Dick Button, the two-time Olympic champion who revolutionized figure skating by completing the first triple jump in competition, then spun TV ratings gold with his pithy, Emmy-winning commentary, died Thursday. He was 95.
Button died in North Salem, New York, his daughter, actress Emily Button, told The Washington Post.
Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of his sport — as well as degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Law School — Button displayed a tart wit and passion that defined figure skating on network television for more than five decades, starting in 1960 on CBS with the Winter Olympics from what was then known as Squaw Valley, California.
Moving to ABC in 1962 — where he would remain for the next 40-plus years — Button presided over a new age in media and skating. With telegenic stars Peggy Fleming, Janet Lynn, Dorothy Hamill and Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner rising on the world stage during the 1960s and ’70s,...

By the time "Stranger Things" finally wraps up next year, the Netflix juggernaut will have been on (and off) the air for nearly a decade. That means it's been nearly 10 years of Halloween costumes featuring Eggo waffles and fake nosebleeds. It's also been just as long since the show put the midwest state of Indiana on the map by setting its otherworldly action and spookiness in the fictional town of Hawkins, In.
For series superfans, the streets, forests, and shops of Hawkins could probably be drawn from memory. Matt and Ross Duffer's show loves to make its sets look recognizable and feel instantly classic -- like the stuff Universal Studios horror mazes are made of. There's one problem: the show isn't actually filmed in Indiana, and any fan making a trek there will be sorely disappointed.
Instead, Hawkins is largely made up of Atlanta, Georgia and its surrounding areas.

When Charlie’s Angels premiered in 1976, it wasn’t just another crime drama — it was a revolution.
For the first time, three women were the stars of an action-packed TV series, solving crimes, going undercover, and looking fabulous while doing it.
But beneath the glossy exterior of glamorous disguises and high-octane adventures, the show reflected the growing complexities of feminism in the 1970s.
(ABC/Screenshot)
It walked a tightrope between empowerment and exploitation, earning both praise and criticism.
Behind the scenes, contract disputes, casting shake-ups, and creative tensions added to the drama, while the Angels themselves became icons who transcended the small screen.
This is the story of how Charlie’s Angels broke barriers, set new standards, and left a legacy that continues to resonate.

Lucy Liu is game to listen to ideas for a possible Charlie’s Angels reboot and reprise her role of Alex Munday.
In a new interview, Liu said she was open to revisiting the character she played in the 2000 film directed by McG and in which she co-starred alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz.
“I don’t hear much of anything until it actually happens,” Liu told Entertainment Tonight when asked if she had heard anything about a possible reboot.
Although there are no set plans to reboot the franchise, if there were, Liu said, “I’m never going to say no to that. But I would be surprised to hear anything that gets done or undone. You just never know until it happens.”

There was a time when “TV movie” didn’t mean cheesy rom-coms or throwaway thrillers. It meant high-stakes drama, impactful cultural events, and millions of viewers glued to their screens.
Made-for-tv movies were “event television” before that term even existed.
These films took on bold stories, pulled in top-tier talent, and covered issues from nuclear war to domestic violence — sometimes sparking national conversations that kept people talking for weeks.
(ABC/Screenshot)
But as TV evolved, the made-for-tv movie lost its place in the lineup, edged out by reality TV, serialized dramas, and eventually, streaming.
Here’s a look back at the heyday of made-for-tv movies, why they faded, and how they left their mark on today’s TV landscape.

During the mid-1970s, television producer Aaron Spelling and the writing duo of Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts hit upon the most spectacularly novel idea: Viewers loved watching women solve crimes. The eureka moment occurred in 1974 when the great and ludicrously beautiful Angie Dickinson scored a primetime hit with "Police Woman." While I'd argue Dickinson could've burned up the Nielsen ratings via weekly readings of Russian literature shot at the Bob's Big Boy in Burbank, she was a must-watch sensation as a glamorously attired detective. Though the scripts were rigorously formulaic for a '70s hour-long cop show, Dickinson's showbiz rep attracted a host of top tier guest stars; "Police Woman" didn't have much of a hook, but thanks to its star, it had plenty of sizzle.
It took some prodding (ABC execs Barry Diller and Michael Eisner abhorred Spelling's pitch), but "Charlie's Angels" became the breakout hit of the 1976 season.

