The 2025 Sundance Film Festival — and perhaps its second-to-last in Park City — has wound down with the annual awards ceremony.
On January 31, jurors presented prizes in the competitive sections, including the U.S. Dramatic Competition, U.S. Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, World Cinema Documentary Competition, and the Next lineup. Jurors across the sections looked at nearly 90 films representing more than 30 countries and territories.
Hailey Gates’ Iraq war satire, starring Alia Shawkat and produced by (among others) Luca Guadagnino, won the festival’s top award: the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic competition. The politically charged comedy, which follows an aspiring actress in a military role-playing facility, is still looking for U.S. distribution amid mixed reviews out of Sundance. Meanwhile in that section, Eva Victor’s staggering feature debut “Sorry, Baby,” a startlingly wise and unsentimental depiction of trauma set in American academia, won a Screenwriting prize...

Bryn Chainey’s “Rabbit Trap,” starring Dev Patel, Rosy McEwen, and Jade Croot, is a three-hander folk horror deeply rooted in Welsh lore and the precarious balance between humans and the natural world. It concerns a couple (Patel and McEwen) living in a remote cottage who suddenly have a strange child (Croot) burrowing into their lives after they disturb a Tylwyth Teg fairy ring.
“You might try to bury something, but something, it’ll grow,” Chainey said of the traumas lurking at the fringes of the new Midnight section thriller. “I grew up loving the illustrations of Brian Froud. He’s the guy that designed ‘The Dark Crystal’ and ‘Labyrinth,’ and he wrote these amazing books about fairies and goblins and pixies, all the folklore of the Celtic part of the U.K.”
“For me as a kid, these things were real, they were just an extension of nature,” Chainey continued.

Stephen King’s The Monkey trailer was so excessive, it was banned from TV (Photo Credit – Instagram)
A new Stephen King adaptation has taken the horror genre to an entirely new level, with a trailer so shockingly violent that it was outright banned from airing on TV.
King’s adaptations, which are well known for pushing boundaries, are never short on controversy, whether it’s the chilling child murders in ‘It,’ the disturbing scenes in ‘Gerald’s Game’ that caused viewers to pass out, or the intense moments from ‘Pet Sematary.’ But the trailer for ‘The Monkey,’ directed by Osgood Perkins, has managed to top them all.

The 1998 high school horror flick The Faculty is the next on the line to get the remake treatment. Drew Hancock is in line to direct.
Audiences seem to be having a good time with Drew Hancock’s feature debut, Companion. The horror comedy comes from Boulderlight, the same team that brought the wild horror, Barbarian into the world back in 2022. Following the success of that film, they seem to have the pick of many a horror project in Hollywood.
For Drew Hancock, that next project could well be a remake of the 1998 high school horror, The Faculty.
The original featured an ensemble of young talent including a young Elijah Wood and Josh Hartnett and was a fun film, a kind of late 90s teen horror spin on Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Salma Hayek popped up, as did Robert Patrick and Famke Janssen. With Robert Rodriguez directing, the movie possessed his trademark kinetic style,...

Last March, we heard that production had wrapped on the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which is coming our way from the team of producer / genre regular James Wan and director Osgood Perkins, whose credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Gretel & Hansel, and the recent Nicolas Cage horror film Longlegs (you can read our review Here). Longlegs was released by Neon – and they’ll also be giving The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. In anticipation of the film’s release, Perkins was interviewed by SFX magazine, and during that interview he discussed the darkly comedic tone he brought to the material, the story’s setting, and the fact that he had to replace the cymbals-playing monkey from King’s short story with a drum-playing monkey.

“You’ve never seen anything like The Monkey,” King wrote on Threads. “It’s batshit insane. As someone who has indulged in batshittery from time to time, I say that with admiration.” Of course, King wrote the short story on which The Monkey is based.

When it comes to festival midnight films, sometimes it’s best to go in blind and with a lack of anticipation. Rabbit Trap, the directorial debut of Bryn Chieny, stars Dev Patel (Monkey Man) and is produced by Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), which was enough of a hook for this writer. Unfortunately, even with minimal expectations, Rabbit Trap was massively disappointing.
Rabbit Trap Review
Rabbit Trap follows a married musician couple who move to a remote cabin in Wales, where they record a mysterious (and perhaps mystical) sound and meet a strange child who may be harboring a dark secret. Considering that spooky sounds and mysticism are two of the most eerie things there are, this film should work, but it just completely falls apart.

Frank Herbert’s Dune is often hailed as one of the most influential and groundbreaking works in science fiction. Meanwhile, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is a cornerstone of high fantasy. While both authors created sprawling universes with enduring cultural significance, in a revelation that surprises many, Tolkien reportedly harbored a strong dislike for Dune.

This unexpected critique raises intriguing questions. What could have prompted Tolkien, a master of crafting richly detailed worlds, to disapprove of a book equally celebrated for its complex narrative? And why did he avoid elaborating on his opinion?

