Mel Brooks, who helmed the classic “Star Wars” parody “Spaceballs,” has not returned to the franchise since his 1987 feature. And at a pitch meeting for the “Spaceballs” sequel, it was up to producer and star Josh Gad to catch Brooks up on the happenings of “Star Wars” during the last 38 years.
“Mel is incredibly involved,” Gad said during an appearance on the “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast. “I’ll share a funny story that I haven’t yet shared. When we were pitching him the original conceit for what we wanted to do with the film, at the beginning he goes, ‘I’m just telling you now, I want you to really go into detail because I don’t know a lot about the new ‘Star Wars’ films.’ And I said, ‘Okay.’”

A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away, Mel Brooks blessed Star Wars fans with the ultimate parody… but he hasn’t kept up with the franchise since.
Josh Gad, who is developing a sequel to Brooks’ Spaceballs (1987), revealed that he had to explain the latest Star Wars installments when pitching his take on the follow-up to the beloved parody.

As fall turns into winter, and a chill enters the air, horror fans begin to feast on their favorite holiday horrors. Black Christmas, Gremlins, and Silent Night, Deadly Night are all seasonal staples, and more contemporary offerings, such as Krampus and Better Watch Out, have become new classics. Yet for additional helpings of festive frights, perhaps the following double-feature could be considered; both The Dorm That Dripped Blood and Trapped Alive even hail from the decade where Christmas Horror, as a subgenre, began to take shape and resemble its more modern form.
The Dorm That Dripped Blood also goes by Pranks, The Third Night, and Death Dorm. The later title is what appears on the source print for Synapse Films’ uncut restoration, however, the longer name is what sticks best, even for those who have never seen this 1982 obscurity. Doug Savant, who played Matt Fielding, a gay character on Melrose Place, recently explained why he avoided discussing his own sexuality while on the show. He felt it was important to stay true to the role he was portraying.
On the Still The Place podcast, Savant talked with former co-stars Laura Leighton, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Daphne Zuniga about the challenges of playing a gay character as a straight actor during a time when TV had very little representation.
When we were shooting all those things and the trailers for the show, I said to Sam, our publicist, ‘Do you care to talk about how we’re going to handle this going forward, that there was a gay character?'”
I knew it was exceptional, and I thought people would be interested. But she goes, ‘Well, no, it’s not a big deal. You’re an actor, you’re just playing a character.

Doug Savant from Melrose Place explains why he avoided answering questions about his sexuality while playing Matt Fielding, a gay character, on the ’90s teen drama. He said he felt it was his responsibility to stay connected to his on-screen role.
On the Still The Place podcast, Savant shared with former co-stars Laura Leighton, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Daphne Zuniga what it was like to play a gay character as a straight man during a time when TV still lacked diversity.

Melrose Place‘s Doug Savant recalls why he evaded questions regarding his sexuality while playing gay character Matt Fielding on the ’90s sudsy teen drama, saying he “felt a responsibility” to not distance himself from his on-screen portrayal.
“I think the most shocking revelation was when the call is coming from inside the house,” Savant began telling former co-stars — wife Laura Leighton, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Daphne Zuniga — on the Still The Place podcast about what it was like playing a gay character as a straight man amid a television landscape still lacking diversity.
The Desperate Housewives star recounted an instance with a publicist working at the Pat Kingsley-founded Pmk, who repped executive producer Aaron Spelling, in which he said she did not understand the gravity of the representation. “I had said to Sam, our publicist, ‘Do you care to talk about how we’re going to handle this going forward,...

In 1987, comedy legend Mel Brooks released Spaceballs, a parody of Star Wars that pit space rogue Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his furry companion Barf (John Candy) against the vile Darth Helmet (Rick Moranis). Star Wars mania had by no means abated by that point — Return of the Jedi had come out four years before — but Spaceballs didn't get its own cult of fans until it came out on home video, which is how watched it when I was a tiny baby in the 1990s. I actually think I watched Spaceballs before I watched Star Wars, and it's still probably first in my heart.
Brooks made a couple of attempts over the years to get a sequel to Spaceballs made, but nothing took; according to Forbes, Moranis once pitched him on a movie called Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II, but it never came together. And so a couple...

The actor will produce and star in the film for Amazon MGM Studios and recently revealed that the script’s first draft had been completed.
“Without MGM taking me into their Culver prison cells, I can tell you that the draft is done,” Gad told Forbes. “Everybody who’s read it has been blown away. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.”
Gad says the whole experience has been “sort of a fever dream” and noted that Brooks “has been so unbelievably supportive, involved, and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away.”

