In Season 1 of HBO’s Peabody Award-winning dramedy “Somebody Somewhere,” Sam Miller (Bridget Everett) worked through her grief and anger in the months following her older sister Holly’s death. In Season 2, she struggled to find her place in her hometown again while managing her first big blowup with her best friend Joel (Jeff Hiller) and grappling with a secret Holly had kept from her. Now, in the third season of this outstanding series, Sam finally settles into her tiny community and tries to navigate change without retreating into old habits of isolation and self-loathing. Just as magical as ever, the final season of “Somebody Somewhere” is a stunningly honest depiction of friendship, grace and courage.

Sadly, there is a significant number of the Glee cast who have passed away, either from causes later in life or from more tragic circumstances. Glee premiered in May 2009 and ushered in an era of Ryan Murphy TV shows that, collectively, may still not rival the cultural influence of his original hit series about a glee club at the fictional William McKinley High School. Though American Horror Story may now be more well-known, and American Crime Story more critically acclaimed, Glee, particularly the first season, was a phenomenon.
Glee utilized a fantastic ensemble cast of talented actors and singers who drove the tongue-in-cheek comedy of the teen show. However, they're better known for belting out Glee's incredible covers of songs. While the series' quality admittedly dipped quickly, the early seasons of the show are some of the best network TV has had to offer. Glee often brought in famed TV...

Captain Holt's no-nonsense leadership style was a perfect fit for the talented detectives at the 99th Precinct. Captains like McGinley and Pembroke had short stints, but Holt's bond with the team made him the best leader. Terry Jeffords stepping up as captain in the series finale was the perfect ending, showcasing his authority and respect.
Even with all the great characters on the show, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine captains managed to stand out. Over the years, the titular station in the Fox-turned-NBC sitcom went through several chief officers. Each had varying serving time, not to mention different rapports with the rest of the squad. At the end of the day, their respective stints make the team and the viewers more confident that Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) is the best one for the job.
The events of Brooklyn Nine-Nine were kicked off when the no-nonsense and stoic Captain Holt became the precinct's leader.

This week on TheWrap-Up podcast, TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman spoke with Bridget Everett, star of the HBO comedy series “Somebody Somewhere.”
The discussion begins in Manhattan, Kansas, not only the birthplace of Everett but the setting for the HBO series in which she plays Sam, a woman trying to find happiness in the wake of her sister’s death.
“My childhood was a lot different, a lot of the people I grew up with who I’m still friends with were all church, family, faith, football on weekends,” Everett said of how the show’s portrayal of Manhattan life compares to her upbringing. “It was largely sort of a straight, heteronormative vibe back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.”
That said, when she met with creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen about working on something together at HBO, they pitched a number of elements that resonated deeply with Everett.

The Season 2 finale of HBO’s sleeper hit comedy series “Somebody Somewhere” featured a wedding and a loving tribute to Ed, the beloved character played by late actor Mike Hagerty in Season 1.
The episode, titled “To Ed,” followed as most of the cast came together to celebrate Fred’s (Murray Hill) wedding at the old barn where Ed used to spend his time, now refurbished into a picturesque event space by Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) for the special occasion. In the midst of the festivities, Fred made a speech and called a toast to his dear friend — who was written out of the story earlier in the season following Hagerty’s death, by the announcement he’d gone on a long-term boat trip with his brother.
For series star Bridget Everett, the finale marked the touching end to a season-long celebration of the actor’s influence on the show.

When we hop on a Zoom with Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller to break down Somebody Somewhere‘s sophomore season, of course Episode 5 is high on the agenda, so much so that it catches Everett slightly off guard. “Geez, Nick. Really unpacking things today!” she exclaims.
How can we not talk about Sam and Joel’s biggest rift yet, which spawned feelings of hurt and betrayal between buds. In Sunday’s episode, the resident besties’ friendship experiences its first major bump in the road when Joel finds a new boo (Tim Bagley’s Brad, aka “Sls”) and lies to Sam about it.

HBO’s critically acclaimed dramedy Somebody Somewhere is about to kickstart its sophomore season, and when we ask its star Bridget Everett what viewers can expect, she throws us for a loop.
“Well, Sam is pregnant with triplets,” she tells TVLine with a straight face while sitting side-by-side with Jeff Hiller, her costar who plays Sam’s Bff Joel. But once Hiller starts to chuckle, it’s contagious and all three of us are going. While Sam is most certainly not going to become a mom any time soon, major changes are indeed in store for her parents, Ed and Mary Jo.