There’s a line of her Fight Night co-stars waiting for their turn to be photographed on a metallic gold tufted sofa, flown in especially for the New York City afterparty. Phil Donahue, the celebrated King of Daytime Talk who altered the direction of talk television as host of the syndicated “The Phil Donahue Show” and later the redubbed “Donahue” for nearly three decades, died Sunday evening (August 18) following a long and undisclosed illness. He was 88 and surrounded by family, including his wife of 44 years, the actor, producer, author and social activist Marlo Thomas.
From 1969 when his show was picked up for national syndication until leaving the air in 1996, Donahue presided as the unquestioned pioneer of a type of television discussion that for the first time incorporated studio audience interaction as an intrinsic part of the mix. That audience was predominantly packed with women whose opinions were taken seriously. Both “Phil Donahue” and “Donahue” were by design swathed in controversial, issue-driven topics. He was the first to give voice to gay rights activists, feminists and antiwar protestors as well as abortion rights advocates and opponents.

There’s never been a more pugnacious late-night comedy guy than Dave Letterman, a man who lived for uncomfortable moments. From Paris Hilton to Justin Bieber to Farrah Fawcett, Letterman leaned into uneasiness. That mostly made for hilariously awkward conversations, but occasionally, the conflicts threatened to erupt into full-on fights.
Here are five times it appeared like violence might break out on late-night television…
1 Crispin Glover Play
Glover looked like he was about to mix it up with a stagehand when Letterman introduced him, setting the stage for the antics to come. From there, it was hard to tell if Glover was attempting Andy Kaufman-esque performance art or if the young actor was truly disturbed. As Glover melted down on stage, Letterman asked Paul Shaffer if it was the first time he’d watched a man drown. The actor grew more agitated, first flexing his biceps and challenging Letterman to an arm-wrestling contest,...

Carrie Fisher was born for the Hollywood life, since both her parents, actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, were well-known Hollywood stars. Her initial break came with the film Shampoo, but her portrayal as Princess Leia in George Lucas’ Star Wars (1977) propelled her to international recognition. While the actress passed away in 2016 at the age of 60, she left behind a significant Princess Leia legacy that many people still remember fondly.

Peanuts comic strips have referenced a variety of famous figures, including athletes, magicians, and activists. Some notable people mentioned include Doug Henning, Beethoven, Billie Jean King, Claude Monet, and Fred Astaire. The comics also feature famous individuals like George Washington, Babe Ruth, Farrah Fawcett, Elton John, and Martin Luther King Jr.
Peanuts has a tried and true cast and has usually stayed pretty close to its core members throughout its history. However, there were still references to others in the comic strip's run, with famous people being name-dropped from time to time. Los Angeles’ iconic seaside diner Patrick’s Roadhouse at the edge of Pacific Palisades may have slung its last hash brown.
Amid a long-term lease negotiation, and after the financial battering of the pandemic, the half-century-old restaurant just off Pacific Coast Highway, known for its bright green exterior and kitsch décor, is attempting to raise $250,000 for back rent and building improvements as it holds discussions with potential new business partners about the possibility of a return.
While off the radar of industry cognoscenti in recent years, it had long been an unpretentious lure for A-listers like Johnny Carson, Sean Penn and Lucille Ball as well as execs including Jeffrey Katzenberg and onetime Paramount Pictures president Ned Tanen. Its most important Hollywood connection, though, may be its namesake: the seasoned character actor Patrick Fischler, son of the original owner Bill Fischler, who has since died.

