In the beginning, R.E.M. would play anywhere that would have them, from pizza parlors to gay bars to frat parties. For all the arty elusiveness of their early music, the band that would end up setting the template for the Nineties alt-rock boom was hungrier and more strategic than it might have seemed — which is just one of many revelations in Peter Ames Carlin’s illuminating new book, The Name of This Band Is R.E.M.: A Biography.

A white, rich, drunk man in his late 40s (or early 50s) heads to bed in the bathrobe he’s been wearing all day and says, almost to himself, “So concludes another day in paradise.” Seconds later, sure enough, he’s singing Phil Collins’ song of the same name and flipping through his CD collection so he can listen to the track. Considering the frenzied context surrounding the scene, one might be forgiven for assuming it’s a relatively minor moment. After all, we already know the warbling Gen X’er will be dead the next morning. (His nighttime jam session is told in flashback.) The evidence indicates he was murdered, and the only party present for his mumbled a cappella number is also the last guy to see him alive (Sterling K. Brown). Oh, and it just so happens the singer is the President of the United States, and...

This year’s Academy Award nominations were just announced, shining a spotlight on some of the best movies of the year, plus some pretty bad movies, and also a bunch of stuff that nobody has ever heard of and may or may not actually be real for all we know.
One snub that some fans are clearly disappointed about is the lack of a nomination for Will & Harper in the Best Documentary category. The acclaimed doc followed Will Ferrell and his friend Harper Steele on a cross-country road trip, shortly after her decision to transition in 2021.
Will & Harper also, arguably, deserved a nomination for Best Original Song. In the movie, Ferrell and Steele task Kristen Wiig with penning an anthem for their road trip. The resulting “Harper and Will Go West” is surprisingly good; it’s catchy, and has clever lyrics, such as how it compares the duo to “Thelma and Louise,...

Phil Collins’ various health issues have prevented him from playing the drums for the past several years, but the iconic musician briefly tested out his classic Gretsch concert tom kit for the first time in more than a decade in a new video for Drumeo.
The 73-year-old Genesis legend endured a major spinal injury in 2007, and also suffers from drop foot (difficulty lifting the front part of his foot) and chronic neck pain from years of drumming. He currently uses a cane to walk.

The 73-year-old music icon confirmed in Phil Collins: Drummer First, a documentary released on December 18, that he can no longer play the drums.

Phil explained that after playing drums in concert with Genesis for five decades and on solo tours since the ‘80s, his hands and legs have been affected to the point that he had to retire from drumming in March 2022 after his last performance with his band.
“If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything,” he said.
“If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it.

Phil Collins, the iconic drummer and vocalist of Genesis, has opened up about his deteriorating health in a new documentary. The 73-year-old musician’s candid revelations paint a picture of a man grappling with the physical limitations brought on by a lifetime of relentless drumming.
A Reluctant Retirement
The documentary features a heartbreaking admission from Collins: “I’ve used up my air miles.” This statement reflects his acceptance of the reality that his drumming career is likely over. Years of performing have taken a toll on his body, particularly his hands, feet, and back. With the box office smash Moana 2 crushing box office records, Disney has added another monster musical to their filmography. Few companies are more associated with the genre than Disney. Not only do they win big prizes in film, but Disney Musicals have taken over Broadway for years at a time. Moana 2 will still pocket several hundred million dollars before it’s done. That, as well as the impending release of Mufasa, make this the perfect time to look back over the best Disney Musicals in history.
Of note, this is a contentious discussion, to say the least. There are dozens of movies and musicals to choose from, all with valid rationales behind their inclusion. This required some hardline rules, which eliminated a few movies in the process. To qualify, we required four songs, sung for the purposes of plot by a character in the movie, to be eligible for inclusion.

Fresh off of its record-breaking four Golden Globes nominations – the most ever for an animated film – “The Wild Robot” has officially taken the lead in the Best Song race at the Oscars. An impressive 100% of our editors and 96% of experts think the standout track “Kiss The Sky” will be nominated come the official announcement on Jan. 17, according to our current combined odds.
At the beginning of the month, “Emilia Pérez” led the category with “El Mal,” but the acclaimed track from the animated movie has been gaining momentum just as awards season kicks into full gear. “Kiss The Sky” is performed by Maren Morris and written by the team of Delacey, Jordan K. Johnson, Stefan Johnson, Morris, Michael Pollack, and Ali Tamposi.
The song is not only a beautiful anthem of self-empowerment and facing fears, but it also serves as one of the emotional high points in a pivotal scene in the film.

