Chegwin was a recovered alcoholic who rebuilt his career against the odds. He was sober for 20 years.

He was the younger brother of DJ and presenter Janice Long and twin brother of music PR man Jeffrey Chegwin.

He was talent-spotted by June Collins, mother of Phil Collins, on behalf of the Barbara Speake Stage School.

He had a son Ted (b. 1998) with his wife Maria Fielden. He had a daughter Rose (b. 1988) from his marriage to Maggie Philbin.

In a 2001 interview he admitted that he had smoked 60 cigarettes a day throughout his adult life.

In the early days of the Internet, he converted his bedroom to an Internet broadcasting studio, from which he performed live to the world for hours every day. He was interviewed about this by American author Michael Lewis for the documentary Next: The Future Just Happened (2001).