To many, he will always be Frodo Baggins, the brave little furry-footed hobbit who volunteers to bear the burden of carrying the dreaded One Ring as he leaves his bucolic existence behind while sacrificing himself to save Middle-earth in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
But Elijah Wood has had quite a varied career beyond the Shire ever since he made his film debut at 8-years-old with a small part as Video Game Boy #2 in 1989’s “Back to the Future Part II.” He would go on to land the coveted central role in the epic fantasy franchise based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduring classic when he was 18. Plot: A married couple (Dev Patel and Rosy McEwen) living in an isolated home in the Welsh countryside encounter a mysterious child (Jade Croot), whose sudden, intense devotion to them suggests something sinister is afoot.
Review: Rabbit Trap is another entry into Sundance’s much-celebrated midnight section, a programme which has given us such horror gems as The Babadook, Hereditary, Talk To Me, and last year’s I Saw the TV Glow. Rabbit Trap, which comes from Elijah Wood’s Spectrevision label, is impeccably crafted and acted, but despite its programmed section, it doesn’t seem particularly interested in being a horror film. Instead, it’s more cerebral fare deeply rooted in Welsh folklore.
In it, Rosy McEwen plays Daphne, an experimental musician who composes atonal music using sounds recorded in nature by her audiophile husband, Darcy (Dev Patel). Set in 1976, they poor over their vintage audio equipment to put...

“The only way to be safe is to be the only one left,” we hear a voice-over say at the very beginning of the season 3 trailer, and by now we’re already reasonably perked up enough as to want to know as much as we possibly can.
The trailer shows us that we will be revisiting what happened in the woods a lot – a bunch of teenagers get lost in the woods and decide to kill and eat each other – and the modern day grown up versions of the survivors. The only thing question now is how far they can go to keep the secret forever?

In British writer-director Bryn Chaney’s feature debut, he uses Celtic folklore and the intimacy of sound to unpack a darkness that some might struggle to put in words.
Set in 1973, Rabbit Trap stars Dev Patel and Rosy McEwen as Darcy and Daphne, an influential musical couple from London who retreats to an isolated cabin in the Welsh countryside to finish their next album. But when Darcy records a sound not meant for human ears, he accidentally conjures ancient mystical beings from the forest.
Best viewed in Dolby, the film utilizes hypnotic sounds in every scene, largely through the field recordings made by Darcy in the surrounding woods. In addition to sounds of dripping water, clanging metal and crunching grass, Darcy demonstrates how the medium is sacred as he explains that “sound is a ghost … and your body is the house it haunts.”

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival hit Park City, Utah, once again this year, bringing out Hollywood A-listers to toast independent cinema, find a home for their latest passion projects and find a warm place to land in the otherwise chilly, mountainous city.
Kicking off Thursday and running through Feb. 2, the independent film festival has so far highlighted excellent new work from writer and director James Sweeney with “Twinless,” in which co-stars with Dylan O’Brien (pictured below); a riveting and emotionally knotty two-hander called “Jimpa,” starring John Lithgow as a late-blooming gay man and Olivia Colman as the daughter he left behind; Juliette Lewis as a chair in the body-swap satire “By Design”; and the new music documentary from Oscar winner Questlove, “Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius).”

Peter Jackson undeniably did an impressive job adapting J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Lord of the Rings. The film is hailed as one of the most faithful adaptations of the book. However, it’s also important to recognize that even the best adaptations can miss critical details.
Peter Jackson and the Lord of the Rings cast | Credit: New Line Cinema
Although it is pretty common for a movie to miss some chunks of details and scenes while adapting a book it is acceptable to deal with it as long as it is faithful. Jackson also missed a few important details while adapting the book.
For instance, in The Fellowship of the Ring, Sting is the only sword that glows blue when Orcs are near. While this trait is showcased in the first half of the movie, it inexplicably vanishes in later scenes. This inconsistency is a hot topic among sharp-eyed fans.

Exclusive: The first trailer for Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey is quite the success, with a current running viewership across all platforms including TikTok of 109 million. The Neon movie opens February 21.
The movie, the first for Perkins after the success of Longlegs and based on the Stephen King short story, racked up more than 43M views in its first 24 hours of dropping online and clicked past 100M in its first 72 hours, arguably a record for a non-mpa studio independent horror movie. The figures come from WaveMetrix.
We reported back in September that among those horror films sans TikTok views, 28 Years Later was the second most watched at 60.2M behind It Chapter Two (96M views, $91M opening). 28 Years Later racked up well north of 146M global views.

Among another impressive stack of new horror titles looking to spook audiences at this year’s Sundance, “Rabbit Trap” joins a growing library of psychological folk horrors that have recently offered more (deeply) unsettling creeps than out-and-out scares.
Bowing in the Midnight slot in Park City on Friday and the feature debut of Brit director Bryn Chainey, the film doesn’t just boast an Oscar nominee in Dev Patel among its somewhat limited cast (there are only three characters in the entire feature), but comes with the backing of Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision.
Set in 1976 in rural Wales, “Rabbit Trap” centers on Daphne Davenport (“Blue Jean” breakout Rosy McEwen), an experimental electronic musician who, alongside her troubled husband and collaborator Darcy (Patel), has moved to a remote abandoned farmhouse in the countryside. It’s here where, equipped with a wild laboratory of analogue synthesizers, tape decks, theremins and very little else,...

