The Real Reason Jeffrey DeMunn's Dale Died In The Walking Dead Season 2
Image
It's tough being a wise old man character on "The Walking Dead." If you're not getting beheaded with a sword by the Governor, then you're probably getting your stomach ripped open by a stray walker. That's what happened to poor Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), the guy who served as the primary survivor group's voice of reason for nearly two full seasons before his untimely demise on "The Walking Dead." Did Dale's moral code occasionally bring him into goody-two-shoes territory? Eh, probably. But it's better to have too many scruples than none at all, and the group was worse off in his absence.

In the "Walking Dead" TV show's season 2 episode "Judge, Jury, Executioner," Dale is patrolling around the farm alone at night when he sees a partially-devoured cow. He goes to investigate only to be ambushed by a surprise walker. Dale is strong enough to restrain the walker from biting him,...

10 Best Obscure Horror Movies From The 2010s
Image
By and large, the 2010s proved to be a superb decade for the horror genre. Following in the footsteps of some of the finest horror movies of all time, the decade played host to a number of standout offerings from one of cinema's oldest genres. The best horror movies of the 2010s featured the likes of The Witch, Get Out, and A Quiet Place to name but a few, while introducing new directorial genre standouts like Jordan Peele and Robert Eggers to a global audience.

However, while the headlines may have been dominated by the likes of the aforementioned big hitters, the horror genre also played host to a number of lesser-known and more underappreciated outings. These films may not have been accompanied by the same mainstream fanfare as some of their more popular contemporaries, but the best obscure horror movies from the 2010s feature a wide range of compelling central premises and characters,...

22 Years Ago, the Best Police Procedural Series Began on HBO
Image
The Wire hit televisions across America on Sunday, June 2, 2002. This landmark series by HBO would launch the careers of Idris Elba, Dominic West, and a young Michael B. Jordan. Over the next six years and across four more seasons, The Wire went on to become one of the most memorable police procedurals in history. Introducing audiences to the occupants of Baltimore Pd, starting with Detective James Jimmy McNulty, before moving downtown and revealing his adversaries Russell Stringer Bell, and Avon Barksdale. This two-man crew controlled The Projects, and they were intent on building their own drug-trafficking empire one brick at a time.

From those foundations, co-creators David Simon and Ed Burns forged a television legacy that outlasted both The Wire's original run and TV's heaviest hitters of the time. Effortlessly unstructured, yet scripted to the smallest degree, The Wire Season 1 brought audiences to a world of harsh realities and painfully human cops and criminals,...

The Featherweight (2023)
The Featherweight Review | An Artistic Boxing Drama About Willie Pep
The Featherweight (2023)
The Featherweight follows retired boxer Willie Pep as he tries to mount a career comeback while wrestling with a plethora of family and financial issues in 1964 Hartford, Connecticut. Shot in a pseudo-documentary, cinema verit style on grainy 16Mm stock, the characters break the fourth wall and speak directly to the camera as the plot unfolds. Director Robert Kolodny deserves top marks for creative filmmaking in his debut feature. He expertly recreates Pep's matches while intercutting classic newsreel footage and staged reaction shots. This slice of life perspective and an engaging ensemble keeps your attention span as a predictable narrative wears thin.

James Madio, forever immortalized as "Don't Ask" in Steven Spielberg's Hook as a child actor, stars as the loquacious and headstrong Pep, who won 229 fights, held the featherweight championship twice, and is widely considered as one of the greatest boxers of all time. We're introduced to the 42-year-old...

The Wire Series Finale, Explained
Image
Quick Links What Is The Wire About? How Did The Wire Evolve Over the Seasons? What Happens in the Final Season of The Wire? What Happens in the Series Finale of The Wire?

Long before the recent Netflix series Kaos reimagined Greek mythology in a modern setting, former journalist David Simon created a television series with the same level of Greek tragedy as something written by Euripides in the form of HBO's The Wire. One of the most highly acclaimed series ever made, The Wire slowly expanded its focus across Baltimore, Maryland, one season after another. What began as Baltimore P.D.'s Major Crimes Unit investigating the Barksdale criminal enterprise grew to include hundreds of characters, from the lowest level street dealer to the corrupt politicians sitting in a place of prominent power.

The Wire chose a different aspect of Baltimore to focus on every season. Exploring seemingly unrelated social systems,...

