- He served in the US Army during WWII, where he fought in the landings at Anzio in Italy and was awarded the Silver Star. He was severely wounded by German fire while parachuting into Normandy during D-Day. After the war, he was a drummer for Cliff Keyes Big Band.
- He was the grandson of Chief White Bull, who fought in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876.
- His Lakota name translates as "Wounded in Winter Beautiful Bald Eagle".