Michael Mann's big-screen iteration of his hit 1980s television series "Miami Vice" was up against it from the moment it was greenlit. The problem was right there in the title, and what it represented. When people who were old enough to have watched "Miami Vice" during its run from 1984 to 1990 recalled the show, they remembered a series that was Reagan-era style over substance. It was cool during a profoundly uncool era, a byproduct of empty MTV gloss bolstered by ultra-unhip music from Glenn Frey and Phil Collins. Star Don Johnson -- unshaven in a white sportcoat, rocking white Cole Haan kicks without socks -- was the epitome of the series.
The shimmering South Florida surfaces was one reason to watch, but anyone who paid actual attention to the plotlines knew going into Mann's film that the show was always about a rough, thankless, inherently deceitful job and the...

Some lessons need to be learned over and over again. When Bob Dylan and the Beatles broke through in the Sixties, they paved the way for generations of artists to write their own songs. But by the early 2000s, the charts had been largely reclaimed by pro songwriters and svengali producers — until a young, putatively country artist named Taylor Swift came along.
As Swift rapidly moved toward pop stardom, guitar always in hand, she started an industry-wide movement toward artists — especially young women — writing about their own lives again. “When...

Decades never start quite on time, pop-culturally speaking, and it’s tempting to say that the Sixties didn’t really kick off until the Beatles played The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, just as “Smells Like Teen Spirt” started the Nineties in 1991. But as David Browne’s new book, Talkin’ Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America’s Bohemian Music Capital, suggests, the Sixties’ spirit really began in Greenwich Village, not Liverpool — and the music that really got it going was written by Bob Dylan. In June of 1963, Peter,...

The American Psycho soundtrack boasts some classic rock and pop hits from the 1980s. Songs by New Order and Genesis have even become synonymous with the movie, given the crucial scenes in which they play. Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis and directed by Mary Harron, American Psycho revolves around a New York City banker who doubles as a serial killer at night. Rather than delving into familiar psychological thriller tropes, the highly quotable American Psycho takes a darkly comic approach as it decodes the consumerism and toxic masculinity that drives its twisted lead character, Patrick Bateman.
Music plays a chief role in American Psycho, given that Patrick has quite an interesting playlist. Despite the dark, homicidal things brewing in his mind, he listens to cheery songs while walking to the office. Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba continues to receive the wrath of upset fans due to her critiques.
In particular, fans let her hear it after she delivered what some felt was a harsh review during Week 5’s Disney Night.
The Bachelor star, Joey Graziadei, and his dance partner, Jenna Johnson, performed the samba in costumes inspired by Tarzan.
They wowed the audience with their moves, set to a rendition of Trashin’ the Camp, originally performed by former The View host Rosie O’Donnell and singer Phil Collins.
During the routine, two DWTS judges visibly enjoyed the performance. Bruno Tonioli stood up to watch part of the routine, and Derek Hough noticeably bopped around to the performance in his seat.
While both delivered helpful critiques and praise that the audience seemed Ok with, Carrie Ann’s comments didn’t sit well with some.

Of all the storied entertainers one award away from achieving Egot status — that is, a performer or creative who has won a competitive Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony — two near-winners are not like the others: South Park overlords Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
So how have the pair — famed for gags like “The Crack Baby Athletic Association,” the “HUMANCENTiPAD,” and of course, sending Lemmiwinks the gerbil on a trip up Mr. Slave’s ass — managed to go get closer to an Egot than Meryl Streep or Denzel Washington? Well, by making excellent television for more than two decades and taking a brief detour onto Broadway.
Winning their first Primetime Emmy Award for South Park in 2005, an achievement the duo have repeated four more times since, Stone and Parker became serious Egot contenders in 2011, when their musical, The Book of Mormon, made its Broadway debut.

The 2024 Netflix music documentary The Greatest Night in Pop features behind-the-scenes footage and details of the historic "We Are The World" song's creation. Released back in 1985, "We Are The World" brought together the biggest names in the music industry from all types of genres, including pop, country, folk, rock, and more. The song was assembled by producers Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian and was originated by musician and activist Harry Belafonte and manager Ken Kragen.
The Greatest Night in Pop features new present-day interviews from Lionel Richie, who was a songwriter on "We Are The World" along with pop star Michael Jackson. Richie and Jackson had become acquaintances while their immensely successful music careers were just taking off as the lead singers of The Commodores and The Jackson Five, respectively. "We Are The World" remains to be one of the best-selling songs of all time, selling over 20 million physical copies during the mid-1980s.