Khris Davis in Big George Foreman (2023)
‘Big George Foreman’.  Movie Review: Boxing Biopic
Khris Davis in Big George Foreman (2023)
Big George Foreman is a film directed by George Tillman Jr. starring Khris Davis.

Some movies simply wait for a great story to do all the work.

Foreman’s life was quite a story.

We can’t say the same for the film.

Movie Review

Some said the voiceover was anti-cinematic, and it was Scorsese (among others) who denied it film after film. This Big George Foreman wants to have a lot of Scorsese without achieving his pace, effectiveness and, above all, grace, and narrative freshness.

Big George Foreman is a film that resorts, at all times, to the obvious, to direct compassion, to that piece of American History a thousand times told in a thousand better ways and with more elaborate plots and less flat characters and, in the end, with more to say.

It is well executed technically, it knows how to behave, but the script’s compassionate...

Big George Foreman Review: George Tillman Jr.’s Biopic Is a Big Loss for a Boxing Legend
George Foreman at an event for Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2003)
Across a career that spanned four decades and saw him earn two heavyweight titles and a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, George Foreman cemented his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time. But despite having one of the most remarkable stories in sporting history to work with, Big George Foreman manages to stumble sluggishly from one chapter in his life to the next in a way that’s neither insightful nor entertaining.

George Tillman Jr.’s film plays out largely as a by-the-numbers biopic, charting Foreman’s rise from a troubled Texas youth to a title-winning boxer, then a born-again preacher, then a title-winning boxer again. Khris Davis, previously seen testing out his pugilistic skills on poor Donald Glover in Atlanta, plays Big George from the end of his teenage years to his remarkable comeback as the world’s oldest-ever heavyweight champion at the age of 45.

‘Big George Foreman’ Review: Boxing Biopic Takes Middleweight Swing At Heavyweight Story
Image
So often thought of primarily as the big lug who was so dramatically dispatched by Muhammad Ali in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire in 1974, George Foreman is the main event in Big George Foreman. While there is plenty of boxing here to satisfy sports fans, the film is mild-mannered and genial to a fault as it charts the life of a dirt-poor Texas kid with a devastating punch whose public image transformed over the years from hulking bogeyman to that of a good-natured businessman and man of God.

Ali was such a commanding, entertaining and (mostly) adored worldwide figure, from his emergence as the self-anointed “greatest” to his ultimate status as one of the most beloved and admired men on the planet, that it isn’t easy to watch him take a back seat here to a younger but less charismatic figure onscreen. Eventually, if you like...

Big George Foreman Trailer: The Legendary Boxer Gets The Biopic Treatment
Image
Boxing movies tend to be pretty great fodder for a harrowing feel-good story. Even people who don't give a damn about boxing otherwise would be hard-pressed not to cheer by the end of "Rocky" or "Cinderella Man." Sure, there is the occasional dark boxing tale, such as "Raging Bull," that makes for equally -- if not more -- compelling cinema. Today though brings us what appears to be an underdog story, and a familiar one for many fans of the sport, as the trailer for "Big George Foreman" is here. Or, to be more specific regarding the title, "Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World." And yes, they did put all of that on the poster.

In any case, this is the tale of George Foreman and, more specifically, his wildly unlikely comeback story as a boxer advanced in his years.

Sony Pictures shifts schedule for 2023 slate including 65 and George Foreman biopic

As Warner Bros attempts to shake up their whole content creation with DC films, only some schedule shifts are happening with Sony Pictures, according to Deadline. One of their biggest moves is pushing the Adam Driver sci-fi actioner, 65, back to the same weekend as Shazam: Fury of the Gods. The plot synopsis for 65 reads, “After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills (Driver) quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth…65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance at rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), must make their way across an unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures in an epic fight to survive. The Wire Ending Explained: Way Down In The Hole
Image
"The Wire" co-creator David Simon often compares the show to a modern Greek tragedy, going so far as to reimagine mythic Gods moved into intractable American institutions. Capitalism, drug dealing, policing, politics, education, and the media are all examined in great detail, giving you a full picture of why the characters are helpless, and fundamentally incapable of changing anything beyond, maybe, their personal situations.

The series is set in Baltimore, which occasionally gave it some difficulties due to the bleak urban picture it painted, but as co-creator Ed Burns said, "we could've taken that show into any city." Burns and Simon just had decades of life and experience in Baltimore from which to draw.

