It's not just the title of Sandra Desmazières that is flowing (in the English translation), there's a constant sense of movement within the animation as the tale of two sisters separated by the Vietnam War plays out. Her story unfolds as an epistolary tale running back and forth in time as the sister who left, Thao (voiced by Sara Martins) and the one who stayed, Sao Maï (Linh-Dan Pham). The use of grease pencil shading adds to the sense of every moment being in flux as these two sisters reveal their very different experiences.
Thao recalls her treacherous trip that ends in snowy Montreal with a different name that she hates, while Sao Maï details all the ways in which her world changed as a result of the severance between them. In both cases the rippling nature of the animation makes it perfect for depicting those things on the edge of.

Justin Chon’s fierce heartbreaker, written and starring himself, centres on a Korean-American whose family is threatened by racist government policy
America’s equivalent of the UK’s Windrush scandal is the driving force behind this fierce heartbreaker from Korean-American star Justin Chon, who played Erik in the Twilight saga and got his directing breakthrough in 2017 with Gook, a drama set around the 1992 LA riots. Here, Chon writes, directs and stars as Antonio, who as a baby was given away for adoption by his immigrant Korean mother and brought up by negligent white parents. After a troubled past and spells in jail for stealing motorbikes, Antonio has turned his life around, working as a tattoo artist in New Orleans and married to a physical therapist, Kathy, played by Alicia Vikander – who, with no dubbing, sings a very nice karaoke version of Roy Orbison’s song about the beautiful Louisiana wetlands...

Justin Chon’s Southern-set immigration drama “Blue Bayou” has the raw feel of a ’70s movie — a freewheeling 16mm camera, intimately scaled, in-your-face human drama a la John Cassevetes — but it’s a film that could likely only be made now. That’s even in spite of the film’s exploration of longstanding, trenchant issues of immigration and deportation in the United States.
Korean-American filmmaker Chon writes and directs himself as Antonio LeBlanc, a tattoo artist and father living in the Louisiana bayou with his wife, Kathy (Alicia Vikander), and her small daughter, Jessie (Sydney Kowalske). Kathy has another baby on the way. Despite being an adoptee from Korea, Antonio is as American a citizen as anyone, as he’s now lived in the U.S. for 30 years. But after a misunderstanding with police turns brutal, he ends up in jail, and ultimately in the bureaucratic hands of Ice. Suddenly,...

After Antonio (Justin Chon) is wrongfully arrested in front of his wife Kathy (Alicia Vikander) and step-daughter Jessie (Sydney Kowalske), he’s surprised to learn he’s been flagged for deportation. Due to his adoptive parent’s oversight, Antonio, who was born in Korea but has lived in Louisiana since he was a toddler, doesn’t have citizenship. Justin Chon’s Blue Bayou is an amalgam of real stories like Antonio’s, among which there are thousands.
Blue Bayou is a successor to the elegiac modes of Moonlight (2016) and The Florida Project (2017) that aestheticized life on the margins in the American south. This style—naturalistic performances, handheld cameras, and soft focus—is intimate, touching, and completely familiar. But as Antoni’s life unravels through the second half, Chon slips from a delivery that is customarily moody to something almost overwrought, closer to melodrama. This is also when the film gets better.

Chon, who wrote and directed the film, also stars alongside Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander, Mark O’Brien (“Arrival”), Linh Dan Pham and Emory Cohen (“Brooklyn”).
The film tells the heartbreaking story of Antonio LeBlanc, a Korean adoptee raised in the United States who is forced to confront his distant past and what it means for his own future and his family’s when he unexpectedly faces deportation.
Chon got his early acting start in the “Twilight” Saga, and went on to create indie darlings like “Ms. Purple” and “Gook.”

Some of my favorite movies are “experience” movies. They aren’t just viewed or even just enjoyed, they are experienced. Not surprisingly, they’re primarily sci-fi/fantasy movies; the genre is well-suited to being experiential because it is allowed to be vast and epic without being ironic.

Strangely shelved after a very well received debut at Venice in 2009, at which it received the Golden Osella, Mr. Nobody is finally getting some semblance of an official release Stateside.
From writer-director Jaco Van Dormael, this winding, narratively fractured film strides a difficult line which divides the maudlin and the touching. While at times it descends into misguided grandiosity, despite there being more than enough heft to be found in the material, Mr. Nobody will at the very least leave you exhausted – if not ponderous – and at the most, actively examining the mistakes of your past and promise of your future.
It is difficult to comprehensively examine Mr. Nobody without ruining moments and plot threads, which are sometimes shocking, if not vital to the film’s overall effectiveness. In the end, it’s a film that’s memorable based on the emotion it evokes, not so much on individual scenes,...

