When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them. Apart from the brief total phase, staring bare-eyed at a solar eclipse is a bad idea. That is a known fact. Less factual, however, is the notion that giving birth during an eclipse will have serious repercussions for the baby. Certain superstitious lore suggests imminent harm for anyone whose birthday falls on or near an eclipse. Ed Hunt’s 1981 film, Bloody Birthday, takes the concept further and shows how the celestial event creates unfeeling killers.
As taboo as it is to bump off children in cinema, having them be murderers is maybe more so. Which is why Bloody Birthday and its ilk are so well liked and sought after by horror fans. The genre has visited plenty of verboten topics over the years (some with more mileage than others), but killer kids somehow never lose their novelty or shock value. Now, other films featuring a similar pitch have a tendency to be serious and concerned,...

Inside Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre on a recent afternoon, Huey Lewis has some actual good news. Checking his texts, he learns that Martin Short will be attending the opening of The Heart of Rock and Roll, the rom-com musical based around songs from his catalog. Also on the list for the first-night celebration are Michael J. Fox and the members of Lewis’ band, the News.
But anyone expecting Lewis to jump onstage and join the cast in song will be disappointed. “Can’t do it,” he says resolutely.

Actors reacted with unbridled joy — and some healthy skepticism — to the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike after the union reached a tentative deal Wednesday with the AMPTP on the 118th day of work stoppage.
The strike officially ends at 12:01 that evening but goes to the union’s national board on Friday.
“Lost” and “The Good Doctor” actor-producer Daniel Dae Kim tweeted, “Woo hooo!!!! Let’s hope the deal is fair and we can get back to work!”
SAG-AFTRA Negotiating Committee member Frances Fisher, who told TheWrap that the only times she wasn’t on the picket lines was when she was meeting with the studios, tweeted a photo of herself holding out her arms in triumph in front of the SAG building on Wilshire Blvd.

Jodie Sweetin is not pleased that her latest movie “Craft Me a Romance” will debut on Great American Family (Gaf), the network her former co-star Candace Cameron Bure works for.
After admitting she was “surprised” by the news, Sweetin added, “I am disappointed, but in keeping with my mission of supporting the LGBTQ+ family, any potential or future money made from this sale will be donated to LGBTQ+ organizations.”
Sweetin acknowledged that it can be difficult for actors to know where their work will or will not premiere, especially since that decision isn’t theirs to make. She added, “Sometimes, we, as actors, don’t have control over which network buys the projects we are in, nor are we a part of the process in which they get sold.”

Back in 1990, the downfall of European pop duo Milli Vanilli seemed like an open-and-shut case of disgrace.
They — Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus — were the lip-synching scofflaws, convicted in the court of public opinion of fraud against a generation of FM Top 40 radio listeners robbed of our precious sense that music and its artistic authorship were directly linked. The punishment? Permanent professional ostracism and punchline status — though when Pilatus died of an accidental drug overdose in 1998, the reality became even more punitive.
Luke Korem’s new documentary Milli Vanilli attempts to give the “Blame It on the Rain” non-singers 106 minutes of re-evaluation. Were they perpetrators or victims? If they were some gradation of the latter, who were the actual villains? If they were some gradation of the former, did the punishment fit the crime? What did Rob and Fab actually do, what was their actual sin and why did audiences respond the way they did?...

Solaris Entertainment is developing a documentary about groundbreaking comedy writer Anne Beatts, her former business partner Eve Brandstein and Solaris managing partner Michael Bloom announced exclusively to TheWrap on Friday.
Beatts, who died in 2021, was the first woman to write for “Saturday Night Live” and helped pave the way for more women to enter the comedy field, Brandstein, who co-directed and produced the 2022 John Lennon documentary “The Lost Weekend: A Love Story,” said.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.
Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.
Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. Debating which Disney animated film reigns supreme as the greatest of all time is a fool's errand, but if I was given a vote, I'd throw some love toward "A Goofy Movie." While it's not about a singing princess making her dreams come true or "Hamlet" but with lions, "A Goofy Movie" is a silly, heartwarming road-trip movie about generational differences and coming-of-age in a single-parent household. As a youngster, I very much saw myself in Max Goof (Jason Marsden), a rebellious teen constantly embarrassed by his well-meaning father and hiding his adolescent insecurity by performing. I distinctly remember sharing the second-hand embarrassment during the pair's excursion to Lester's Possum Park, imagining how I too would cringe out of my skin if my parents were that excited about broken, animatronic nightmare possums.
As I grew older, my perspective shifted. Re-watching "A Goofy Movie" as an adult, I couldn't help myself from immediately siding with Goofy.