"The Wire" began with a narrow focus that gradually expanded to dig into Baltimore's nooks and crannies. The show's first season mostly focuses on the plights of both the Barksdale criminal organization and the Baltimore P.

Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
The 13 Best Walking Dead Episodes
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
This article contains spoilers for every season of The Walking Dead.

When a black and white comic book series titled The Walking Dead premiered among Image Comics’ monthly offerings in 2003, few would have guessed that it would spawn the multimedia franchise we know it as today. As one among many works that capitalized in a cultural resurgence in the zombie subgenre in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, The Walking Dead might have been a flash in the pan were it not for its world-building and revolving ensemble cast, which allowed for it to go mainstream with AMC’s 2010 TV adaptation.

The main series will have clocked in at 177 episodes by its Nov. 20, 2022 conclusion, making it one of the most prominent TV sagas of the modern era. Even here in the eleventh hour of the eleventh season, there are bound to be many excellent episodes on the way before all is said and done.

A Little White Lie Cranked Up The Tension During Idris Elba's The Wire Audition
Image
When you think of HBO's classic mid-'00s series "The Wire," it's the characters that come to mind first -- people like McNulty (Dominic West), D'Angelo, Kima (Sonja Sohn), or Stringer Bell (Idris Elba). All of them have their place in the show's vast tapestry, but their stories never feel manufactured or inauthentic. Their major failures and small triumphs echo and clash against those of others, comprising the major drama of the show. And Stringer, the ambitious climber at the top of the show's Barksdale criminal empire, had some of the show's most engaging material. Of course, it helped that he was played by a future movie star.

While you can now see him on the big screen fighting monstrous lions in "Beast" or playing a romantic Djinn in a George Miller film, Idris Elba's work in "The Wire" some 20 years earlier was much more low-key. Stringer is nothing like the typical fantasy gangster.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Recap: Original Gangsters and Gatekeepers
Image
The price of being the boss is getting costlier and costlier for Raq on Power Book III: Raising Kanan.

But as the queenpin proved on Sunday night’s installment, titled “Stick and Move,” ice-cold Raq keeps a Louis Vuitton stacked with cash, and her eyes on the bottom line. This time around that meant handing a stuffed envelope to Deen’s bodyguard Smurf in exchange for intel on Unique’s next cocaine re-up. (Also, shoutout to The Wire vet Lawrence Gilliard Jr., for playing Deen. It’s always great to see cats from the iconic drama get that work.)

Soundtrack Mix #14: Dirty and Divine - An Ode to John Waters
Image
I’d recently been absorbed in the deep colors and heartache of Douglas Sirk's melodramas, following on from this I found myself pining for more white picket fence drama, but with a twist. This is where John Waters came back into my world, how I had missed him, so this edition of Notebooks Soundtrack Mix is a sonic ode to a pioneer of perversion. I started back with Polyester (1981) and Serial Mom (1994), which, alongside Gus Van Sant's 1995 To Die For is a double bill I’m always dreaming of. The work of John Waters ramps up the technicolor dreams of Sirk and places them in a camp world of dysfunctional misfits. His work is a reminder to not take things so seriously and that there is a place for everyone in this world which, importantly, includes the poor, repugnant and nasty! Waters is famous for his use of...

SAG Awards Nominations: ‘Ma Rainey’, ‘Minari’ Lead Film List; ‘The Crown’, ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Top TV And ‘Bridgerton’ Arrives – Full List
Image
Updated with full list: The nominations for the 27th SAG Award were announced Thursday in a virtual ceremony featuring Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs reading off nominees in 13 film and TV categories honoring the best acting of the past year.

Much like it did at the Golden Globes the day before, Netflix led the way with 30 total nominations. The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture ensemble race features three Netflix dramas: Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Trial of the Chicago 7 along with A24’s Minari and Amazon Studios’ One Night In Miami. Outside of Chicago 7 it is a fully new slate of films from the admittedly apples-to-oranges Best Motion Picture lists set by the Golden Globes on Wednesday.

Last year, Parasite won the film ensemble award, pushing it down the road to the eventual Best Picture Oscar.