If you’re a Jared Leto fan, then this is your lucky weekend. Leto has two movies arriving in theaters, and both of them feature two of his strongest performances to date. The one that will be the most talked about is Dallas Buyers Club. That awards contender is an all around good film, but the Jared Leto performances that will truly shake minds are in Mr. Nobody where Leto plays many versions of a man floating through several different versions of his life. The long-delayed film is finally coming to the United States this weekend. The only question is: is it one of the best films of 2009 or 2013? The $47 million production is a pricey personal project for director Jaco Van Dormael, but the gamble paid off with a beautifully ambitious drama. With Mr. Nobody finally hitting theaters, we’ve got an exclusive clip to share. Here’s a young Nemo Nobody meeting his future wives (played...

Mr Nobody is a film about choices – its problem is it doesn’t seem to make any. By building a story around the idea of someone observing, or actually experiencing, several possible simultaneous realities all based on which decisions he makes, the writer-director, Jaco Van Dormael, has allowed himself the chance to throw apparently every scene he can think of into a movie. While it’s never exactly boring, the hodgepodge of ideas comes across as a mix between Sliding Doors, The Tree of Life, the last section of 2001, Dr Who and Wonders of the Solar System.

Being a movie enthusiast can be depressing for women, especially when "majors" believe they only adore romantic films and, to a lesser extent, comedies. Despite a few plot holes, Le bal des actrices is worth your time. In fact, the film tries - by taking the form of a documentary - its best to address the difficulties that actresses face in the movie industry.
A female movie director (Maïwenn Le Besco) is making a documentary about what it means to be an actress in France with an Hdv camera. In the process, Maïwenn conducts interviews actresses that are either well-known, more or less known and unknown.
Mélanie Doutey, a blockbuster actress, receives a lot of script to read, clothes/jewels from fashion companies (ex: Chanel) to wear at big-shot events and deals from magazines that want to put her face (note from the editor: and what a lovely one!) on their cover.

'Indochine'

With ''Indochine, '' French filmmakers have produced the closest thing to a grand, overseas melodrama since Hollywood's olden days.
Exotic locales (shot on location in Vietnam), torrid interracial romance, native revolutionaries, corrupt colonialists, teeming masses, cynical police -- they're all here, along with a hefty star performance from an apparently ageless Catherine Deneuve.
For all of that, plus luxurious production values, the film is sometimes cold and distant, and U.S. audiences may find it difficult to lose themselves in the two-track story.
However, although it is definitely a select-site performer, it could well rope in a crossover audience and find itself profiting in a big way from long-term engagements.
Deneuve is Eliane, an Indochina-born French woman, contemptuous of local French colonial society, who spends as much time as possible working her rubber plantation.
Aside from her father, her main companion is her ward Camille Linh Dan Pham), the orphaned 16-year-old daughter of Annamese royalty whom Eliane has raised since childhood.
A rift appears when each woman independently meets and falls for a dashing French naval officer, Jean-Baptiste Le Guen (Vincent Perez), who's undergoing a kind of existential crisis of his own over his troubled posting.
When Eliane discovers that Camille is seeing Jean-Baptiste, she is furious, not out of jealousy, but because she fears for her ward's status should she not go through with her long-arranged marriage for the sake of a temporarily assigned officer.
Eliane has Jean-Baptiste posted to the far-off Tonkin islands and Camille, mistaking Eliane's motives, runs away to find him.
Camille's search is the beginning of a long journey through her native land that culminates with her arrival at a slave market near Jean-Baptiste's outpost.
Aroused by traders' brutality, Camille commits murder, Jean-Baptiste saves her, and soon the two are fugitives in the Indochinese wilderness, hiding out with communists and dodging French colonial police.
For most of this Deneuve is restricted to discomfiting polite society, working her peasant laborers and conferring with the Saigon police chief, Guy Asselin (Jean Yanne).
Asselin, Eliane's best friend, is a dutiful cynic and it is he who plots to bring Camille and Jean-Baptiste in -- but alive.
Although the two plot strands disconnect at times, the film finally resolves itself as the story of Eliane's loss of Camille and, hence, in part, of her country.
Deneuve's star power helps put this somewhat solipsistic twist over convincingly, however.
The power of the location lensing is sometimes overwhelming, from the forbidding Tonkin islands to the quiet royal dignity of Hue.
Newcomer Linh Dan Pham is attractive and essentially believable, if not completely eloquent, Perez adequately romantic and Yanne, seizing an actor's main chance, a delightful sinner.