Screen Rant is pleased to present an exclusive clip from the newest home release of the 1988 cult hit, Earth Girls Are Easy, which depicts its origins from the perspective of star and co-writer Julie Brown. The sci-fi rom-com may not have seen all the success it deserved when it was first released, but its cast pedigree since speaks for itself. Directed by Julien Temple, who has helmed more than his fair share of music documentaries, the musical comedy starred Geena Davis (Thelma & Louise), Academy Award nominee Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park), and mainstream mainstay Jim Carrey (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

Tom Shadyac's 1994 hit film "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" starring Jim Carrey has, in 2022, been the subject of a deep re-litigation. Upon its release, audiences reacted with the utmost enthusiasm to Carrey's over-the-top-and-then-some shenanigans, laughing heartily at the actor's boundless energy and aggressive strangeness. Even the premise was odd: Ace Ventura was a private investigator who only took cases involving pets and animals. His plum gig comes when the Miami Dolphins hire him to find their kidnapped mascot, a dolphin named Snowflake.
What made the film worthy of reconsideration was a staggeringly transphobic twist that mocked and derided one of the film's main characters for comedic purposes. The climax of "Ace Ventura" saw a trans woman (Sean Young) stripped down to her underwear in front of dozens of cops as evidence of her guilt in the case. Her exposure was accompanied by having the surrounding crowd spitting and rubbing their...

Julie Chin, a news anchor from Kjrh in Tulsa, Oklahoma, suffered what doctors think was the beginnings of a stroke while reporting on live TV Saturday.
Chin knew something was going on when she had trouble speaking while delivering a news report and passed off to her coworker.
“I’m sorry. Something is going on with me this morning, and I apologize to everybody,” Chin said Saturday. “Let’s just go ahead and send it on over to meteorologist Annie Brown.”
Tulsa news anchor Julie Chin has the beginnings of a stroke live on the air. She knew something was wrong, so tossed it to the meteorologist, as her concerned colleagues called 911. She’s fine now, but wanted to share her experience to educate viewers on stroke warning signs. pic.twitter.com/aWNPPbn1qf

According to Chin, her coworkers “recognized the emergency situation unfolding and called 911,” she shared on Facebook Sunday.

Two of Jeffrey Epstein’s underage victims in Florida filed a shocking defamation lawsuit Thursday against Miami Herald reporter Julie K. Brown. Brown’s award-winning investigation into the disgraced financier’s prior sweetheart deal with prosecutors helped trigger Epstein’s 2019 sex trafficking indictment.
Plaintiffs Haley Robson and Courtney Wild claim in their new complaint filed in Miami-Dade County that the celebrated journalist made “false and defamatory” statements about them in her 2021 book Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story.

Update 8/15/2019: Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged madam, was spotted (and photographed) at an In-n-Out Burger in Universal City, Los Angeles. After being spotted, the 57-year-old reportedly told a diner at the popular burger joint, “Well, I guess this is the last time I’ll be eating here!” She was also apparently reading a book, titled The Book of Honor: The Secret Lives and Deaths of CIA Operatives.

The sordid saga of Jeffrey Epstein has turned into a teachable moment for activists involved in criminal justice reform.
The criminal case unfolding in New York against the hedge fund manager accused of sexually abusing teenage girls also stands as a prime example of journalism’s role in holding the powerful accountable and putting a spotlight on shortcomings of the legal system.
Epstein was arrested July 6 in New Jersey and is facing multiple charges of what prosecutors called “a years-long scheme to sexually abuse underage girls” at his homes in New York and Florida. He is being held in a Manhattan jail awaiting a judge’s ruling on his bail request.
In 2008, Epstein was convicted in Florida on two state charges of soliciting prostitution with a minor. But he had been facing more serious federal charges – involving molestation accusations from dozens of underage girls — until he was able to cut...

In movies, the ’60s and ’70s were the heyday of adorable kooks, mentally impaired cuddle bears like the hero of “Charly,” and saintly schizophrenic victims like Gena Rowlands in “A Woman Under the Influence.” Mental illness, in general, was viewed through a softer lens than the one we employ today, partly because of the whole who’s really sane in a crazy world? ideology of the time.

