Creature Commandos saw Rick Flag Sr. lead a team comprised of The Bride, G.I. Robot, Doctor Phosphorus, Nina Mazursky, and Weasel.

Despite the fact even the most die-hard DC readers might not have been overly familiar with the show's leads, Task Force M quickly struck a chord with fans. Now, creator and writer James Gunn has revealed some familiar - and not-so-familiar - names who failed to make the cut.

"I definitely considered Wolfpack, and, especially, Man-Bat (one of my faves)," the filmmaker told a fan on Threads. "But I knew I wanted to tell Weasel's story so it felt like too many rabid and fuzzy characters."

"I considered Vincent Velcoro but wanted to choose a 'creature' far outside the usual roster from another part of DC - so I went with Dr. Phosphorous instead. I also considered Solomon Grundy, another favorite, but was pretty set on Frankenstein," Gunn concluded.

In Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein squared off with Clayface, and the former seemingly killed the shapeshifter after electrocuting him.

Clayface's remains were still splattered across the room when Amanda Waller showed up and he looked very dead. However, Creature Commandos was produced before James Gunn greenlit Mike Flanagan's Clayface movie - set for release on September 11, 2026 - and that now complicates things somewhat.

There have been multiple versions of the villain and Gunn has set the record straight by suggesting Clayface managed to survive that run-in with his fellow monster.

"The reports of Clayface’s death have been greatly exaggerated," he told a fan on social media. "He is quite mushy though."

Despite the debut season of Creature Commandos coming to an end, star Maria Bakalova revealed her anxieties about voice acting in the Max series. She portrayed the morally complex Princess Ilana Rostovic, the acting monarch of Pokolistan who Task Force M is sent to protect.

Creature Commandos debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a perfect 100% score which, at the time, was based on just 10 reviews. Well, the first season has concluded and we now have a final score for the first Dcu TV series: a "Certified Fresh" 95%.

In the Creature Commandos season finale, as Princess Ilana goes for a morning swim, The Bride tells Nina that she's the one who must go into the water and kill the woman destined to bring about the end of the world.

However, just as Nina is about to deliver the killing blow, Weasel runs into the water to warn the Princess. The distraction is enough for Ilana to spot Nina, disarm her, and repeatedly stab the most pure-hearted member of Task Force M to death.

Here’s the logline: “Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.”

The Season 1 finale dropped on Thursday (January 9). In the episode, Nina’s birth becomes complicated in unexpected ways, and the Commandos close in on Princess Ilana, once and for all.

With Rick Flag Sr. busy elsewhere and Nina sadly gone, the team now looks a little different and filmmaker James Gunn broke down that roster in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes.

"Nosferata, King Shark - who we met in The Suicide Squad so it's basically that King Shark - The Bride, of course," he started. "A new and improved G.I. Robot; he's not dead after all, he's a robot."

"Khalis...we've got a mummy happening. I'm pretty interested in how we do a mummy. I've never been a big mummy guy. I'm a werewolf guy, to be honest with you. And Weasel, of course, and Phosphorus," the DC Studios boss continued, confirming the identity of each new member.

The Creature Commandos finale is utterly heartbreaking - you can read our full recap here - but there is a post-credits scene and it brings some levity to an otherwise very intense 28 minutes of television.

Earlier in the episode, titled "A Very Funny Monster," Eric Frankenstein attempts to reunite with The Bride so he can share Rick Flag Sr.'s message about the Princess. Before he can utter more than a few words, she guns him down and spits on his remains.

However, in a post-credits scene, it's revealed that Eric managed to survive his wounds. In fact, he's shacked up with another gypsy woman - seemingly the one who spied on The Bride in the two-part series premiere - and is heavily bandaged.

Eric is still obsessed with the love of his life and argues that the way she attacked him is surely just another indication that The Bride feels the same way.

Creature Commandos' final episode wraps up the Dcu's premiere project with spectacular emotion, phenomenal twists, and the promise of much more to come. While the underdog team arrived with very little fanfare as a group of misguided monsters, the members of Task Force M finish out season 1 as heroes ready to move on to the next big mission. The show did a fantastic job laying the foundation for the Dcu while still keeping the focus acutely on this group of lesser-known characters.

