Exclusive: Slow Horses star Gary Oldman is stepping back on stage in April 2025 for the first time after an absence of nearly four decades to star in Samuel Beckett’s celebrated one-man play Krapp’s Last Tape for a limited season at the British theatre where the actor began his professional career in 1979.

Oldman, who won an Oscar for Darkest Hour, is in London shooting season 6 of the acclaimed Apple TV+ spy drama Slow Horses. He will play Beckett’s famous old-timer, struggling to listen to a tape he recorded 39 years ago, at York Theatre Royal in North Yorkshire from April 14 through May 17.

There are no plans to transfer the production to London’s West End or Broadway, Douglas Urbanski, the actor’s longtime business partner and manager, told me when I tracked him down in the early hours of Wednesday in London.

BAFTA Circles Calendar

The British Academy has confirmed the date of the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards, which will now be held on Sunday February. 16.

As per recent scheduling arrangements, the awards — arguably the biggest film awards outside the U.S. — takes place two weeks before the Oscars on March 2, 2025. Regular film festival attendees may note that the BAFTA awards will, once again, be held during the Berlinale, set to run February 13-23, with there likely to be a spike in industry professionals flying back to London on the morning of Feb. 16.

The full timeline and eligibility details for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards will be announced in due course. Voting will take place over three rounds: longlisting, nominations and winners, by the academy’s global voting film membership which comprises more than 7,800 industry creatives.

Filming is set to start on April 22. It is being produced by Chadha’s Bend It Films, Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler for Maven Screen Media and Amory Leader. Executive producers are Kamasa, Paul Mayeda Berges, Sophia Pedlow and Hannah Leader.

News has emerged about Gurinder Chadha’s next project, confirmed to be an adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Titled Christmas Karma, the film will star Kunal Nayyar as Scrooge. He’ll be joined by an ensemble cast that includes Eva Longoria, Boy George, Billy Porter, Hugh Bonneville, Leo Suter, Charithra Chandran, Pixie Lott, Danny Dyer, Bilal Hasna, Allan Corduner, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Rufus Jones, Eve, and Nitin Ganatra.

We can’t say we expected to see Danny Dyer, Boy George and Billy Porter in the same film, but there we are. We also reported earlier this year that the film’s Scrooge would be an “Indian Tory who hates refugees”.

Christmas Karma will also be a Bollywood-style musical; Gary Barlow is in charge of music alongside Shaznay Lewis and Nitin Sawhney.

Family is a chilling horror drama about an 11-year-old girl who calls out for help, but brings terror into her home. Ben Finkel's personal experience inspired the movie, crafting an emotional journey through illness and possession. The attention-grabbing opening scene in writer/director Benjamin Finkel’s Family effectively establishes the film’s peculiar, esoteric, yet bone-chilling tone. Evoking Relic or Ari Aster’s Hereditary, the cold open sees preteen protagonist Johanna (Cameron Dawson Gray) banging on the locked doors of a synagogue, pleading to be let in, only for her mother, Naomi (Ruth Wilson), to stalk across the lawn, drag her out into it, then stab her. Without any explanation or context, Family cuts to a less volatile time, unfurling a strange, unwieldy slice of arthouse horror that’s heightened by Finkel’s knack for viscerally disturbing horror and imagery.

Once a taboo broken only by the boldest of directors, violence against children has become increasingly common in horror films. Credit (or blame) for this phenomenon — at least in its more recent incarnations — goes to “Hereditary,” a movie that boldly broke the once-sacred familial contract. There’s bound to be diminishing returns when other filmmakers start taking inspiration from such transgressions, however. Six years later, that brings us to “Family,” premiering at the 2024 edition of SXSW.

The 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival’s Opening Night TV Premiere is the highly anticipated Netflix series 3 Body Problem created, executive produced and written by Emmy Award winners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and Emmy Award nominee Alexander Woo. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg for what’s in store.

Australian actress Cate Blanchett was awarded the winner of Best Actress trophy at the 28th edition of the Critics’ Choice Awards for her work in the psychological drama film ‘Tar’. Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.

“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.

