- Burly, hirsute RADA-trained British character actor with piercing eyes and intimidating presence. Invariably seen in villainous roles, with a notable penchant for horror. His sepulchral tones also made him much-in-demand for radio drama.
- Despite very often depicting European characters on film, he is a British actor.
- He has the distinction of being the lead villian, Wilhelm Kramar, in the very first Dick Barton - Special Agent radio serial. Though the original no longer exists, the original cast reunited in 1977 to re-record the very first story (in honour of the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II). That is avaliable on BBC audio.
- Had a brief but congenial role in Tom Browns School Days (1951) as Tom's father. Most of his roles were less than congenial.