Fifteen months ago, during a recap episode of the “Drama Queens” podcast, guest Michaela McManus asked co-hosts Bethany Joy Lenz and Sophia Bush whether they’d ever write a book. Lenz responded that she often writes, and that she would love to tell her story. And then she revealed to listeners something shocking about herself. “I was in a cult for 10 years,” she said. “That would be a really valuable experience to write about — and the 10 years of recovery after that. There’s there’s a lot to tell.”
Four weeks later, she talked about the experience at length for the first time, speaking with Variety over Zoom. As she sat outside her Nashville home, we spoke for 45 minutes about the shame she felt, how her “One Tree Hill” cast tried to help and how she ultimately overcame the fear she had about leaving the group.

A good tasty noir, like “Love Lies Bleeding,” always feels contemporary, even if set in the past; that’s because it should feel as urgent as the love-and-death stakes it’s about. “Killer Heat,” on the other hand, while not quite so old-fashioned that it creaks, definitely plays like a mirage of detective noirs you’ve seen before. To start with: Could there be a worse title? It makes the movie sound like some straight-to-tape potboiler from the ’80s starring Jim Belushi and Daphne Zuniga. “Killer Heat” opens with the voice of its star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who has a way of sounding like Keanu Reeves’ brainier brother), delivering one of those logy “hardboiled” philosophical nuggets to the audience (“The Icarus myth was set on the island of Crete. And apparently no one there had learned much from his story…”).
But just as you’re ready to nod out, Gordon-Levitt, as...

Image Source: Amazon Fortunately, at the age of 98, Mel Brooks can still be called a living legend. Between his film, television, and recording careers, he’s been entertaining us for decades, giving us classics like The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and the Star Wars parody Spaceballs. And since Star Wars has stood the test of time, so has Spaceballs, which is still finding new audiences today. Daphne Zuniga played the film’s princess, and she still speaks glowingly of the experience. At a GalaxyCon Oklahoma City panel’s Q&a session recently, Zuniga expounded on what it was like working with someone who is as funny — and also as serious — as Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks' satirical style of humor has made him one of the most popular comedy directors of all time. Brooks' quick wit and punchy dialogue keeps audiences laughing, especially with some iconic comedic actors. By parodying different genres, Brooks endlessly finds new material.
Mel Brooks is one of the most popular comedic filmmakers of all time, and his movies are filled with classic quotes that can still get laughs decades later. Mel Brooks' best movies showcase his satirical style of humor. He has lampooned different film genres many times, but his parodies go deeper than most. As well as having an unmatched satirical wit, Brooks has a natural ear for comedic dialogue. His movies burst at the seams with punchlines, each stacked on top of one another in quick succession, competing for the audience's attention with visual gags.

When writer/director Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs" comedy spoof of "Star Wars" was first released in 1987, fans of the 'space opera' genre were delighted with the film, but most reviewers dismissed the feature as lame 'shtick', thinking the whole "Star Wars" 'thing' had run its course and best left forgotten. But the fans were right, the film was successful and now producer Brooks with backing from Amazon MGM is finally moving forward at ‘ludicrous speed’, to prep a sequel, to be directed by Josh Greenbaum:
The original "Spaceballs", currently streaming on Max, sees many of the main cast pass away, including John Candy as 'Barf'...

...and Phil Hartman as 'Dink'.

Lisa Rinna shared that she would return to her old television stomping grounds if she were asked. She has been on a few popular shows in her time. Yet, she is currently exploring other aspects of her career. So, where would she go if she was given a second chance? Keep reading for more details.
Lisa Rinna Would Return To Her Old TV Stomping Grounds
For years, Lisa Rinna was known for stirring up trouble while telling women they looked gorgeous on Rhobh. She started in Season 5 and exited after Season 12 which was admittedly her roughest season. During the year, her mother, Lois, passed away and that caused her to lash out in ways she never had. It all culminated with an awful trip to Aspen with her co-stars where Kathy Hilton went on a rampage. After the season ended, Lisa opted to exit the series but this was not her first go-round.

Lisa Rinna says she’s open to returning to Melrose Place after news hit that a revival was in the works.
Rinna has kept booked and busy since her exit from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, landing fashion campaigns and returning to acting. In a new interview, Rinna says she’s down to reprise the Taylor McBride role she played for three seasons in Fox’s primetime soap.
“Well, gosh, I’ve heard about it,” Rinna told People. “I haven’t been approached or anything, but I would love to see what Taylor McBride is up to 25 years later. Wouldn’t that be something?”
Rinna said working on Melrose Place “was one of my greatest and most fun acting experiences,” working alongside “Heather [Locklear] and the whole crew.”
“I mean, it was just a great, great experience,” she added. “So if they need a Taylor McBride appearance, they know who to call.

