One Chicago specializes in keeping us on the edge of our seats. The franchise has always done a fine job of putting beloved characters in situations that test their willpower, their quick thinking, and their ability to adapt.
We saw several Chicago Fire, Med and Pd characters put their lives on the line during the crossover event on January 29. There was barely time to catch one's breath due to the fact that, at any second, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) or Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) could go down for the count.

One Chicago has a lot of characters and storylines to keep track of. It would be a disservice to the flow of a good crossover is every single person was accounted for, which means that some of them are going to have to sacrifice screen time for the greater good.
That's what this article is about. We love these One Chicago characters, but they ultimately did not fit into the vision for what the 2025 crossover event looked like. It would have been nice to see more of them, but we get why they had to spend most of their time on the sidelines.

One Chicago had the unenviable task of weaving over 20 characters into a single storyline that did justice to all of them. It seems tricky, especially given the three hour constraints, but the writers did just that. The crossover was an unabashed success.
Most everyone got a chance to shine over the court of the three-part event, but naturally, some of them shined brighter than others. As a result, we decided to cherry pick the characters we felt were the most thrilling to watch, and did the most in the face of absolute chaos. Here are our One Chicago MVPs! Spoilers ahead.

Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) wasn't directly involved in the story beats of the show, but he proved to be the crossover's Swiss army knife.

The One Chicago crossover put multiple characters in danger, but none suffered more than Trudy Platt (Amy Morton). The Chicago Pd veteran attempted to apprehend one of the men responsible for a gas explosion, but she was ambushed and shot in the back multiple times.
It was a devastating moment, one made all the more visceral by the way the crossover event chose to show it. Platt was shown slamming up against a wall, with blood spilling out of her as she slid to the floor. When her husband, Mouch (Christian Stolte), found her, she was absolutely covered.

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from tonight’s NBC’s One Chicago crossover.
NBC’s Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. came together for an epic crossover event taking the franchise to the next level.
Due to the pandemic, it has been six years since the One Chicago fam teamed up to take down some bad guys but they certainly made it worth the wait. All three shows are produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Wolf Entertainment.
In “In the Trenches,” Chicago’s first responders unite in the wake of a catastrophic gas explosion and fire that threaten a city government building. The episodes aired in a different order with Chicago Fire kicking off the night followed by Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. wrapping up the three-hour procedural extravaganza.
“This was an epic event, from start to finish.

One Chicago pulled it off. There was a lot of anticipation and hype heading into the 2025 crossover event, and the franchise managed to deliver on virtually every front. We absolutely loved the way that all three shows were incorporated into the main plot, and how most of the characters got a chance to shine as a result.
We already provided a spoiler free review of the crossover event, that focused on small character moments and unexpected pairings, but now that the special has aired, we decided that a recap with spoilers was absolutely necessary. There's so much to break down, especially regarding who made it out alive. Obviously, spoilers ahead!
There's an explosion near a government building, which causes the ensemble casts of all three One Chicago shows to arrive on the scene. There are injured and trapped victims all around, which takes up most of Chicago Fire and Med's time.

One Chicago dished out one of its biggest disasters to date in its 2025 crossover. There was a huge explosion, victims trapped under rubble, and an entire train full of passengers who were under threat of having concrete structures collapse on them. It was a tense experience for all involved.
In typical One Chicago fashion, characters came up with clever and often genius methods to save lives and ensure the people responsible for the explosion were brought to justice. One aspect of the three-part story that may have taken some viewers aback, however, were Al Capone's secret tunnels. They were repeatedly referenced throughout, and proved to be play a pivotal role in the plot. So what is the deal? Are these tunnels real?

One Chicago made fans wait a whopping six years between crossover events. We're happy to say, the wait was worth it. The franchise delivered a thrilling, three-part event that incorporated every veteran character and made them a vital part of the solution to a citywide disaster.
There's a lot to take in and a lot of screen time to divided up among Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago Pd, especially given that characters from all three shows appear in all three episodes. It's an Avengers style crossover if we've ever seen one. Which is why we wanted to provide a recap of the 2025 event without spoilers.
We will provide a spoiler-filled review later on, but until then, here's a recap of what went down:

One Chicago is known, and loved, for its integration of different shows. The franchise draws a lot of its strength from the fact that it can pull characters from one of its three titles and drop them into a situation with another cast. It keeps things fresh and generally very exciting.
It's been six years since the franchise has given fans a full on, three-part crossover, though. January 29 is a monumental date for fans, as Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago Pd will be brought in to carry a single, unified storyline. Given how big the casts are for each show, we thought it's be useful to provide a list of every character who is set to appear.

There is a lot of ground to cover in the One Chicago crossover. Not only will the show have to thread a single story through the various areas of expertise of each show's group, but it will make to figure out ways to keep every major cast member in each show involved.
Naturally, some of the characters who appear on the individual shows will be pushed to the side to allow for more of a focus on the veterans. There are two Chicago Pd characters who have played a vital role in season 12, but are confirmed to be absent during the One Chicago crossover. They are Chief Deputy Reid (Shawn Hatosy) and Ada Nina Chapman (Sara Bues).

