Netflix's first big release of 2025, the spy action-comedy Back in Action, has been doing extremely well since its January 17 launch date, hitting over 46.8 million views within its first three days of release, which makes it the streamer's biggest opening weekened for an English-language film since 2022's The Adam Project.

Back in Action is headlined by Cameron Diaz’s comeback after 11 years away from acting, but Netflix’s most viewed weekend premiere in nearly three years is also Seth Gordon’s return to feature filmmaking.

Gordon — who’s most known as the director behind hit comedies such as Four Christmases (2008), Horrible Bosses (2011) and Identity Thief (2013) — hasn’t made a feature film since 2017’s Baywatch, and while his four films have averaged a box office gross of nearly $183 million each, his absence coincides with the comedy genre’s steady decline at the box office and widespread disappearance from major studio development slates. The Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz-led action movie brought in 46.8 million views on Netflix during its opening weekend, marking the most views in a premiere weekend for an English-language movie since 2022’s “The Adam Project.”

“Back in Action,” which reached No. 1 in 85 countries, was the most-watched English language movie for the week of Jan. 13, outpacing viewership for “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” which took the No. 2 spot with 8.9 million views, and “The Secret Life of Pets,” which was third on the list with 5.2 million views. “Knight and Day” took fourth place with 5.2 million views, holiday thriller “Carry-On” took fifth place with 3.6 million views and “Despicable Me 3” took sixth place with 3.4 million views.

Back in Action's many references may seem like unassuming jokes, but the quips referencing Michael B. Jordan and Creed have a semblance of meaning. By the time of Back in Action's climactic ending, the film tells a lot of jokes as an action comedy. A large portion of these jokes come at the expense of Back in Action's cast members, with Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz's slightly older parent characters facing the brunt of humorous insults from their children.

However, as is the case with many other modern comedies, there are several self-referential jokes too. As far as Back in Action's Rotten Tomatoes score is concerned, though, these jokes could not save the movie from mixed reviews. Nonetheless, there is a lot of humor to be found throughout the film's near-two-hour runtime, with some of the references - even the title - linking to Cameron Diaz's acting retirement.

The plot itself is nothing new, though the filmmakers wisely subvert expectations by casting name actors in roles that go against their typecasting.