The Melrose Place reboot could redeem the short shrift given to Doug Savant's gay character Matt Fielding. Changes in the social mores of network TV can advance LGBTQ+ representation in the upcoming show. Although Matt died in Melrose Place, there are two major reasons he could potentially return.
The upcoming Melrose Place reboot could be the perfect place for the show to finally do right by one major character. The Fox primetime soap opera began as a spinoff of the teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210 but quickly became iconic in its own right, running for seven seasons and launching the spinoff Models Inc., though that show only lasted one season. Melrose was previously rebooted on The CW the year after the network made a hit out of their 2008 90210 reboot.
A new reboot of the 1990s show is currently in development with Insatiable creator Lauren Gussis at the helm.

In the early 90s, producer Aaron Spelling and TV creator Darren Star struck primetime drama gold with the high school soap opera Beverly Hills 90210. The show laid the groundwork for some good old-fashioned scheduled viewing for homes waiting to see what kinds of trouble the kids at West Beverly would get into. While the series would get to put its characters in some compromising situations like Brandon’s gambling, Brenda‘s pregnancy scare, Dylan’s drug use or Donna Martin graduating, Spelling would explore more steamy stories with the spin-off Melrose Place. The show would crossover stars as Beverly’s Dylan and Kelly befriended Melrose resident Jake. And when Heather Locklear was added to the cast, the show’s popularity would skyrocket.

The timing of Mel Brooks' 1987 spoof "Spaceballs" was, when one thinks about it, rather peculiar. 1987 was a fallow time for the "Star Wars" saga. The last film in the series, "Ewoks: The Battle for Endor," had come out a full two years prior, and it was not terribly well-received or even widely seen. "Star Wars" had begun making the rounds on VHS, but there was, at the time, no solid plan to make any additional films, nor was "Star Wars" the massive commercial presence it would come to be. As pointed out in "Spaceballs," however, "Return of the Jedi" merch was still lingering in stores; one of the running gags throughout Brooks' film is that the characters themselves own "Spaceballs" tie-in products.
Indeed, in the film's funniest meta-gag, the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner) rent a VHS copy of "Spaceballs" and fast-forward to the scene they're in.

George A. Romero’s elite classic Dawn of the Dead turns 45 years old this year, while Zack Snyder’s remake approaches its own 20th anniversary. But the two different versions of Dawn of the Dead are far from the only two horror movies set inside shopping malls.
“Mall Horror” is basically its own subgenre, and below are two under-discussed gems in the shopping mall arena that are well worth your time as you celebrate the 45th anniversary of the greatest “Mall Horror” movie ever made – and the one that started it all…
Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge (1989)
Directed by Richard Friedman
By the late 80s, the slasher boom had all but dried up. That’s not to say there aren’t gems to be mined from the era, but the heyday had passed. Shot in the famous Sherman Oaks Galleria, Phantom of the Mall is a very fun, very...

Spring break movies represent a nostalgic mix of fun, sun, and raucous partying, but the greatest also make for excellent cinema. Springing from the popular beach party films of the late 1950s and early 1960s, spring break movies are
typically aimed at a younger demographic, but the sub-genre has since branched out and touched nearly every facet of society. What it really comes down to is escapism, and the best spring break movies take the audience to exciting new places that are quite different from their usual environs. Even if they aren't all set on beaches, spring break movies are like little cinematic vacations.
Though many spring break movies are actually set during the mid-semester college break period, the impact of the sub-genre has grown to include movies of a similar style that involve characters outside the usual college age. While many of the early examples were formulaic, the best...

One of broadcast TV's best shows is over, and this one hurts.
Fox announced late Tuesday that it had canceled Fantasy Island.
The news broke less than 24 hours after the Fantasy Island Season 2 finale.
"We were very pleased with Fantasy Island's fun and escapist creative, which we had hoped would gain strong traction among viewers," the network said in a statement, adding:
"We'd also like to thank Fantasy Island's cast, led by Roselyn Sánchez, Kiara Barnes and John Gabriel Rodriquez, crew and executive producers Liz Craft, Sarah Fain and Anne Clements for their partnership on the series."
Fantasy Island averaged 2.8 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in its final season with Live + 7 playback included.
The numbers were very soft for Fox, but the fact that the show had a small group of series regulars meant there was a chance the show could survive.
