Few Westerns, particularly those set in the Old West, are as brutally violent as Bone Tomahawk and the new Netflix series American Primeval. American Primeval was written by Mark L. Smith, who co-wrote the screenplay for The Revenant with Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Peter Berg directs all six episodes of American Primeval. Taylor Kitsch leads an ensemble cast as Isaac Reed, which features Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Shea Whigham, Lucas Neff, and Kim Coates as Brigham Young. In addition to Young, American Primeval alters several real-life historical details and figures.

Like American Primeval, Bone Tomahawk is unafraid to get gory, setting up some thrilling combat action sequences. Escape from New York is one of my favorite movies, so I'm glad the remake appears to have finally died in development. The original 1981 John Carpenter movie has one of the all-time great movie hooks; the most dangerous convict in the world, Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), is forced to rescue the kidnapped President from New York, which has been walled off and turned into a hellish prison. Escape from New York is one of Carpenter's best, filled with great sequences and dialogue.

I've always felt that one minor flaw is that the film's modest budget meant it couldn't fully use its setting. Escape From New York's action is relatively small-scale, and it doesn't take audiences to some of the city's most iconic locations, like Central Park or the subway. In theory, a big-budget reboot could really flesh out the concept and make it much larger, but the Escape from New York...

Tombstone boasts an incredible cast, headlined by Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as the iconic Doc Holiday. It’s no surprise that it quickly became a modern Western classic.

Tombstone has been praised for its gripping storyline, legendary characters, and intense showdowns. It doesn’t re-invent the Western but instead delivers on all fronts of the genre very well. While, some Westerns lean into spaghetti Western tropes, and others use horror to subvert the genre, there are a number of Western movies, like Tombstone, that deliver classic Western stories about the American frontier, the people who tried to tame them, and the lengths they’ll go for revenge and justice.

Director Leigh Whannell, a former candidate to lead a remake of Escape from New York, has addressed what the chances are that the project will happen. Originally released in 1981, the sci-fi action film focuses on Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a former Special Forces soldier who must rescue President John Harker (Donald Pleasence) from inmates in Manhattan. The film has become a classic, with plans for a remake later taking shape under Whannell's leadership in 2019. However, the project has since been shelved, with the director's upcoming Wolf Man film being his primary focus now.

Speaking with ComicBook about Wolf Man, Whannell explained how he would be open to directing an Escape from New York remake in the future, if the project was ever revitalized. Speaking about how some film projects simply don't make it past the planning stage, the director explained how many different factors can result in a movie no longer being made.
