We’ve all heard the warning, “If you play with fire, you’re gonna get burned.” Well, that’s nothing compared to the consequences if you steal gasoline straight from the source — an extremely high-risk practice now on the rise in Mexico, where the combustibility of extracting raw fuel from open fields is amplified by the dangers of dealing with the cartels who control this emerging black market.

The Similars (Los Parecidos)
Isaac Ezban
Isaac Ezban
Mexico, 2015
Mexico’s Isaac Ezban is two for two with his follow-up to last year’s gripping psychological thriller The Incident. Combining equal parts 50’s sci-fi b-movies and lost Twilight Zone episodes, The Similars is an entertaining, tongue-in-cheek black comedy with just the right amount of gore. Right from the start writer/director Ezban revels in the trappings of 60s aesthetics, opening with a Saul Bass-style credit sequence, a Bernard Herrmann-inspired score, a soundtrack that includes classic surf music and a voiceover that brings to mind The Outer Limits.
The Similars begins with a very simple set up as an omniscient narrator fills us in on how a bunch of strangers came together (by chance or fate) to the desolate bus station which serves as the only location in the lean 89 minute feature. The year is 1968 and a heavy rain...

Mexican filmmaker Isaac Ezban got back from this year's Cannes Film Festival, where his - very, very good - debut feature length film The Incident (El Incidente) premiered, and immediately began working on the pre-production for his next project, the science fiction effort The Similars (Los Parecidos). Movie theaters in Mexico lack genre cinema but Ezban is working his way up to solve that problem, and now Twitch is proud to reveal the first details for The Similars. First of all, we've got the casting announcement: The cast for The Similars (Los Parecidos) is formed by Gustavo Sánchez Parra (Matando Cabos, Amores Perros), Cassandra Ciangherotti (Tlatelolco, Verano de 68, Cantinflas, Even the Rain, Viaje Redondo), Fernando Becerril (Km 31: Kilometre 31, Depositaries), Humberto Busto (Amores Perros,...

Though famed predominantly for playing the integral role of Iceman in the X-Men franchise – a character he briefly revisits in their latest endeavour, Days of Future Past – talented actor Shawn Ashmore now appears in something a little smaller scaled, taking on the lead role in Tom Gustafson’s musical drama, Mariachi Gringo.
Ashmore plays Edward, a stifled musician, caught up in a dead-end job and still living with his parents. However when he meets mariachi singer Alberto (Fernando Becerril), he is inspired to follow his dreams and become a musician himself, and so packs up his bags on a whim, and sets off for Mexico. Upon his arrival, he meets Lilia (Martha Higareda), and before he knows it, his aspirations of becoming a fully fledged mariachi singer may soon become a reality.

Lionsgate have just sent over the first UK poster and trailer for their new movie starring Mel Gibson with the title ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation. he movie sees Mel Gibson in his first action movie for some years and I’m really hoping (like The Beaver) that he puts in an amazing performance. Could it be a new Lethal Weapon or has that time been and gone for Mel? I guess we’ll see.
How I Spent My Summer Vacation is directed by Adrian Grunberg and also stars Peter Stormare, Bob Gunton, Dean Norris, Scott Cohen, Patrick Bauchau. It’ll be with us May 11th.
It’s been a bad day for Driver (Gibson) and it’s not getting any better. He just made a big haul of millions that would give him a nice summer vacation on easy street. A good idea that went south – literally.

IFC grabs 'Drama/Mex' for First Take
IFC Entertainment has acquired all North American rights to Canana Films' Spanish-language drama Drama/Mex, which it will release as part of its IFC First Take banner, bowing it simultaneously in theaters and as a cable video-on-demand offering.
Written and directed by Gerardo Naranjo, "Drama/Mex" stars Fernando Becerril, Juan Pablo Castaneda, Diana Garcia, Miriana Moro and Emilio Valdes. Its producers are Gabriel Garcia, Santiago Paredes and Moro. Garcia, Renato Ornelas, Yibran Assuad, Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, Pablo Cruz and Kyzza Terrazas are the exec producers.
The film, which premiered last year in the Critics Week sidebar at the Festival de Cannes before playing the Toronto International Film Festival and the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles, is set in Acapulco and tells the interwoven stories of a suicidal old man, a 15-year-old runaway girl and a young couple.
" 'Drama/Mex' is a beautifully told story explored with fresh and provocative style," IFC Entertainment president Jonathan Sehring said.
