Gangster movies often have a dedicated audience, but some great films in the genre fail to perform well at the box office. Movies like "The Hot Rock" and "The Outfit" suffered financially, despite their unique stories and talented performances. "Scarface" and "Miller's Crossing" faced challenges including bans and competition, resulting in disappointing box office results.
While gangster movies rarely fail since they don't require huge budgets (and there's almost always an audience for them), that doesn't mean there haven't been a few that bombed at the box office. The gangster genre has always held a certain allure, pulling in huge crowds with fascinating tales of crime, control, and corruption. The best mob movies shine a spotlight on unique criminal underworlds, some of which are based on true stories, and they almost always have immoral but still lovable lead characters. Whether it's Goodfellas or The Godfather, many of the movies considered...

Ray Stevenson died on location in Italy this week while working on the film Cassino in Ischi. In it, he plays Nic Cassino, who appears to be the title character. But throughout his career the actor was renowned for strong supporting roles. Stevenson exemplified this “one for all” spirit as Porthos in The Three Musketeers (2011) and honed it through The Book of Eli (2010), King Arthur (2004), the Thor movies, and the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series, Ashoka. He was at his most supportive, even as a lead character, when he played legionnaire Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome. Pullo was a warrior with a heart of gold, but at one point he could also be the second-hand-man to an early version of a mob kingpin.
But Stevenson was second to no one in the role of Danny Greene, the titular character of writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2011 gangster-genre love letter, Kill the Irishman.

Ray Stevenson, a towering and imposing character actor best known for starring roles in “Punisher: War Zone” and the “Rome” television show, has died at the age of 58. While his passing has been confirmed by his publicists, the cause of death is currently undisclosed.
George Raymond Stevenson was born in Lisburn, Ireland, on May 25, 1964. He was the second of three sons, and his father was a Royal Air Force pilot. He moved to England at the age of 8 and eventually attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He graduated at the age of 29. Stevenson had been a regular fixture at the movies and on television since the early 1990s.
His breakout movie role came in 1998’s “The Theory of Flight,” in which he played a gigolo tasked with helping Helena Bonham Carter’s character lose her virginity. His most notable big screen roles include the title role in Lexi Alexander...

It’s time for a new episode of our Revisited video series, and with this one we’re taking a moment to pay tribute to one of the most iconic horror hosts of all time, Elvira. The movie we’re covering is the 1988 horror comedy Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (watch it Here) – the Halloween season seemed like a perfect time to show Elvira some love – and you can find out all about it in the embed above!
Directed by James Signorelli from a screenplay written by Sam Egan, John Paragon, and Cassandra Peterson (a.k.a. Elvira herself), Elvira: Mistress of the Dark has the following synopsis:
The late night TV scream queen of horror makes her debut as a movie star in this manic comedy that is full of laughs. The mega-busted terror queen descends descends upon a conservative Massachusetts town to sell her late aunt’s estate.

We love Cassandra Peterson, a smart woman who made a go of horror host work in the tough Los Angeles TV market, long after the short-lived Vampira and just a few years after the passing of Sinister Seymour. After Elvira’s Movie Macabre she got to make this lively comedy feature, and thus planted her stake in the cinema firmament while at the top of her game. I’d give it an A+ for nostalgic sentiment, a B for quality and a B+ for wit, even if the adult humor does skew a bit infantile. Well, that was part of the Elvira personality too!

As someone who grew up reading The Dark Side magazine I was privileged to be made aware of a myriad of genre films that, had I just stuck to the shelves of my local video store, I would never have heard of. Of course this was during a turbulent period in UK cinema history that, much like the video nasties era before it, saw horror films treated with disdain. Which meant that unlike today – where you can walk into HMV and buy former video nasty Anthropophagus on Blu-ray or order films from around the world online – it was a struggle to find a lot of the movies I read about. It’s not that I didn’t try, and thankfully...

Anyone who had the pleasure of catching veteran horror director, cinematic musical hero and all-round (if we subtly forget to mention Escape From L.A) legend John Carpenter on his recent debut live concert tour will be more than familiar with his skilled craftsmanship in the field of synth earworms. With the Blu-ray release of Assault On Precinct 13 in November comes perhaps the best of said themes, as we delve into a Santa’s sack of cinematic treats.
Carpenter’s 1976 budget siege thriller, inspired by classic western Rio Bravo and George Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, follows the skeleton staff of a police station about to close for the last time as they and the few remaining prisoners fend off a marauding band of, erm, marauders. The soon-to-be-dead Irishman in question is Cleveland gangster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson), an affable mobster who comes unstuck when he crosses the local mafia. Based on a true story, Greene's hoodlum is far from a Sopranos stereotype - he's turned to crime as a brutal necessity but also possesses an innate sense of justice. A rich supporting cast includes Christopher Walken, Vincent D'Onofrio and Paul Sorvino.

