Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dune are among the movies that received multiple Hpa (Hollywood Professional Association) Award nominations. The annual Hpa Awards recognizes postproduction talent in areas including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects.

The voting period runs from September to September, meaning that some of last year’s award season films will compete against this year’s contenders.

The awards will be handed out Nov. 17 at the Hollywood Legion Theater.

A whopping 276 films were eligible to be voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, but only 120 entries made the final cut across 23 categories. It was a “Dune” crafts celebration Sunday at the Oscars, with Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi powerhouse from Warner Bros. grabbing six out of eight wins for cinematography, production design, editing, original score, sound, and visual effects.

The statuette was one of eight being handed out in a non-televised series of announcements leading up to the main broadcast. While the decision to cut the categories from the main telecast has drawn a fierce backlash, the recipients’ 45-second speech did not include any mention of the controversy.

Theo Green, one of the five specialists cited by the Academy, thanked director Denis Villeneuve in edited remarks shown during the Oscar broadcast. “You, sir, were like the spice flowing through our brains, turning our humble ideas into your imaginary world.” He also thanked composer Hans Zimmer and editor Joe Walker, who also won Oscars for their work on Dune and “treated us as fellow artists. This is for you!”

Eight Academy Award categories were unceremoniously announced via Twitter ahead of the official ceremony tonight, with Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" picking up several technical awards. The sprawling, gorgeous Frank Herbert adaptation is currently, at the time of publication, a four-time Oscar winner, with wins for Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Production Design.

Warner Bros’ epic Dune won the Live Action Motion Picture prize Saturday at the 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, duplicating its victory earlier this awards season at the Mpse Golden Reels to become the frontrunner in the Sound category at next week’s Oscars.

Dune beat out a field that included No Time to Die, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story. All but Spider-Man are up for the Sound Oscar this year (Belfast got the nod instead from the Motion Picture Academy).

Other film winners tonight in Cas ceremony, live and in-person at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, were Summer of Soul, which won the Motion Picture – Documentary Award. Encanto took the Animation prize.

The most shocking snub of this year’s Oscar nominations was Denis Villeneuve’s omission from the best directing category for his science-fiction epic “Dune.” “It’s better to be in that position than the opposite,” Villeneuve tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I prefer people say you should have been there instead of ‘what the hell are you doing there?’ I’m not making movies to get awards recognition. If you do that, you’re not walking the right path. I make cinema because I love the art form of cinema. I love making movies. If you had told me a year ago that we would get 10 nominations, including best picture, I would have laughed and said, ” You are out of your mind.”

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards took place on March 13 just a few months ahead of the television awards ceremony, which will be held later this year. On Feb. 3, the nominees for each film category were announced, including the highly anticipated rising star award, which previously saw "Top Boy" star Michael Ward take the win back in 2020 and "Rocks" star Bukky Bakray win in 2021. Now in its 17th year, the rising star award is the only one voted for by the British public and was won by Lashana Lynch.

The night's big winners were "Dune," with a total of five wins, followed by "The Power of the Dog," "Coda," and "West Side Story," each winning two awards.

“Dune” was the big winner at the 2022 BAFTAs with five wins in the craft categories. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won the coveted best film BAFTA and best director.

However, Campion could not be present at the awards, and her lead Benedict Cumberbatch collected the award on her behalf. Another notable absentee was Will Smith, who won best actor for “King Richard.” Both Campion and Smith were in Los Angeles attending the Critics Choice Awards, where they also won.

The evening was otherwise star-studded, with a full house at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The awards were hosted by Rebel Wilson, who was at her irreverent best. Her targets included the Royal family and 10 Downing Street.

BAFTA award winners Tom Cross and Elliot Graham have decried the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to cut eight different Oscar categories, including film editing, from the live telecast.

Although “No Time to Die” is not nominated for best film editing at the Oscars, the duo said they were unhappy with the Academy’s decision to remove craft categories from its live awards broadcast during the BAFTA winners press conference after picking up their award.

The Cinema Audio Society (Cas) has announced the nominations for the 58th Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2022, as well as the Outstanding Product Nominations.

Among the films, TV shows and animated features nominated are “West Side Story,” “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “Mare of Easttown,” “Succession” and “Encanto.”