In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

Cate Blanchett swallows Tár whole and spits out bullets in return. The role, of a fictional classical conductor somersaulting into her own downfall, was written by director Todd Field solely with her in mind. It’s a performance that functions as a total culmination, the crystallised form of all the women Blanchett’s played in the past – from Elizabeth I to Lilith in Nightmare Alley – who act like they have total control but may actually be hollow on the inside. Sometimes, all that’s needed is a single shot of those ice-blue eyes. A little tension in the muscles and they take on a self-satisfied feeling of mastery over their subject.

It’s not required that we sympathise with Blanchett’s Lydia Tàr. Her talent is plain – she’s a protégée of Leonard Bernstein and is one of the few winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony award – but she’s also cruel,...

The Offering

A portrait of a troubled family facing more than one kind of crisis, Oliver Park’s The Offering mixes Jewish mysticism, horror, and the social difficulties which arise when a young Jewish man leaves the Hasidic community to take a gentile wife. He (Nick Blood) longs to reconcile with his father, Saul (Allan Corduner), but the situation is further complicated by his urgent need for money, which has him considering the potential value of the family home and the mortuary business beneath it. It’s his pregnant wife Claire (Emily Wiseman) who actually gets close to his father, as each of them strives to adapt to make room for the other – but when the body of a man with a dark secret is brought in to the mortuary, a threat emerges which changes everything.

Beautifully crafted performances, stunning set design and great attention to detail all round make this one.

Dead children, hungry divinities, and humans asked to make impossible sacrifices are ideas that appear again and again in our best horror movies. So it’s only fitting that they’re finally being explored in a film about the original Abrahamic religion.

Just like the darkest parts of Christian mythology have been the stuff of Hollywood nightmares for as long as there have been movies, director Oliver Park’s reverse-exorcism thriller “The Offering” puts Judaism in the spotlight.

Arthur (Nick Blood) is a handsome young realtor raised in a strict Hasidic environment but who drifted away from the community after he married a gentile and his father refused to attend the wedding. But with his wife Claire (Emily Wiseman...

Despite 2019’s “The Vigil” making a modest splash amongst genre fans, the annals of Jewish horror movies remain pretty thin. Adding a page to those ranks is The Offering,” which actually has considerable overlap with that recent predecessor — it, too, is about a shape-shifting demon who preys on the living after the death of its latest host, whose corpse is on the premises awaiting burial.

English helmer Oliver Park’s debut feature is the slicker, somewhat showier affair of the two. But while diverting enough, it lacks that predecessor’s atmospheric dread and psychological plausibility, resulting in a jump-scare-riddled contraption ultimately more cheesy than frightening. Neon division Decal is opening the Bulgaria-shot U.S. production in 20+ U.S.markets on Jan. 13, simultaneous with its release on digital platforms.

At the start of 2021, we heard that filming was underway on A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio director Oliver Park’s horror thriller Abyzou, which was said to be “loosely based on a Jewish folk tale”. Five months ago, it was announced that Decal had picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the Millennium Media production and were planning to give the film a theatrical release later this year. Now we know exactly when Decal will be releasing the film – and it’s not going to be before the end of this year, but it’s not too far off. Abyzou, which is now going by the less unique title The Offering, will be reaching theatres in 20+ US Markets on January 13th. It will be available on VOD the same day. Today Focus Features opens Tár, the strikingly original return of Todd Field, in four locations in NY and LA. The film premiered at Venice winning star Cate Blanchett Best Actress as musician and conductor Lydia Tár. Early this week, it seemed to mesmerize a sold-out Alice Tully Hall at the New York Film Festival.

Art (Nick Blood) hasn’t been to see his father Saul (Allan Corduner) for several years. Though one suspects that the reasons why they have found themselves at odds run deeper, the ostensible cause of it is Claire (Emily Wiseman), the gentile woman whom Art has chosen to marry. She is now pregnant and keen to find a way of bringing the family back together. Art, however, has another motive for returning, stemming from a crisis which he has.