Kill The Irishman
Stars: Ray Stevenson, Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, Vincent D’Onofrio, Linda Cardellini | Written by Jonathan Hensleigh, Jeremy Walters | Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh
Kill the Irishman is the true story of the rise and fall of Danny Greene, an Irish thug who worked with Cleveland’s mobsters during the 1970s. Ray Stevenson plays the lead, alongside Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken and Vincent D’Onofrio.
The similarities between this film and any number Martin Scorsese films are numerous. Kill the Irishman begins with a flash forward to an attack on Greene, a car bomb no less. Scorsese tried that one with Casino. Aside from that, it follows the tried and tested, from nothing to everything plot of the gangster genre. It just doesn’t so it as well as it could have or should have. Everything from the filmmaking to the acting just doesn’t pull through and ultimately...

When I heard about the film Kill the Irishman, I thought Jonathan Hensleigh had it out for me. I liked plenty of Hensleigh’s previous penned films, such as Criterion alumni Armageddon, along with Die Hard With a Vengeance, The Saint (even though this was rewritten to a very bare bones version), Jumanji (I was young once) and even his adaptation of The Punisher with Thomas Jane was a fun present day western, about one man’s loss and getting the revenge he believe he deserves. But after that film failed to make any money at the box office, Hensleigh fell back a bit and made Welcome to the Jungle, a very forgettable film, so much so that it was designated to Dimension Extreme’s home video line. But when I saw the cast list announced way back when, with Ray Stevenson playing the Irishman himself Danny Greene accompanied by Val Kilmer,...

The Movie: “Kill the Irishman” tells the true-life story of Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson), a legendary Cleveland gangster and folk hero. In the 1970s Greene and a rag tag group of modern day Celtic warriors waged war against the Italian mob in Northern Ohio. The most obvious comparison for “Irishman” is “Goodfellas”, another film that traces the rise of a figure in organized crime from childhood, through the early stages of his criminal career, into the glory days, and his ultimate downfall. Green was most notable for being the man the mob couldn’t kill. Seriously, the guy was like a freaking cat he had so many lives. At one point a house falls on him and he walks away unscathed. He survives bullets, stabbings, and car bombs. Bombs are the apparent weapon of choice in this particular region, and in one summer, no less than 36 go off. There is...

With a gang of familiar faces packed into its tough guy ensemble and bits of crime drama cliches strapped to its brutish frame, Jonathan Hensleigh’s Kill the Irishman looks and feels like standard rise-and-fall biopics we have seen before and rarely climbs above its B-movie trappings.
As Cleveland folk hero Danny Greene, Ray Stevenson struts the part of an unwavering leading man with wispy red hair, a strong head on his broad shoulders and, later, a ’70s porn mustache to match. His ascension from fed-up dockworker to corrupt union boss, then deeper into organized crime, is charted through a redundant string of sit-downs, blow-ups, and bare-fisted brawls — “do you want to dance?” — each as routine and blandly executed as Stevenson’s performance.
Here, fictionalized Greene has no qualms about threatening anyone who stands in his path, including blue collar workers, hitmen, Mafia dons, and an extraneous police detective, played...

Coming out of a tough Cleveland neighborhood to become an enforcer in the local mob, Greene quickly turned the tables on a loan shark he worked for (Walken) and allied himself with gangster John Nardi (Vincent D’Onofrio, Men in Black). He ultimately stopped taking orders from the Mafia to pursue his own power, surviving countless assassination attempts from the mob and killing off anyone who went after him in retaliation. Kill The Irishman is a film based on the true story of Danny Greene, a Cleveland man of humble origins and Irish ancestry. Greene never graduated high school, but had an abundance of both street smarts and intelligence, known for his impressive reputation for reading books. Greene was also a man who had both an intense, fundamental good nature matched only by his intimidating toughness and confidence. These traits would combine to mold the man into a legend on the streets of 1970.s Cleveland.

It's going to take a lot more than firecrackers to kill Danny Greene. You see, the firecrackers he's referring to are the car bomb rigs that just exploded in his car - as he was driving it. Luckily for this tall drink of water, the radio started shorting out moments before, alerting Mr. Greene to stop, drop, and roll out of his car before physics placed his body all over the street. Greene isn't a wanted man all over, in fact he has respect from most people in his area.

Chicago – The amalgamation of big time unions and organized crime in post-WW2 industrial America is as enlightening as any struggle for power. Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1950s thru the ‘70s was both on the waterfront and had the East Coast influence of New York City’s most notorious crime families. That history is wasted in “Kill the Irishman.”
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh ignores the result of the union/crime grip on Cleveland to focus on one ruffian who seemed unable to die, despite many attempts on his person. Kill the Irishman is the true life story about the rise of Danny Greene, a longshoreman who worked his way up to union organizer, only to be corrupted by its money and power. His comes off in the film as crass and uninteresting, which seems the opposite of what probably is true.