As previously announced, Paul Massey will receive the Cas Career Achievement Award, and Ridley Scott will receive the Cas Filmmaker Award.

The awards are designed to educate and inform audiences that effective sound is achieved by a creative, artistic and technical blending of diverse sound elements.

“This year’s nominees display incredible skill and craftsmanship,” says Cas President Karol Urban. “We received submissions reflecting a myriad of narrative styles and technical approaches. The ingenuity and storytelling expertise of our sound mixing community is truly spectacular.”

The ceremony will return to an in-person event on March 19 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.

In the ever-growing list of awards shows, American Cinematheque is throwing its clout behind a new one they call Tribute to the Crafts, an in-person celebration of the artisans behind the scenes who don’t get nearly the attention during the season that their above-the-line colleagues seem to. The ceremony, which will try to rectify this oversight, is set for Wednesday January 26, at the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.

The new show will “honor those who are at the very heart of filmmaking, and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera, over the past year.” The evening will celebrate individuals in fourteen categories covering all aspects of filmmaking and will showcase clips from each of their respective films. The audience for this invitation-only event will be composed of members from AMPAS, PGA, WGA, DGA, SAG-AFTRA, BAFTA and Critics Choice.

Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!

“‘Blade Runner’ was in our DNA,” reveals sound mixer Doug Hemphill about his work on “Blade Runner 2049.” Hemphill and his colleague Ron Bartlett previously collaborated with Ridley Scott on the 2007 final-cut version of the 1982 sci-fi classic, re-mixing the film with all the new bells and whistles available to them. The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.

Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!

As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.

The 89th Annual Academy Awards kicked off Sunday at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center, and as expected, the A-Listers came dressed to impress.

La La Land star Emma Stone wowed in a classy, custom-created Givenchy gown, while Hidden Figures star Taraji P. Henson opted for a blue velvet Alberta Ferretti dress, which featured a thigh-high slit. The men looked just as handsome, with Stone's co-star, Ryan Gosling, sporting a Gucci suit, and Fifty Shades Darker star Jamie Dornan in a cream-colored tuxedo jacket.

Greg P. Russell is no longer eligible for receiving an Oscar due to the Academy’s discovery of “telephone lobbying” that violated voting rules. The film and the rest of the sound team nominated — including Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth — is still eligible to win.

Michael Bay’s Benghazi story 13 Hours pulled down a surprise Oscar nomination for itself this year, with Greg P. Russell, Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth all being nominated for Best Sound Mixing on the John Krasinski-starring film.

Now, though, a controversy has cropped up around Russell’s nomination, with Deadline reporting that the Academy voted today to rescind the honor. Russell apparently called members of the Academy during the nomination process to make them aware of his work on the film, a violation of the Oscars’ strict rules against direct telephone campaigning. Despite the ruling, though, Summers, Habrous, and Ruth will all still be eligible for the award.

And while we know that the drama surrounding the Best Sound Mixing Oscar is probably of minimal interest to everybody outside a very select and well-mixed group of folk, it’s always interesting to get a look at...

Greg P Russell, who worked on Michael Bay’s war film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, has been removed from the list of sound mixing nominees for an alleged violation of Academy campaign regulations.

The Academy announced the development on Saturday – one day before the 89th annual Academy Awards – after it emerged Russell had called fellow members of the sound branch during the nominations phase to make them aware of his work on the film.

The action is in direct violation of campaign regulations that prohibit telephone lobbying.

An additional nominee from the film will not replace Russell. The remaining sound mixing nominees from the film are Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth.

The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards are in and La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations! I knew La La Land was going to explode at this event, and it's probably going to end up taking home many of the awards is was nominated for. The 14 nominations ties the record with 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve.

Arrival ended up with eight nominations as did Moonlight, while Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea all got six. Deadpool ended up with zero nominations. I was hoping to see it somewhere on the list, but it looks like all that hype didn't work.

Every film and actor who was nominated for their work deserves to be on this list, so congratulations to them all! There are so many great films and actors to root for, but there can be only one winner in each category.

The biggest sonic challenge with "The Martian" was was to make the sound of an environment that has never actually been heard seem completely natural to the viewer.