Focus Features’ fascinating new trailer for TÁR feels like an “For Your Consideration” reel promoting two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. Blanchett’s sure to be busy this upcoming awards season; she’s already earned the Best Actress award at the 2022 Venice Film Festival for her performance as composer/conductor Lydia Tár.

Three-time Oscar nominee Todd Field wrote and directed the drama which currently sits at 97 fresh on Rotten Tomatoes following its festival run. RogerEbert.com’s Tomris Laffly calls it “a film of rare elegance and sophistication,” and Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt describes Blanchett’s work as feeling “less like a performance than a full-body possession.”

The cast also includes Noémie Merlant, Nina Hoss, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner, and Mark Strong. Todd Field, Alexandra Milchan, and Scott Lambert served as producers.

TÁR opens in select theaters on October 7, 2022 followed by a nationwide release on October 28th.

The trailer is filled with suspense, as Blanchett’s character appears to be close to a total breakdown as she pushes her art to the edge.

Reviews out of the Venice Film Festival, where the film premiered, praised the intense film and its central performance.

Originally shot as Abyzou, The Offering begins with the camera slowly moving through rooms filled with candles and symbols. A rooster jumps into view, only to have its throat cut as part of a ritual. But this isn’t some voodoo ceremony or satanic offering, this is Hasidic mysticism. And, like so many other forms of magic, it doesn’t end well for the practitioner.

Art has come home, hoping to reconcile with his much more Orthodox father Saul. His wife Claire. has come along as well, although being told “Art may love you, but you’ll never be family” has made her less than enthusiastic about the trip. They hope the prospect of a grandchild will soften his attitude. We soon find out that the old man has indeed softened his opinions about Claire.

There are countless horror movies dealing with various kinds of demons and possession, but not very many that take the time to explore and showcase ancient Jewish lore and demonology. The first movie that comes to mind is 2019’s The Vigil, a terrifying and consummate film about a young man in Brooklyn’s Hasidic Borough who agrees to fulfill the duties of a shomer, which in Judaism is someone who watches over a deceased person until burial. Written by Hank Hoffman and Jonathan Yunger and directed by Oliver Park, The Offering is also set in Brooklyn’s Hasidic community and takes a deep dive into Kabbalah lore and demonology. The Offering is Park’s feature film directorial debut and premiered at this year’s Fantastic Fest. Even before anyone had seen Cate Blanchett’s starring turn in Todd Field’s Tár, there was awards buzz around her performance.

The role — which sees Blanchett playing the fictional Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composers/conductors and the first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra — was tipped, sight unseen, to be the one to win the actress her third Oscar.

The audience at the early evening gala jumped to their feet to cheer on Blanchett, giving the actress, and Field, a six-minute standing ovation following the screening.

There was a raucous response from the Venice audience with waves of cheers, shouts of “bravo!” and “brava” for Field and Blanchett.

The 79th Venice Film Festival officially kicked off the fall Oscar race on Thursday afternoon with Todd Field’s “Tár,” a drama starring Cate Blanchett as a famous composer embroiled in a public scandal. The film follows Tár from the peak of her creative and career powers into a harrowing unraveling as a cloud of #MeToo allegations gather around her. “Tár” is going to get people talking, but its star Cate Blanchett has made clear that she’s “not interested in agitprop.”

Cate Blanchett becomes a frenzied conductor in the teaser trailer for Todd Field’s Tár, the director’s first film in 16 years, which is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

Blanchett plays the fictional conductor Lydia Tár who, at the beginning of the trailer, stands against a black background and in slow motion exhales smoke from her mouth. That sets in motion a monologue about the meaning of time.

“You cannot start without me. I start the clock,” a voiceover says as Tár pores over a stack of classical music records and adopts a pensive, nail-biting pose.

Through a montage of live action, photos, drawings and other visual materials, the trailer and its narrative convey a woman veering out of control and, before possibly reaching a breaking point, finding exhilaration at the conductor’s concert podium.

Cate Blanchett is transforming on our screens once again - this time, into a world-renowned classical musician for Todd Field's upcoming drama "TÁR." After releasing an early peek in July, fans are getting more of a glimpse at the trippy film, which is set for an October premiere.