Photo: Anchor Bay Films Based on the true story of Irish mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson), Kill the Irishman is a series of violent montages with a little bit of story in-between. When car bombs aren't going off and witty racial slurs aren't being batted back-and-forth you're left with very little. The only reason this film ever comes to a close is because history dictates the outcome. Had Greene's story and his interaction with the Italian mafia already not been set in stone I'm not sure director by Jonathan Hensleigh (The Punisher) would have ever been able to end this thing.
Beginning in 1975, the film chronicles Greene's rise from a lowly Cleveland shipyard worker, to corrupt union leader to straight up mobster, killing anyone that gets in his way. In this sense, Hensleigh's decision to use archival footage actually hurts the film as it...

Car bombs dominate the cinematic landscape in Kill the Irishman. They do so literally, as there’s practically a new explosion every ten minutes, and psychologically, as the fear of the bomb, the pervasive threat of a sudden and spectacular death, powerfully informs the lives of the gangsters in filmmaker Jonathan Hensleigh’s true portrait of the mob wars that rocked 1970s Cleveland. The thick, persistent tension which comes with the understanding that it could all be over at any second cuts through the familiar mob movie tropes. Despite the presence of standards such as clandestine meetings in dark restaurants and thickly-accented spaghetti-inhaling goombas, Hensleigh’s film — which he co-wrote with Jeremy Walters (based on a book by Rick Porrello, an Ohio police chief) — hews closer in tone to a war picture than Goodfellas. Thus, with notable visceral force, the film conveys organized crime’s sheer futility, the pervasive notion that it’s comprised of grown men...

“Kill the Irishman” is the latest mob movie to revisit Cleveland’s sordid criminal past. For many, Ohio may not seem like the most likely location for a deep rooted Mafia flick, but for others Irishman Danny Greene’s life story provides a gripping backdrop for the movie, which opens in theaters on Friday, March 11. Embracing his Irish heritage, Greene reportedly dressed in green, drove green cars and signed his name in green ink. He survived several assassination attempts until his life was snuffed out in a car bomb in October 1977. The film tells the true story of Greene, played by Irish American actor Ray Stevenson, who spent a considerable part of his childhood in an orphanage. Greene then starting working in the docks from a young age. He later went on to become a union boss, and then went head to head with the Mafia in Cleveland in a...

Ray Stevenson is one of those actors you're likely to have seen in many movies and TV shows without even realizing it was him, which is one of the reasons why the 6'4" Irish giant has often been cast as warriors, thugs and police officers. In the last few years though, he's become better known for playing the third Frank Castle in the Marvel Comics-based Punisher: War Zone and playing Titus on the short-live HBO show "Rome." In Kill the Irishman , directed by Jonathan Hensleigh--the man behind that other "Punisher" movie--Stevenson plays Danny Greene, an Irish mob enforcer who gets on the bad side of his Italian bosses and becomes the target for numerous assassination attempts, which rocked the city of Cleveland during 1976. Ray Stevenson has a knack for battling mobsters. He took on Jigsaw.s army in Punisher: War Zone back in 2008 and now, he.s targeting the real deal, Cleveland.s criminal underworld. In Kill the Irishman Stevenson stars as Danny Greene, a mobster who one day decides enough is enough and that he wants to run the show himself. When he wasn.t setting off car bombs or putting guns to his enemies. heads, Greene fought for dockworkers. rights via the International Longshoremen.s Association, tended to his family and enjoyed jogging. He wasn.t all that bad. In fact, that.s one of the elements that drew Stevenson in to begin with; amidst all of the crimes Greene committed, he still maintained a code of conduct and managed to show a bit of heart, too. In honor of the film.s March 11th release, Stevenson sat down to tell...

Writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh is a lucky guy. It.s quite surprising that a filmmaker hadn.t snatched this story up sooner. Danny Greene had one heck of a life that came to an end on October 6th, 1977, but it isn.t until March 11th, 2011 that we.re finally getting the chance to see that story play out on the big screen in Kill the Irishman. We meet Greene (Ray Stevenson) when he.s just a boy battling it out on the streets alongside his pal, Joe Manditski (Val Kilmer). From there we fast forward to adult Danny working as a longshoreman on the docks of Cleveland. Unhappy with the working conditions, Danny takes it upon himself to challenge the union leader in order to make a difference. He winds up assuming that position himself, but rather than focusing solely on his noble intentions, he gets involved in the mafia and...

The true story of Danny Greene is not without intrigue or plot twists. The Irish dockworker first became a union head before seeking less savory work as a mob hitman. Like many before and after him, Greene earned the ire of those around him by trying to use his reputation as a negotiation tool, seeing the endless benefits of his experience mixed with an entrepreneurial know-how. Unlike others before him, organized crime didn’t know exactly what to do with the self-proclaimed “Celtic Warrior” and efforts to snuff him out were for naught.
