack Parker’s second feature Proxy, about a pregnant woman who enters a strange triangle of violence and paranoia. After which we review Only Lover Left Alive, which finds writer-director Jim Jarmusch adding a typically offbeat entry to the vampire genre. Joining us this week is Sos contributors Cody Lang and Deepayan Sengupta. All this and more, on the longest running genre film podcast.

Early 20th century French composer Nadia Boulanger once said: "A great work of art is made out of a combination of obedience and liberty." It is safe to say the first ladies of rock-n-roll were no classical composers, shoving obedience to the side as they pursued their own ways to be free in a field dominated by men. When Amy Winehouse died on year ago, the music community immediately began to mourn one of the most unique voices the industry has ever heard. Soulful and full of vintage, beehived bravado, Winehouse played by her own rules, all the way up until July 23, 2011.
Shortly after her death, the tributes from those closest to her began pouring in. It kicked off with her longtime pal and collaborator Mark Ronson remembering his friend by performing their song, “Valerie.” During the performance, four days after her death, he shared, “She is my sister, wherever she is.”

The following month, Coldplay mashed up her star-making “Rehab” with their aptly titled track, “Fix You.” Weeks later, George Michael remembered the star at his show in Prague. He played her song “Love Is a Losing Game.” But, before he sang it,...

Justin Townes Earle has kept busy with touring and releasing albums over the course of the last few years, but he recently took time to step into the production booth to help Wanda Jackson with her latest album. Titled Unfinished Business, the album will be Jackson’s 31st studio release, following last year’s Jack White-produced The Party Ain’t Over. It will also mark Earle’s debut as a producer....

It takes a pretty special person to claim a title that includes descriptors like “first,” “sex symbol,” and “dated Elvis Presley,” but Wanda Jackson’s up for the task. The 75-year-old Queen Of Rockabilly is back with a new record, her 31st. Unfinished Business will be released Oct. 9 and includes covers of Woody Guthrie's "California Stars" and Bobby and Shirley Womack's "It's All Over Now," supplemented with a dose of country and blues originals. After Jack White produced her last record, The Party Ain’t Over, Jackson’s apparently grown fond of the youngsters, tapping fellow ...

Performing solo just never seemed to be Jack White's thing. In his years leading the White Stripes before they disbanded in 2011, you always got the sense that they were a duo more for appearance's sake - just because he liked it that way - than a real creative partnership. (Sorry, Meg.) Even when he did side projects, he chose to work in other bands (the Raconteurs, the Dead Weather) and produce other artists (from Loretta Lynn to Wanda Jackson). With Blunderbuss, though, White finally earns his solo stripes. The album doesn't represent a radical departure - from thumping garage...

It’s a struggle to evaluate Jack White’s album output independent of what he’s done with his storied music career thus far. His former flame The White Stripes have now dissolved, evidently from bandmate/ex-wife Meg White’s reluctance of the lifestyle. He continues playing in on- and off-again brotherhood in the Raconteurs, and barks back at The Kills’ Alison Mosshart in Dead Weather. Aside from his bands, he’s built a Nashville-based vinyl/singles mini-empire and produced for a bevy of new and veteran artists – from Loretta Lynn to the Black Belles, Wanda Jackson to another ex-, Karen Elson. Of his contemporaries in influence...

AMC has debuted the latest trailer for the upcoming fifth season of "Mad Men." Like most of the marketing for the show the spot offers no insight into the new season, it still manages to makes one eager for the return of Don, Peggy, Roger and the rest of the gang. Set to Wanda Jackson's 1957 song, "Did You Miss Me?," the trailer offers glimpses at our favorite characters doing some of the things they do best, like staring pensively, smoking cigarettes and making out on couches. For use on external sites w/exclusive video premieres. brightcove.createExperiences(); The spot reminds us of all of the great, morally conflicted times we have shared together with the employees of Sterling Cooper, their family and friends: the illicit affairs, the co-worker schemes, the secret pregnancies and the ill-advised marriage proposals. Who else can't wait for March 25th?...

Since the last Mad Men episode aired on television in 2010, all sorts of crazy things have happened: The Republican primaries, the rise of Adele, the year 2011. A new advertisement for the show’s return cheekily notes the passage of time by playing Wanda Jackson’s “Did You Miss Me” over scenes from Mad Men past. It doesn’t reveal anything about the plot of the new season, which means we still can’t confirm the rumors that this season of Mad Men will take place in an alternate-universe 1969 where Don Draper has to sell moon rocks to Martians. Watch the...

There are some artists who seem to just get hipper as they get older and Jack White seems to connect with each one of them. First it was Loretta Lynn and then Wanda Jackson. Now, White has linked with Tom Jones, whom we were just raving about in our list of top concerts of 2011. White recently told Mojo (via twentyfourbit) that the latest 45 from his label, Third Man Records, will be Jones performing “Jezebel”and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil (Is Going On).” White told the British magazine, “He impressed the shit out of everybody.” Jones previously recorded "Jezebel" for his 2002...

Before I tell you about the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul concert that will be airing tonight on VH1 at 9/8 C, I want to make something clear. I am an employee of VH1. Obviously. However, the raves you are about to read for this show, which I was lucky enough to attend last night at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, have nothing to do with my employment at this fine company. Because really, of any event I’ve ever had to go to for work, this was above and beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. I almost want to take my paycheck this week and just tear it up as a thank you. (Shame I laminate my paychecks otherwise I seriously would.) Now last time I went to Divas, I wore a full-length gown and got my hair twisted into a prom updo, because I thought that was a kind of funny,...