The origin stories of certain comic-book characters have played out multiple times across movies and TV shows. One of the biggest offenders is Batman. With Doctor Phosphorus determined to become Gotham's new Kingpin of Crime, his hopes are dashed when Batman appears above him. We don't see the fight that follows but it's safe to assume that the Dark Knight was responsible for the former scientist ending up in A.R.G.U.S. custody.

This Batman is pretty bulky and he has both a utility belt and what many fans are convinced is his classic grey and blue costume from the comics. Whether this design is an indication of what Gunn has planned for the Dcu's Dark Knight remains to be seen.

Creature Commandos' penultimate episode puts the show in the strongest position possible ahead of the finale. As with each of the preceding episodes, episode 6 puts the spotlight on one of the new Dcu heroes as their backstory is explored alongside the contemporary events of the series. This week, the show focused on Doctor Phosphorus, and with the most heartbreaking and action-packed story yet, it delivers one of the best entries in the series with one episode left to go.

Frank Grillo played Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the actor has made the leap to DC to play Rick Flag Sr. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Grillo explained why he prefers playing in the Dcu over the MCU.

“They’re very different,” Grillo said. “Marvel’s a different machine, and it’s great in its own right, but the thing I love about James’ and Peter’s DC is that it’s much more contained. It’s so much more personal and I really enjoy it better. Following the usual template of introducing a new leading character in each episode, "The Iron Pot" follows Frankenstein's journey from his initial rejection by The Bride to his current adventures with Rick Flagg Sr. The episode is dark and includes some major reveals. While it's an all-around solid entry in the series, it's certainly not the best so far.

With the lineup for DC Universe Chapter One becoming increasingly detailed, I am fascinated to see more about the one confirmed upcoming DC release we currently seem to know the least about. Following Creature Commandos' debut - and more details being provided for the impending 2025 Superman movie - the path forward for the Dcu is steadily becoming more and more clear, as the DC Universe's Chapter One begins to take off.

Plenty of upcoming projects have had a decent amount about their story, cast, or generally what to expect going forward already unveiled. However, one installment has arguably the least of all of the confirmed releases revealed about it - firstly because it's still in its early stages, and seemingly in no small part because it follows up directly from other current and upcoming DC releases, meaning we can't get more details without spoiling the near future for us.

Fox has confirmed that the Season 1 finale of Creature Commandos will have a scene after the credits. This is great news for DC fans and makes people even more excited about the animated series’s end. There was just news of the show’s second season on the streaming service Max, which solidified its place in the growing DC Extended Universe.

In answer to a fan question on Threads, Gunn, who runs DC Studios with Peter Safran, shared this news. Some people think the scene after the credits might be related to future DC shows like “Superman” or “Peacemaker” Season 2. He confirmed there would be a scene after the credits, but he didn’t say much else.

Creature Commandos is wrapping up its first season on Max, and ahead of the Season 1 finale, creator James Gunn is teasing what viewers can expect.

The seven-episode series produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation will have a little extra for fans of the DC Universe.

When a fan asked Gunn on Threads if the animated series would have any post-credits scenes, the filmmaker replied, “The season finale will, yes.”

Gunn didn’t specify if the post-credit scenes had to do with the recently announced second season of Creature Commandos or if it would tease any other DC Studios property like Superman or Peacemaker Season 2.

Creature Commandos is the first show set in the DC Extended Universe that Gunn and Peter Safran spearhead as DC Studios co-heads. Actors will play the same characters across the universe in animated and live-action projects.

James Gunn revealed why Creature Commandos opted for a weekly episode release on Max, not a binge release like Netflix.

On the heels of the second season renewal of the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation title, Gunn replied to a fan who asked why the first season was not released in its entirety on the streamer.

“It affords a quality show an opportunity to be discussed and grow from week to week,” Gunn shared on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. “[Creature Commandos] has gotten more popular from episode to episode because of the positive discussion around it and has cultivated an enthusiastic audience.”