One Chicago's crossover event will be the most ambitious in franchise history. Fans have never gotten to see a storyline that so thoroughly integrates every character across all three shows. This is especially exciting with regard to the veteran characters.
The promo for the crossover event confirms that established One Chicago faces will be leading the charge. Some of them will be put in harm's way, like Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), while others will be running around and trying to save them.

The fact that Kidd, a Chicago Fire character, and Ruzek, a Chicago Pd character, will be in danger means that their respective teams will be forced to work together to ensure they have it out of their situation in one piece.

Replacing Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) was never going to be easy. The character was a Chicago Fire anchor, a veteran who had been present since the pilot. Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) has done an admirable job, though. He's maintained the same honorable status as his predecessor, but he definitely goes about things in a different way.
We have definitely gotten to know Pascal better over the course of season 13. We have seen him gel with characters like Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and clash with characters like his ex-wife, Monica (KaDee Strickland). The One Chicago crossover is going to be make or break for Pascal, though. It'll be an opportunity to really set himself apart as a man of action.

Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) should, technically, be in the happiest place in their history as a couple. They're engaged to be married, they have a daughter, and Burgess has even been promoted to detective. It's a dream on paper. As we know from watching the current season of Chicago Pd, though, it's been anything but.
Ruzek has had to contend with the death of a close police friend in the field. Burgess, meanwhile, has been dragged into a tricky situation involving a corrupt new Deputy Chief (Shawn Hatosy). Chicago Pd has made it 12 seasons on the strength of its cast. The cases the Iu has to contend with on a weekly basis are interesting, but the appeal of the show really boils down to the actors, and the chemistry they have with one another.
That's why bringing in new talent, and seeing old talent depart, is such a big deal. It's a delicate balance. Ironically, the classic Chicago Pd lineup we know and love was not actually the original lineup. There was a group of actors who appeared in the pilot episode, but then walked, and were subsequently replaced by the people we now recognize as the Og roster.

The California wildfires have done a lot of damage. They have destroyed homes on a level that was previously unprecedented, and displaced thousands of families. It has been a trying time for the city of Los Angeles and its inhabitants.
The fires have also impacted the entertainment industry. Award shows and concerts have been delayed or outright canceled. The next step in Ruzek (John Paul Flueger) and Burgess' (Marina Squercianti) relationship in Chicago Pd can explain the budding between Voight (Jason Beghe) and Chapman (Sara Bues). Ruzek and Burgess have been a central couple in Chicago Pd for the last several years, and they are expected to get married in Chicago Pd season 12. They had a difficult time and broke up at one point, only to slowly get back together as they were co-parenting their adopted daughter, Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams).
Voight and Chapman's relationship is far newer. Chapman is an Assistant State Attorney who has mostly served the function of trying to rein Voight in before he crosses a line that will permanently damage his career. Chicago Pd suffered a major blow when Jay Halstead decided to leave. The actor who played him, Jesse Lee Soffer, wanted to pursue different artistic ventures, and was subsequently written off the show. Then, months later, Soffer was cast in a central role on FBI: International.
It was a bittersweet revelation. It was fun to see Soffer back in the swing of things in a Dick Wolf show, but since the FBI franchise takes place in the same universe as One Chicago, it muddied the water for future crossover events. This is a fear that some fans had, and Pd showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed it during a recent Screen Rant chat.

Hank Voight has easily been one of the most polarizing characters in Chicago P.D. all through his time in the series. For the past decade, Voight has been recognized for his tough demeanor as the Intelligence leader and aggressive interrogation tactics toward suspects. He is a police Sergeant who always puts his unit and those in peril above himself. Voight takes drastic measures and goes beyond the law to take down murderers and criminals in Chicago.
Throughout his tenure on the show, Voight has experienced several scary moments, including losing individuals close to him and those he tried to keep out of trouble. The sergeant himself is creepy due to his intimidating presence and raspy voice when pulling information from villainous culprits. Since Voight plays his job close to the chest, he's been in many life-and-death situations, including a close call in the Chicago P.D. season 11 finale. As such,...

Chicago Pd has been the victim of scheduling tweaks. The police drama, along with the rest of the One Chicago franchise, has been delayed a week due to the Joe Biden farewell speech that will air on NBC at 8 p.m. Et.
Despite only lasting 15 minutes, the speech will cut into the time that's typically reserved for the One Chicago Wednesday lineup. As a result, NBC decided to yank all three new episodes, and air reruns in their place. This was a relatively last minute decision, as evidenced by the fact that promos for the new episodes aired at the end of the winter premiere last week.