James Franco, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., and Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Deuce (2017)
‘The Deuce’ Review: Season 3 Ends a Magnificent Story Only Television Could Tell
James Franco, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., and Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Deuce (2017)
World-building is a topic that tends to come up with science-fiction sagas or fantasy epics, but “The Deuce” is one of the most impressive examples in recent memory. Not only did the HBO drama immediately immerse audiences in a historical facsimile of 42nd Street, Manhattan, with XXX theaters and denizens of the night aplenty, but creators David Simon and George Pelecanos, alongside their producing partner Nina Noble and a top-notch crew lead by production designer Scott Dougan, replicated the so-called Deuce’s transformation over three separate time periods: first in 1971, then in the high-end porn days of 1977, and finally in the turbulent ’80s, specifically 1985, as the neighborhood is about to be transformed.

In terms of sheer artistic value, these touches can’t be praised highly enough. “The Deuce” isn’t breaking the budget, compared to other Home Box Office hits, but it’s a stunning, transportive experience each and every episode.

The Deuce Season 3 Review (Spoiler Free)
The Deuce season 3 is the perfect conclusion to David Simon's pornographic period masterpiece.

This The Deuce review contains no spoilers.

Midway through The Deuce season 3’s first episode, “The Camera Loves You,” former Times Square streetwalker turned arthouse porn director Eileen “Candy” Merrell (Maggie Gyllenhaal) attends the 1985 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

She and producing partner Harvey Wasserman (David Krumholtz) are there to hock their wares - stylish, slick, and largely feature-length pornography. As they sit behind their ill-attended booth, Candy and Harvey see two men wearing all black along with matching black pimp hats march in with a cadre of onlookers surrounding them.

“Who the fuck are they?” Candy asks, of the men gracelessly appropriating the world she used to live in.

“The Dark Brothers,” Harvey says. “They made a film Let Me Tell Ya ‘Bout White Chicks. It’s just a bunch...

HBO’s ‘The Deuce’ Final Season Trailer: Welcome to 1985, and Porn on VHS (Video)
HBO released the trailer for its eight-episode third and final season of David Simon’s porn drama, “The Deuce” on Thursday.

Welcome to 1985. Here’s what’s going down this decade:

Season 3 of “The Deuce” brings us into the world of 1985, just as VHS overtakes film as the primary medium for porn production and distribution. The lure of the California sunshine, the city’s aggressive takeover of commercial sex properties in Times Square and the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic mark the end of an era. With the party of the 1970s winding down, 42nd Street has deteriorated into a hive of uncontrolled violent crime and seedy video stores, making urban renewal seem more unlikely than ever before. Following the interconnected lives of Times Square’s barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police, mobsters, porn actors and producers, the eight-episode third season of “The Deuce” brings the series’ arc to a dramatic conclusion.

New Us Trailer for Radio Host Drama 'Hot Air' Starring Steve Coogan
"You elect a deranged con-man, just to see what happens...!" Freestyle Releasing has debuted another new official Us trailer for the indie satire Hot Air, which hasn't played at any film festivals or elsewhere yet. Hot Air is a timely drama (or satire?) relevant to today's world about a popular right-wing radio host named Lionel Macomb, as played by Steve Coogan. His life takes a sudden turn when his 16 year old niece Tess, played by Taylor Russell, comes crashing into his life. She confronts him and challenges him and makes him question his own position and his own legacy. The cast includes Neve Campbell, Pico Alexander, Skylar Astin, Judith Light, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Griffin Newman, and Judah Friedlander. We posted the first UK trailer for this last month, and they've cut a new Us trailer that's definitely trying to rile everyone up. And it's very obviously calling out some bullshit.

Steve Coogan is an Outspoken Radio Host in New Trailer for 'Hot Air'
"The American Dream is dead and buried!" Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Hot Air, which hasn't played at any film festivals or elsewhere yet. Hot Air is a timely drama relevant to today's world about a popular right-wing radio host named Lionel Macomb, as played by Steve Coogan. His life takes a sudden turn when his 16 year old niece Tess, played by Taylor Russell, comes crashing into his life. She contends with him and challenges him and makes him question his own position and his own legacy. The full cast includes Neve Campbell, Pico Alexander, Skylar Astin, Judith Light, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Griffin Newman, and Judah Friedlander. This actually looks like it might be pretty good, a fine attempt at dealing with these kind of media overlords and their insane egoes. But sadly I don't think this would ever truly happen in real life at all,...