He continued, “If we had dropped all the episodes at once who knows what would have happened. I will likely always be in the one-a-week camp for our shows. For people who want to binge all at once they can wait until the end of the season.

Creature Commandos will see more action. Max has given the DC adult animated series an early renewal for a second season. The series premiered on December 5th, with new episodes set to be released through January 9th.

The “Creature Commandos” will fight again: The Max animated series, written and executive produced by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, has been renewed for a second season on the streaming platform.

The show — about incarcerated non-human monsters conscripted to join a covert black ops team — marks the first official entry in the new DC Universe as fashioned by Gunn and co-chief Peter Safran. The first trailer for Superman was released earlier this week - you can watch it here in case you've been living under a Kryptonite-shaped rock - and TV spots for the movie are already airing on U.S. television.

There isn't any new footage (and it's yet to be officially released) but the promo below was shown during Saturday Night Live on NBC. Warner Bros. and DC Studios clearly aren't sparing any expense and we'd be shocked if Superman doesn't get a Super Bowl TV spot next year.

In fact, early February would be a great time to drop a new look at the reboot seeing as it's heading our way in July. With rumours swirling about the first The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer debuting during the Big Game, the movies may go head-to-head sooner than expected.

James Gunn's Creature Commandos features several actors that the writer and director has previously collaborated with. Gunn is a prolific and talented Hollywood director with a unique sense of humor. This has led to Gunn producing several films that are distinctive delivered with his style and tone of voice. And, as a director who has a clear vision for his work, it makes sense that he enjoys working with familiar actors that he builds a relationship with.

This is very common for popular directors, recruiting a core team of actors they can rely on, and then expanding that circle to include new actors with each new project. Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, and many others have frequent collaborators, and starting with that relationship already formed undoubtedly makes the project flow better. Now, as Gunn begins building the reformed Dcu, it makes sense for the director to turn to trusted actors...

Creature Commandos episode 4, "Chasing Squirrels," adds a lot of tension and intensity to the series halfway through the first season. Of course, the episode continues to deliver James Gunn's trademark sense of humor, but it also does a lot to move the plot forward. Up to this point, the series was fun, but it also felt similar to projects like The Suicide Squad. Following the emotional ending of the last episode, Creature Commandos takes intense and deliberate steps forward.

Warning! While the focus of this new chapter is very much on the past and origins of Weasel (Sean Gunn), it also looks forward to a very dark future. As such, there are some very cool character debuts and nods to DC Comics as well as the brand-new DC Universe that's just begun.

As was seen in Creature Commandos episode 3, Task Force M successfully took down the Amazonian witch Circe (Anya Chalotra), only to be told that they'd just doomed the world by preventing her from killing Princess Ilana Rotovic (Maria Bakalova). Now, Creature Commandos largely takes place back at Belle Reve before Amanda Waller gives her monsters brand-new orders to go back to Pokolistan and do exactly what they'd just prevented Circe from doing.

The Dceu is dead, but not everyone is willing to let it go without a fight. James Gunn and DC Studios' plans continue to face harsh criticism on social media, with this week's Superman reveal hijacked by bizarre AI-generated images, for example.

One of the wildest claims we've seen relates to Maria Bakalova's Princess Ilana in Creature Commandos. There are those who, for some reason, argue that the character is underage, despite the fact she's played by a 28-year-old in the animated Dcu series.

Screen Rant asked the Bulgarian actor about the Princess' age in a recent interview to which she said, "I haven't really spoken about this directly, but I got the call from James [when he was] writing this character, thinking about me playing this character, which means that [she] probably is going to be around my age, late 20s, 27-28, a little bit before 30."

In this week's episode of Creature Commandos (you can read our full recap here), we learned that G.I. Robot served alongside Sgt. Rock and Easy Company during World War II.

Challengers director Luca Guadagnino is expected to helm a Sgt. Rock movie starring Daniel Craig, though Maury Sterling (Homeland) lends his voice to the character in this animated series. While DC Studios plans to have the same actors take on their respective roles across animation and live-action, that only applies to major parts and leaves the door open to Craig, for example, taking over in a feature.