Ted Bundy was never one to shy away from the spotlight. During the ten years he spent on death row, the convicted serial killer gave interviews with law enforcement officials hoping to push off execution and extend his own life. Investigators from all over the country travelled to a Florida state prison hoping to close cold cases that fit Bundy’s Mo.
Beginning in 1984, he formed a friendship of sorts with FBI profiler Bill Hagmaier who interviewed the notorious prisoner with the intention of gaining insight into the mind of a killer. But is it possible for a decent man to open his mind to extreme sadism and predation without awakening a darkness within his own soul?
In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction podcast, Jenn and Joe conclude their series of Bundy-inspired texts with what is arguably the most successful depiction of the killer to date.

A while back, Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) filmed a movie called The Toxic Avenger, a reboot/remake/reimagining of a cult classic film of the same name from 1984, about a janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste, gets superpowers, and gets revenge. The original movie was made by Troma, which specialized in glorious sleaze. The remake got great reviews from those who saw it, but for a while it felt like it was never going to actually get released into theaters, supposedly because distributors thought it was too niche.
Which is nuts, because obviously it's niche; that's the point of a movie like this. How are film studios going to find any new audiences if they never try releasing anything new? And yes, I know it's weird to call a remake of a 40-year-old movie "new"; I'm just frustrated.
Happily, Variety comes bearing good...

Another January brings another Sundance Film Festival, where 87 feature films, six episodic projects, and more shorts will enter the fray to hopefully help shape the movie year that will be. A festival of that scope, with many first-time directors, can be tricky to navigate and parse, but IndieWire is here to help with 24 films we’re most anticipating. And a few of these we are lucky to have seen in advance.

It’s time for the Sundance Film Festival, and once again I’ll be heading to Utah to bring readers of JoBlo loads of reviews of all the latest indie flicks coming soon to a theater (or streaming service) near you. Located in Park City, Utah (for now anyways), Sundance is always one of my favorite events of the year. Being a movie fan, I love nothing more than binging on movies in the same festival that gave birth to the directing careers of legends like Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Jordan Peele, Damien Chazelle, and so many more.
As has been the case for the last decade or so, the festival is jam-packed with horror flicks, as studios – in particular A24 – have had some major breakouts there, including The Babadook, The Guest, Hereditary, Talk to Me, and last year’s I Saw the TV Glow. So what are we psyched to see?...

Paramount+ with Showtime today revealed the official trailer for the third season of the Showtime original Emmy-nominated series, Yellowjackets.
The two-episode season premiere debuts Friday, February 14 on streaming and on demand for Paramount+ subscribers with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan before its on-air debut on Sunday, February 16 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.
Internationally, the title will launch exclusively on Paramount+ in the UK, Australia, Latin America, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The season will also be available on Paramount+ France later in the year.
Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson (Narcos), Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness.
Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, the series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking...

Fans of the Showtime series Yellowjackets (read our review of season 2 Here) have been patiently waiting to see the bonus episode that was supposed to air sometime between the second and third seasons… but the wait for that is going to be longer than expected, because the decision has been made to hold off on the bonus episode and have Yellowjackets season 3 premiere on February 14th. With that date just a few weeks away, a full trailer has arrived online and you can watch it in the embed above. The images are accompanied by the sounds of the song “Bodies” (as in “let the bodies hit the floor”), a song I will always associate with the Jason X trailer.
Yellowjackets is described as “equal parts survival epic, horror story, and coming-of-age drama.” The story centers on a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un...

“The only way to truly be safe is to be the only one left,” says Melanie Lynskey in Yellowjackets season three.
The warning comes in the new, official trailer (below) for the return of the survival-horror-coming of age drama that follows Lynskey and her fellow survivors of a plane crash that left them stranded in the remote wilderness for 19 months when they were teenagers, leading them to resort to cannibalism in order to survive.
The full trailer follows up on a previous, terrifying teaser that had revealed this season would be about both a haunting and a hunting, as the hit Showtime series continues to follow the survivors in dual timelines: present-day in 2021 with Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress, Lauren Ambrose and Simone Kessell; and in the 1996 crash timeline with their younger counterparts and additional survivors played by Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson,...

The temporary alliances in both the ’90s and the present appear to be crumbling, and several characters are brandishing knives in the Season 3 trailer for “Yellowjackets,” which Showtime released Wednesday.
As the two-minute clip opens, we hear an ominous voiceover from Shauna (Melanie Lynskey): “The only way to be safe is to be the only one left.” A Drowning Pool song, “Bodies,” plays in the background, featuring the lyrics “let the bodies hit the floor.”
The trailer also features Lynskey saying, “Someone wants us dead,” after receiving a package with the mysterious symbol on it from the wilderness. So who’s behind the package? The 40-something Van (Lauren Ambrose) darkly notes, “The only people who know about this are us. Or dead.”
“People are willing to do some messed-up stuff, just to see another day,” says Melissa (Jenna Burgess) in the plane crash timeline. Meanwhile, Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) and...
