I mean, the casting of Upendra Limaye in the role of a sharpshooter and a gun aficionado was like parroting the character of Freddy Patil from Animal. We are done with the first half of the Shahid Kapoor starrer Deva, which delivers a fine blend of entertainment with an engaging plot and some badass action sequences. However, Shahid’s fiery aura turns out to be an absolute show-stealer in this one.

The plot revolves around Deva Ambre (Shahid Kapoor), a brash and aggressive police officer who is far from perfect. He sticks to his unconventional and violent ways to nab the baddies and is unabashed about it. When a personal loss turns his life upside down, Deva has to go to any lengths to uncover the truth and find a mole within the system.

In terms of performances, there’s never a dull moment with Shahid Kapoor on the screen. Be it in the action sequences or the emotionally high octane scenes, the actor shines in them all.

If the morning shows show the trend, then the highly publicised Shahid Kapoor starrer Deva is all set for a disastrous run. The film has opened to miserably low numbers in most centres across the country.

Deva marks the Hindi directorial debut of Rosshan Andrrews, a name to reckon with in Malayalam cinema. The cop thriller has not captured the audiences’ mind. After woefully low advance booking numbers, Deva opened to near-empty theatres this morning.

I spoke to a number of theatre managers and personnel. One of them spoke on condition of anonymity. “The opening numbers of Deva are not encouraging at all. In fact, they are lower than Varun Dhawan’s Baby John. We were hoping for a month-end bang. But it seems unlikely, considering the opening footfalls. The growth over the weekend will depend purely on word of mouth.”