HBO has released a trailer for the sophomore outing of “Somebody Somewhere,” the critically acclaimed comedy series inspired by the life of star Bridget Everett. Billed by HBO as “a totally platonic love story,” the series will continue to explore love, loss, and acceptance as it focuses on the relationship between Sam (Everett) and Joel (Jeff Hiller), her new best friend who introduces her to a chosen family of self-perceived “outsiders.”
The trailer opens with the duo singing and dancing as they make martinis and reveals that Joel has temporarily moved in with Sam. This new dynamic is certain to provide more heartwarming moments and potential new conflicts as the show’s emcee of sorts, Fred (Murray Hill), is depicted explaining to Sam that, “Families aren’t easy. Not even the fun ones.”

As always, The Academy Awards ceremony this year honored the industry's best artists who passed away over the past year with the In Memoriam segment, but there were some major snubs. The In Memoriam segment pays tribute to filmmakers and actors with a touching two-to-three-minute clip with a stripped-back piano composition played over the top. This year, Lenny Kravitz took to the stage to play a tear-jerking version of "Calling All Angels" as names and images of celebrated filmmakers swiped across the screen. Way more effort was put into it than the previous In Memoriam, which had skipped passed creatives before audiences were able to read their names.
However, while there were predictably so many shocking Oscar 2023 moments, one of the most shocking parts of the three-hour-plus event was all the glaring omissions in this year's In Memoriam. There's obviously a limited amount of time and only so many artists that can be honored,...

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Hagerty announced his death yesterday in Los Angeles,” Everett shared on Instagram Friday. “A beloved character actor, his love of his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life. Mike, a devoted husband, is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, his sister Mary Ann Hagerty [and] her wife Kathleen O’Rourke, and their daughter Meg. He will be sorely missed.

In the new series “Somebody Somewhere,” Bridget Everett’s character isn’t pleased when her friend Joel (Jeff Hiller), a gay man having a crisis, shares his vision board. “Dream all you want, Joel, but this is the future,” she declares, gesturing at the beige room around her to indicate the world they’re doomed to inhabit. “We’re in our 40s. And it hasn’t happened yet, has it? It hasn’t happened for you, it hasn’t happened for me — and that’s because it’s not going to happen.”

Character actor Tim Blake Nelson may have found his niche in memorable turns recalling the heyday when Westerns ruled the roost in Hollywood. Or at least in Venice, where this film festival once again has shown a fondness for the star in a genre that rarely gets much of a closeup anymore. A couple of years ago, Nelson was unforgettable singing “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” in one of the vignettes of the Coen brothers’ anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which had its world premiere in Venice before going on to get an Oscar nomination for that very song. Now Nelson is back in his inimitable scruffy style as a live-off-the-land-looking guy bringing up a straight-arrow teenage son in the waning days of the old west as Old Henry, which debuted in an out of competition slot at Venice earlier today.

Lucky Louie, Season 1, Episode 12: “Kim Moves Out”
Written by Louie C.K.
Directed by Andrew D. Weyman
Aired on August 27th, 2006 on HBO
“Kim Moves Out” is the final episode of Lucky Louie aired by HBO during the show’s initial run (there’s an unaired episode released with the DVD set which I’ll review next week), and it was a fitting way for the sitcom to go out. Lucky Louie had a remarkably inconsistent first and only season, and “Kim Moves Out” comes across as the perfect ending due to the light it sheds on both what made the show so good and what made it so bad. As harsh as I’ve been on Lucky Louie, it’s hard not to see any potential in its concept, and this episode features some perfect examples of the style realized at its finest. No favorable review I've ever written has inspired more disbelief than my three stars for "Speed 2." Even its star, Sandra Bullock, started mentioning in interviews her disgust with herself for agreeing to star in it. It's frequently cited as an example of what a lousy critic I am. (Note well: Siskel also gave it thumbs up.) All the same, I'm grateful to movies that show me what I haven't seen before, and "Speed 2" had a cruise ship plowing right up the main street of a Caribbean village. In the spring of 1999, at the University of Colorado's Conference on World Affairs, I argued that movies like this weren't as easy to make as it might appear. In a moment of madness I announced in self defense a contest for a new "Speed 3." The rules were: It should be on VHS, no longer than five minutes long, and must involve something that cannot stop moving.

I wanna start off here by saying I am greatly appreciative to be given the privilege of bringing the sappiness to The Liberal Dead‘s Kurt Russell Appreciation Week. I jumped on this boat pretty late in the game, and Shawn Savage forewarned me as soon as he handed out the invitation that most of Russell’s iconic roles had already been taken.
Starring: Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Edward Hermann
Writer: Leslie Dixon
Director: Garry Marshall

Story:
A super hot/super bitchy heiress dumps workin’ man Dean Proffitt off her boat after he does a job that doesn’t meet her satisfaction. Later that night, she falls off the boat herself and suffers from amnesia. Her husband basically says “Fuck it! Party time!” and leaves her at the hospital. So, Dean develops a plan of revenge by convincing her that she’s his wife.
