The new series will be a sequel rather than a reboot and will focus on a young Black woman who joins the law firm from the original “Ally McBeal” after she graduates from law school, according to Deadline. The lead character will reportedly be the daughter of McBeal’s one-time roommate, D.A. roommate Renée Raddick (Lisa Nicole Carson).

As for Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockhart, her involvement in the project is currently unclear. Per Deadline, “Flockhart has been approached to reprise her title role from the original in some capacity and to executive-produce the followup.” However, the outlet added that “a decision on her potential involvement likely won’t be made until a script has been written.”

This isn’t the first time talks of Flockhart returning to TV as McBeal have made headlines.

Ally McBeal is the latest series that could be returning in some form with its lead, Calista Flockhart potentially reprising her titular role. ABC might take viewers back to the world of Ally McBeal.

Almost 18 months after it was first reported that a revival of sorts could be in the works, Deadline revealed that a sequel series is in development.

According to the outlet, the project would be written and executive produced by Karin Gist, and would follow a young Black woman who joins the law firm from the original Fox drama.

"The young woman is believed to be the daughter of Ally McBeal’s (Flockhart) D.A. roommate Renée Raddick, who was played by Lisa Nicole Carson on the mothership series," Deadline teases.

Calista Flockhart, who headlined the original series, has reportedly been approached to appear and executive produce.

David E. Kelly, who created and executive produced the original series is said to have given his blessing for the new project.

Kelley previously opened up about the prospect of a revival or reboot.

After bouncing about in a couple of good Blu-ray editions, Carl Franklin’s superior film adaptation of the great Walter Mosley novel makes the jump to 4K. Denzel Washington’s star quality and acting prowess shine in the smart production, with Tak Fujimoto cinematography that put the color back into ’90s filmmaking. There’s plenty to enjoy in this hard/soft-boiled tale, starting with the great music. Everybody’s good and Don Cheadle’s loose-cannon henchman ‘Mouse’ is terrific. It’s one of Washington’s best pictures, and should have initiated an entire franchise of Walter Mosley / Easy Rawlins detective adventures.

Ideas about a possible revival of the legal comedy-drama series, which became a pop culture phenomenon, are being bounced around 20th TV, which would produce, sources tell Deadline. Original series creator David E. Kelley is expected to have some involvement in the project, but likely not as a writer. We hear Calista Flockhart, who starred in the title role, has been approached about reprising her role, but there have been no formal talks.

If they seriously plan on calling the series Ally McBeal, then they really need to think about locking Flockhart in before pressing on with the project.

Could you imagine Ally McBeal without Flockhart playing the snarky lawyer? It wouldn't land well.

Ally McBeal was a big series for Fox when it kicked off in 1997. It ultimately lasted until 2002, with the network swinging the axe after five brilliant seasons.

There was a considerable amount of closure, however, which is unusual when you consider the fact that the series was canceled.

Denzel Washington’s star quality and acting prowess shine from the smart & handsome production, with Tak Fujimoto cinematography that put the color back into ’90s filmmaking. Everybody’s good and Don Cheadle’s loose-cannon henchman ‘Mouse’ is exceptionally so. There’s plenty to enjoy in this hard/soft-boiled tale, starting with the great music. It’s one of Washington’s best pictures, and should have initiated an entire franchise of Walter Mosley / Easy Rawlins detective adventures.

Last year, Warner Bros. treated us with the awesome Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, which saw the likes of Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprise their roles of Batman, Robin and Catwoman, respectively. Being essentially the beginning to a fourth season we never received, it surpassed expectations by retaining the feel of the classic 1960’s television series, while also featuring grandiose action scenes that could’ve never been accomplished on the budget of the show.

Having said that, we’re thrilled to see that its sequel, Batman vs. Two-Face, looks like it may be even better. In addition to the return of the aforementioned actors, expect William Shatner to lend his pipes to the dichotomous Harvey Dent, a character who never actually appeared on the TV show itself during its original run.

Hit TV dramedy Ally McBeal will have a range of fresh faces when it returns for its new season next month. Regina Hall, Julianne Nicholson, James Marsden and Josh Hopkins will be making regular appearances while Robert Downey, Jr., Lucy Liu, Lisa Nicole Carson, Taye Diggs and James LeGros are out. Most of the changes were initiated by creator David E. Kelley, looking to rejuvenate Ally in its fifth season. Ally star Calista Flockhart says, "Sometimes characters can come up against a dead end, and writers don't know what to do with them any more. It's really sad to see people go. ALLY MCBEAL star Lisa Nicole Carson is being replaced in the high rating television show - much to the annoyance of Calista Flockhart. Carson ended up in a psychiatric ward earlier this year after an eight-day drug-and-alcohol binge. But now Any Given Sunday (1999) star Lela Rochon is set to replace the troubled cast-member by stepping into the role of Ally's best friend and room-mate, RENEE RADICK. Sources say Flockhart is begging Ally creator DAVID E. KELLEY to let Carson have her job back when she is well. In the meantime Rochon is thrilled to be on board.