In a new interview, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey explained why he wanted Easy Company to make an appearance in the show.

"One of the reasons we wanted to include them is because it's one of G.I. Robot's most favourite memories," he said. "When he's asked who his friends are, it's the boys from Easy Company.

Today's episode of Creature Commandos puts the spotlight on G.I. Robot and ends with Circe's defeat at the hands of Task Force M. As we explained in our recap, the Amazon warns the team that by stopping her from killing the Princess, they've doomed the world.

In a first look at next Thursday's "Chasing Squirrels," we see that Weasel is also set to receive the origin story treatment. However, in the latter half of this promo, Circe gives Amanda Waller a glimpse at the Dcu's future...and we see a lot of dead heroes.

Superman, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Starfire, and Robin are all shown, but the biggest news contained here is our first glimpse at the Dcu's Wonder Woman.

Returning in Creature Commandos episode 3, the series explores G.I. Robot and the path that led him to work with Task Force M. While the first two episodes laid a foundation for the series, episode 3 is an incredibly emotional and insightful approach to a character who is the least organic or living thing on the show. G.I. Robot is a machine and inherently not alive, but despite that fact, the episode makes you feel deeply for the tin man.

Like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker before it, Creature Commandos is an R-Rated comic book adaptation. There's bloody violence, swearing, and in the second episode, a sex scene featuring Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. and Maria Bakalova's Princess Ilana.

It's pretty tame in the grand scheme of things but a moment which could have major consequences in future episodes of the first Dcu TV series.

Talking at the New York Comic Con in October, Grillo said, "Maria [Bakalova] and I, we have a very steamy, X-rated kind of scene, which I watched with my 16-year-old son - fairly traumatic."

Gunn then chimed in to say, "Just for the record, X-rated is pushing it," to which Grillo responded, "It’s a hard R. Come on, it’s a hard R, you can say that. It’s 4,000 of our closest friends. Anyway, it was a lot of fun."

Discussing his latest project Creature Commandos, David Harbour opened up about joining the DC Universe. The Stranger Things star plays Eric Frankenstein in the series, which follows a group of nonhumans working for Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). In an interview with Collider, Harbour discussed the future of his role with DC:

I do think it’d be super fun. We talked about it casually. There’s nothing planned, but I talked to him a little bit about the realities of what that would look like in terms of CG or practical effects, and he had all kinds of different thoughts and ideas.

In the season premiere of Creature Commandos, we learn that Circe is leading a group called the "Sons of Themyscira." The Amazon sorceress is using them to attack a small Eastern European country called Pokolistan, but believes herself to be Themyscira's rightful leader.

A news report reveals that she intends to lead the Sons there to conquer her former home, though it's clear from the report that people aren't 100% sure whether the island exists. In other words, even with Circe on the loose, both Amazons and Themyscira are considered a myth.

Tellingly, there's zero mention of Wonder Woman during this report, leaving fans to wonder whether Diana Prince is active in the Dcu.

In a new interview, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey said, "I think people are aware of Wonder Woman. So yeah, I think there's some belief that it exists, but I don't know how worldwide known it is.

The first two episodes of Creature Commandos premiered on Max yesterday and the first Dcu project has just been "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with 93%.

Audiences have also weighed in on the review aggregator, awarding the DC Studios TV series a solid 81%. This week has seen a resurgence of the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement on social media, with Dceu fans back to campaigning for David Ayer's Suicide Squad to be released in its original form.

That has 26% from critics and 58% from moviegoers; Man of Steel, meanwhile, which launched the Dceu in 2013, sits at 57% and 75%.

Comparisons aside, Creature Commandos' "Critics Consensus" reads, "Bearing writer James Gunn's trademark penchant for kooky humor and lovable characters, Creature Commandos marks an auspicious debut for the Dcu."

DC Studios is having a good run on Rotten Tomatoes so far; documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, has 98% and The Penguin resides at 95%.