The latest Jim Carrey film entitled “Dark Crimes” casts him as a detective investigating the murder of a prominent businessman. The film was made in Poland and offers a dark subject matter and role for the once former stand-up comedian.
Carrey wanted to perform from a very young age and when he was just 10 years old wrote to “The Carol Burnett Show” offering his services as an impressionist. While his request was politely declined it would only be another decade before Carrey was all over television with his antic comedic act. He ultimately achieved the brass ring for comedians of this era when he got to appear on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.” In 1984 the 22-year-old Carrey was cast as the lead in a TV series called “The Duck Factory” which was supposed to be a star-making vehicle for the actor. Despite its prime placement on NBC’s Thursday...

Al Yankovic can be described in a lot of ways besides "Weird." Most people know that he's a chart-topping singer-songwriter, a director-producer, a top-notch parodist, an author and a die-hard polka enthusiast. Even those who have followed his career closely, however, may have forgotten he was, for a brief moment, the host of a short-lived children's television show.
The Weird Al Show debuted on CBS on September 13, 1997 as part of their Saturday morning lineup. Each episode began with the all important "today's lesson" before viewers were invited into Yankovic's underground...

Blame The Bad Seed (1956) for every murderous moppet that has skipped across the screen in subsequent years. Village of the Damned, The Omen, The Good Son, The Children, and many more have explored the taboo of killer kiddies. One of the oddest of the bunch is Ed Hunt’s Bloody Birthday (1981), a ridiculously fun turn with not just one, but three mini-Mansons on hand to clean up the schoolyard.
Well, that’s a bit of a misnomer, as our rascally trio tends to focus on grown ups, what with their stupid rules against homicide and premature burial. (Don’t worry – one of the protagonists is a classmate who is put in mortal danger. All’s fair.) Bloody Birthday was rolled out twice; first in limited release in April of ’81, and then in ’86 (also limited release). The film made its money back but didn’t earn any good grace from critics...

Commonly known as a lieu that breeds new filmmaking talents, Nicholas Bell and I look back at the filmmakers who made the most noteworthy splash at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Here are our Top 10 New Voices countdown:
#10. Jim Cummings – Thunder Road (Short)
Producer on Patrick Wang’s The Grief of Others and Trey Edward Shults’s Krisha, Jim Cummings showed everyone who is the “boss” with the devilishly funny, conceptually sophisticated and fastidiously well executed short film. In one stroke, Cummings demonstrates a formal rigour, an impressionable, sumptuous pulse and fall-out-of-your-seat choreography. Winner of the top prize with the Short Film Grand Jury Prize, Thunder Road is a crowd pleaser and one heck of a lucky charm calling card. (El)

This week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are an eclectic bunch, to say the least. Not only is Steve Miner’s criminally overlooked horror/comedy creature feature Lake Placid swimming its way onto Blu-ray, but Severin Films is also releasing a trio of controversial cult classics- Bloody Moon, The Baby and Bloody Birthday-all in high definition for the first time ever.
The Time Machine is also getting a Blu-ray release this week, along with Gareth Evans’ stunning action masterpiece The Raid 2 and a handful of indie horror films, including the wickedly entertaining horror musical Stage Fright starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. Overall, it’s a good week to be a genre fan with oddball tastes because there’s a whole lot of wonderfully weird stuff arriving this Tuesday.

A birthday (or random holiday), killer kids and a total eclipse…all of this sounds like the perfect combination for a horror film. Hgtv was planning on airing a new house-flipping show, Flip It Forward. However, following a revelation by Right Wing Watch that the proposed show’s hosts had a history of religious bigotry, stalking an abortion doctor and anti-gay activities like protesting pride celebrations. Hgtv has cancelled the show.
Let’s start with the good news. Despite rumors that Fox might give in to the powerful influence of producer Seth MacFarlane, Fox has decided to cancel the offensive, unfunny Dads. Unfortunately, there’s also bad news — the promising and endearing Enlisted (also the Chris Meloni sitcom Surviving Jack, which inspired strong feelings in few people). In worse news for comedy, the network also passed on two promising-sounding pilots, Dead Boss and Fatrick. Fatrick reunited Ray Ford with Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 creator Nahnatchka Kajhan. Dead Boss was a remake of a British comedy with Jane Krakowski and Amy Sedaris.
