When the news broke that Christopher Nolan’s next movie would be an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, I was ecstatic. I did feel a bit sorry for the cast and creators of The Return, another movie released in the past six months that adapted The Odyssey, as that movie did not receive the attention it deserved and now will forever be overshadowed by Christopher Nolan’s project.

Attached to the project, so far, are Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. All of them are phenomenal actors. Unless Nolan is gender swapping the role of Odysseus, one, maybe two of them seem like they would be ripe for the role.

It's being reported that Tom Holland will play the lead of the movie. If that is Odysseus, it is the wrong choice. While Tom Holland is a great actor, he should not portray the Greek hero.

Last month, Universal revealed that Nolan’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer would be an adaptation of the epic poem composed by Homer around the 8th century Bce.

“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new Imax film technology,” the studio said at the time. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to Imax film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

It is unknown who Bernthal will be playing; Universal had no comment on his casting.

The ancient Greek poem is one of the foundational texts of Western literature.

As we know, Christopher Nolan is bringing Homer’s epic story, The Odyssey, to the big screen. The movie is going to start filming soon, and set construction has already begun in Aït Ben-Haddou, Morocco, a Unesco World Heritage site known for its stunning kasbahs.

In terms of budget, The Odyssey could be about to become one of the most expensive films in Christopher Nolan’s career to date. If rumours are accurate, the adaptation of the epic Greek poem has a budget of $250m – placing it in a similar arena as superhero sequel The Dark Knight Rises.