In December, Ryan O’Neal died due to congestive heart failure and a battle with leukemia and prostate cancer.
Only one out of four of his children was in attendance at his memorial service, where he was buried beside his late partner, Farrah Fawcett.
O’Neal’s son Griffin O’Neal, 59, claimed that he was “never invited” to the ceremony because “I’m the hated son who told the truth. Dark times in this family. Love means never having to say you’re sorry — and Ryan never did, to anyone,” he told the New York Post.
Griffin drove 2,000 miles from his home in Houston and upon his arrival he was informed that the service would not be held until after Christmas. However, it was held on Christmas Eve.
Tatum O’Neal and half-brother Redmond O’Neal were also not invited to attend the service. Patrick O’Neal was the only one of the O’Neal children in attendance.

Star of Love Story, Paper Moon and Barry Lyndon who remained a prolific screen actor despite his stormy personal life

Back then, his clean-cut onscreen image offered few clues as to the notoriety his private life would gain. But his troubled relationship with three of his children, Tatum, Griffin and Redmond, his drugtaking and a tempestuous relationship with the actor Farrah Fawcett would come to overshadow his long, fluctuating acting career.
As the well-groomed Oliver Barrett IV, a Harvard law student, he falls for Jennifer Cavalieri (Ali MacGraw), a working-class music student, in Love Story (1970). Ryan O’Neal is dead at the age of 82 after years of health struggles. His son Patrick announced the news on Instagram.
O’Neal was one of the true heartthrobs of the New Hollywood era, making many who saw him in “Love Story,” “What’s Up Doc?,” “Barry Lyndon,” and “The Driver” swoon. He also was much more than a pretty face, showing a capacity to let the great directors of the era mold him into something so much more powerful than his looks. And his life was defined in some ways, also, by heartbreak and misfortune: the loss of his great love Farrah Fawcett in 2009, the years-long legal troubles of his son Redmond, the rupture of his relationship with son Griffin, and fraught connection to his daughter Tatum. He was a prickly icon, someone whose public statements and demeanor defied people to like him. But the films he leaves behind...

Another former silver screen icon has passed, with THR reporting that Ryan O’Neal, star of Love Story and Barry Lyndon, has died at 82. While his star had dimmed since his heyday, at the height of his fame, Ryan O’Neal was considered one of the biggest stars in the world. His 1970 classic Love Story, co-starring Ali McGraw, made him one of the decade’s biggest heartthrobs, and he followed it up with a couple of stone-cold classics, including a few movies by Peter Bogdanovich. His first movie with the director, What’s Up Doc, paired him for the first time with Barbra Streisand, with the two reuniting years later for The Main Event – both of which were massive hits. Probably his best movie with Bogdanovich, Paper Moon, paired him with his daughter, Tatum O’Neal, who took home an Oscar for her role in this black-and-white depression-set classic.

“The Brady Bunch” star Barry Williams was inspired by TV mom Florence Henderson to go on “Dancing With the Stars,” he told TheWrap in an interview last week.
Henderson, who played mom Carol Brady on the ’70s sitcom, competed in Season 11 of the ABC competition. “She was my inspiration,” he said. When asked if he thinks of the actress, who died on Nov. 24, 2016, whenever he hits the dance floor, he answered, “Yes. Every week.”
Williams visited the set in 2010 to watch Henderson rehearse and perform. “I was really taken with it,” he said. “She had always mentored me in one way or another. She knew that I had been active theatrically in a lot of musicals, and she thought this would be a great fit for me. I got the bug, and she made me promise to go for it.”

Director McG is open to returning to helm a Charlie's Angels 3, despite the cancellation of previous plans for a third film. McG expressed his affection for the original stars of his movies, particularly Drew Barrymore, who stood up for him when he almost got fired. The possibility of a new movie could bring together different generations of Angels, with the potential for both the original stars and Elizabeth Banks' team to collaborate.
Director McG has admitted he’s open to returning to helm a possible Charlie’s Angels 3, nineteen years after plans for both a third and fourth film were cancelled. Based on the 1970s television series of the same name, 2000’s Charlie’s Angels and its 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle starred Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu as the titular trio of women working for the Townsend Agency. While two more films in the series were announced following...

“It would take a long discussion with those three wonderful performers who I adore,” McG said of the trio.