We've been waiting on a One Chicago crossover for years. The last one literally took place in the last decade, so it's a major cause for celebration that we will be getting a new crossover event at the end of January.
A lot has changed since the 2019 crossover, the most notable of which are the casts of each of the One Chicago shows. A lot of different faces have popped up in the last six years, and characters who were involved with the previous crossover are nowhere to be found. This will lend a freshness to the proceedings.
Chicago Pd showrunner Gwen Sigan recently discussed the crossover event with TV Fanatic. She didn't reveal any details about the plot, but she confirmed that there would be lots of unexpected interactions and team ups that you didn't see coming.

While most war movies take viewers into the heart of battle, it’s less common to get a glimpse into recruits' experiences training in boot camp before they enter conflict zones. This formative time in a soldier’s military life equips them with the skills and knowledge needed to fight on the front lines and, in some circumstances, can be just as traumatic as actual warfare. While some great post-war movies have explored veterans' experiences adapting to life after wartime, other fantastic films address their training in boot camp.
From historically accurate World War II movies to harrowing portrayals of lesser-known conflicts, boot camp has played a part in some of the greatest war movies ever made. Famed directors like Ridley Scott, Clint Eastwood, and even Stanley Kubrick have used boot camps as a platform to depict the horrors of war and the young soldiers who give their lives in the name of violence.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Chicago Pd season 12, episode 9.
Chicago Pd has had a disappointing few seasons, but season 12 has corrected many of the problems, making the procedural worth watching again. When it originally premiered, Chicago Pd was the best One Chicago show. It focused on the lengths Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) was willing to go to keep Chicago safe and get justice for crime victims. However, in recent years, the series backed off of letting Voight push the envelope, turning it into a run-of-the-mill procedural when television is oversaturated with them.
Chicago Pd season 12 introduced patrol officer Kiana Cook (Toya Turner), marking the first time a patrol officer was involved in the action since Burgess (Marina Squerciati) was promoted in season 4. Cook was promoted quickly, joining the Intelligence Unit within a few episodes. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) has always been a lone wolf. The character is focused on helping others, especially those who work under him in Iu. Chicago Pd has always made it clear that he considers his officers to be members of his family.
This has been Voight's M.O. for 11 seasons. Something has changed. Or rather, something is on the cusp of changing. Assistant District Attorney Nina Chapman (Sara Bues) confessed to having some romantic feelings for Voight. And truth be told, the lieutenant doesn't know how to feel.
To be fair to Voight, Chapman shared her feelings and then informed him that she would be out of town. He didn't have time to respond. We've been patiently waiting for her return, so we can delve into the feelings of both characters and gauge whether a romance is in the cards. Fortunately, we will not have to wait long for Chapman's return.

Chicago Pd has really had a rough go the last few seasons. It has lost Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), both as individuals and a couple. They were vital parts of why Pd was so appealing, but the procedural drama has soldiered on and continued to introduce new and exciting characters.

During a recent chat with Screen Rant, the Chicago Pd showrunner gave her thoughts on Iu exits, and revealed which of the characters she would want to bring back into the fold if she could. Chicago P.D. returned on Wednesday night with a new dramatic episode.
The winter hiatus was long, but new episodes are rolling out all January.
Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 9 began with some additional backstory for Officer Kiana Cook (played by Toya Turner).
The writers could do this because the Chicago P.D. fall finale had no cliffhangers.
Cook’s father is introduced as the owner of a hardware store that appears to be struggling. Later, the focus shifts to the other side of the Cook family, and her mother is revealed to be extremely wealthy.
Cook is estranged from her mom but would lean on her later in the episode.
A Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 9 recap
Cook was leaving her dad’s store when an SUV sped past her and crashed. She went to help out at the accident scene and learned the driver was rushing to pay a ransom for his kidnapped wife and kids.

Chicago Pd is in an interesting place. The show has introduced a new foe in the form of Chief Deputy Charlie Reid, but the dynamic betwen the character and the Iu has not boiled over into antagonism. It still appears as though things are cordial, to the extent that Reid asked Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) to be "friends" in the fall finale.
The use of the word "friends" was loaded, however. The character is seemingly angling to take advantage of the skeletons in the Iu's closet, and his presence in the winter premiere promo photos confirms that he will play a large role in the rest of season 12.

Here's the thing: you've seen the actor who plays Reid before. You've seen him in the same television universe as One Chicago, and you've seen him multiple times.

There’s no way that Deputy Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy) is up to anything good on Chicago P.D., right? He ostensibly seemed to be on Sergeant Voight’s (Jason Beghe) side, ready to let Intelligence operate as the unit has been, but then he started making some questionable moves. And after his last conversation with Voight, in which he made clear he knows stuff about the unit that he could easily use against them since he’s not going to Internal Affairs, well, he has to have plans. Below, showrunner Gwen Sigan teases what’s going on with him, what to expect from Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek’s (Patrick John Flueger) wedding, and more ahead of the January 8 midseason return. You left off with that conversation between Voight and Reid, and I keep becoming more and more suspicious of this deputy chief. What can you say about what...