Ah, the world of Netflix’s Emily in Paris! It’s a delightful feast for the eyes, with not two but three main characters. Yes, we have our lead, Emily Cooper, and the enchanting city of Paris, but let’s be honest—Emily’s wardrobe is the real showstopper here. If clothes could talk, we bet they’d have their own spin-off series by now! Now let’s talk about the woman behind the fabulous outfits: Lily Collins, who embodies the audacious Emily.

“This world is bullshit,” Chappell Roan recently said, during an extended TikTok rant. “You shouldn’t model your life on what we think is cool and what we’re wearing and what we’re saying and everything. Go with yourself.” All right, fine, that was actually what Fiona Apple said on the VMAs in 1997 — and at the time, Apple’s dissatisfaction with fame briefly threatened to become the essence of her brand, overshadowing the brilliance of her music. But Apple continued creating, and her songs have long since outlasted any passing controversies.

Phil Collins’ health has become a subject of concern for fans in recent years.
That’s because of a 2007 spinal injury that left him with limited mobility.
Based on his recent appearances, Collins is still able to walk with the assistance of a cane. But sources close to the rock legend say that he’s no longer able to play the drums.

Phil Collins Dodges Questions About His Health
Collins himself has been quiet on the topic of his condition.
When concerns are raised, he tends to dismiss them with a joke. In 2022, for example, Collins appeared alongside his Genesis bandmates for a concert that was billed as the band’s “last show ever.”

Plot: Two top-level fixers (Brad Pitt and George Clooney) with underworld connections must overcome their rivalry when a job goes awry.
Review: Wolfs is getting a curiously unceremonious release, considering the talent involved. There was a time when Brad Pitt and George Clooney doing a buddy action movie together would have been an event. And the movie’s good to boot! Yet, Wolfs, which comes from director Jon Watts, who made the Tom Holland Spider-Man Trilogy for the MCU, I only got a quiet one-week theatrical run before its debut on Apple TV Plus on September 27th. It’s playing on precisely one screen here in Montreal and was not screened for critics.
So, what’s going on here? Probably, Apple is still licking its wounds from the embarrassing failure of their mega-budget movies, Argylle and Fly Me To The Moon, which, despite huge casts, cratered at the box office.

The Netflix series Emily in Paris has captivated audiences with its blend of romance, fashion, and French flair. In its fourth season, the series introduced a new character that left viewers intrigued. Genevieve, stepdaughter to Sylvie and newcomer at Agence Grateau, took the fans for a ride with her mysterious and possibly evil character.
Thalia Besson, the actress behind the character, is not a new face in the industry. Born to French director Luc Besson and producer Virginie Besson-Silla, the actress is what we call a ‘nepo baby’. Her parents had previously collaborated in Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy while her father worked on Bruce Willis’s The Fifth Element. Both the movies were huge hits but not the only scores under their belts.
Family Affair: The Besson legacy in film and TV
Thalia Besson is gaining recognition for her role as Genevieve, the potential new antagonist in season four part 2 of Emily in Paris.

Before watching Emily in Paris season 4, part 2, even long-time viewers may need a quick refresher on the show's cast of characters, especially those who are returning for Emily Cooper's (Lily Collins) latest comedic adventure, which takes her from Paris to Rome. Created by Darren Star (Sex and the City), Emily in Paris sees its titular character moving from Chicago to France to provide an American point of view to a French marketing firm. Initially hired on as a temporary social media strategist, Emily butts heads with her bitter, no-nonsense boss, Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu).
Anticipation for Emily in Paris season 4's ending couldn't be higher after part 1's cliffhanger ending, which left the love triangle between Emily, Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), and Camille (Camille Razat) far from resolved. There are many things to remember about Emily in Paris' previous seasons, but, most importantly, Camille is keeping her false-positive pregnancy a secret from Gabriel,...

A “bee-nado” is officially attacking Los Angeles when 9-1-1 Season 8 begins. Following teasers of bees making their way to Los Angeles, ABC has now released the first trailer (set perfectly to “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins) showing how our favorite first responders will be learning of and dealing with those insects—and it’s worse than you could ever have imagined! Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is the one to answer the 9-1-1 call that starts it all. A truck involved in an accident was carrying 22 million killer bees. Yes, 22 million killer bees. That’s enough to kill 44,000 people. (And we thought the promo that we previously unveiled warning that the average human can’t survive 500 bee stings was a stretch!)
