Slow Horses season 6 gets a new update from Gary Oldman ahead of the release of season 5. Based on the books by Mick Herron, the hit Apple TV+ show premiered in 2022, quickly becoming one of the most acclaimed original titles from the streamer. Season 4 debuted in September of last year, following Oldman's Jackson Lamb, Jack Lowden's River Cartwright, and the rest of Slough House as they work to take down Hugo Weaving's Frank Harkness, and Slow Horses season 5 is expected to release this year, with season 6 also confirmed.
During a recent interview with Extra TV at the 2025 Golden Globes, Oldman reveals that filming on Slow Horses season 6 is already underway. “This is Adam Randall who directed season 4 and is directing season 6, which we're all going back to tomorrow," the actor said. 2024 is over, and while it was a wasteland at the box office last year for television fans, it was one of the better years as we got many brilliant shows on the big and small scale. With incredible series like Masters of the Air starting the year, there was no way that the rest of the year could go bad, and that’s what happened because we got powerful and thrilling shows like Shōgun, Fallout, and 3 Body Problem. So, we compiled the list of the best returning and new shows on streaming, Cabel, and networks.

As though to provide a measure of solace in a year when the world news could hardly have been more depressing, 2024 has provided far more cinema of quality than has been seen for a very long time. I can come up with no less than twenty-five titles that count as exceptional works, at least half of which are close to perfection. Even so, that does not mean that 2024 has been a year without worries about where cinema is going. The great films are there but how readily can they be seen? Gary Oldman, who stars as grumpy yet gifted spy boss Jackson Lamb in Apple TV+ hit “Slow Horses,” has been recruited by the real MI5 – to narrate a Christmas poem.
In collaboration with the streaming platform, the British counter-intelligence agency have published a festive video on their Instagram page featuring Oscar-winner Oldman narrating a contemporary twist on the poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.”
Titled “A Christmas Story from MI5,” the video shows various agents at their computers at the spy agency’s London headquarters Thames House while Oldman narrates in the voice of his “Slow Horses” character Jackson Lamb.
“’Twas the night before Christmas when all through Thames House not a creature was stirring, just the click of a mouse,” he intones. “Then footsteps on stairwells, then flickering screens, the clackety keyboards of a hundred machines. The hustle, the bustle, the hive of activity, not the typical scene of your Christmas nativity.

One of the most memorable episodes of "Seinfeld" is named after the grand love story "The English Patient," which would go on to win the Best Picture Oscar a few weeks after the episode's airing on March 13, 1997. "Seinfeld" is known for finding humor in the small, ordinary things like disliking a movie and not understanding why it's so beloved. Everyone seems to love "The English Patient" — Elaine's boyfriend (who dumps her for disliking it), her friends, and even her boss who insists on taking Elaine after she lies about not having seen it. The World War II-era blockbuster is about a plane crash survivor with a burned face who recovers at a picturesque Italian monastery. While a kind nurse cares for him and tries to discover his forgotten identity, flashbacks reveal his passionate affair with a married Englishwoman.

Over the past few years, Apple TV+ has been attracting a host of A-list actors to their original shows, many of whom rarely work in TV. Apple TV+ has never had as many subscribers as other big streaming platforms, but it's consistently delivering some of the most entertaining shows on TV. One of its main strengths is that it consistently attaches big names to its shows, and these actors have elevated their shows.
Actors like Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett are bona fide movie stars, but they have all starred in their own Apple TV+ shows. While this isn't exactly unheard of, it's remarkable that there are so many Apple TV+ shows with A-list stars. This is one way that the streaming platform has managed to differentiate itself from the competition, and it has produced some unforgettable performances.

Following the 2024 premiere of Slow Horses season 4, audiences are already preparing for the fifth season, yet the next installment may face some competition from another similar spy thriller. Since 2022, Slow Horses has been a rising star in television. With an astonishing 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, the series is lauded for its reworking of the espionage genre and its incredible cast, which includes Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, and Kristin Scott Thomas. Now, Slow Horses season 5 is on the way and season 6 has been confirmed, meaning its reign is not ending any time soon.
At the moment, Slow Horses has very little competition in its genre. Although there are a number of popular crime and spy shows streaming at the moment, from Reacher to The Night Agent, Slow Horses stands out in a few different ways. First and foremost, Slow Horses streams on Apple TV+, which means it is the leader on its particular platform.

Working opposite a huge ensemble of British acting legends can have its challenges according to Emily Watson, especially when you’re under the direction of someone like Robert Altman, who likes to keep things loose.
During a recent interview with Vulture, Watson shared that while shooting the 2001 murder-mystery “Gosford Park,” she was concerned over Altman’s laissez-faire style, especially in regards to her big scene in the film, in which her servant character butts into the conversation being had by the guests she’s serving.
“It was a giant half-an-hour reset [between takes] because of all these quails that people were eating,” Watson said of shooting the scene. “And I hadn’t nailed it! He said, ‘I think we got it.’ And I was thinking, I haven’t gotten it. “Slow Horses” is Apple TV+’s Clydesdale. The streaming service has given the Gary Oldman-led spy drama an early Season 6 renewal, which means the reliable workhorse of a show is likely to become Apple TV+’s first series to run for more than five seasons. The announcement comes just after the conclusion of Season 4 on October 9. Apple announced the Season 5 pickup back in January.

Slow Horses season 6 has been renewed at Apple TV+, with book and story details revealed. After breaking out at the most recent Primetime Emmys, with nine nominations, the Apple TV+ spy dramedy wrapped up Slow Horses season 4 in somber and shocking fashion. Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) share a drink in stunned silence, following the death of a Slough House team member. It's a more overtly emotional territory for the Mick Herron adaptation, which will continue for at least the next few years.
Deadline confirms that Slow Horses season 6 has been renewed, with season 5 confirmed to be released in 2025. The upcoming episodes will follow what happens when the central spies go out on the run after Diana Tavener (Kristin Scott Thomas) gets them all involved in a fatal game of retribution and revenge. For a show called Slow Horses, production sure moves fast on Apple TV's prize spy thriller series. No sooner had the Season 4 finale of the streaming giant's take on Mick Herron's Slough House books aired than word came out that shooting's wrapped on the show's fifth season. And now today, Apple TV+ has announced that a six-episode sixth season of the Gary Oldman led, Emmy-winning show is heading our way.
Per Apple's official press release, the sixth outing for Oldman's Jackson Lamb and his band of MI5 rejects is already shaping up to be another high-stakes affair. "Season six sees the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge," read the series' logline, which — if nothing else — confirms to us that Kristin Scott Thomas will make it through whatever trials and tribulations await in Slow Horses'...

It also shows Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) expressing an unprecedented level of trust and admiration for Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman).
In the 47-second clip, Taverner tells Claude Whelan (James Callis), the man who is technically First Desk at MI5, “Lamb’s here. He says he knows what’s coming next,” after an unspecified crisis.

The recently concluded fourth season of the spectacular Apple TV+ spy series "Slow Horses" continued to prove that it's one of the best shows on television, with the season culminating in a big revelation about River's parentage, a literally explosive climax, and a fatal shootout at Slough House. But one of the saddest scenes of the season comes just moments before the finale's end credits, when MI5 agent River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) moves his confused grandfather, former agent David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), into an assisted living facility because the man has been increasingly suffering so acutely from dementia. It turns out, the only reason it played out in that fashion was because of a different moment that happened in the previous season.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains light spoilers for “Slow Horses” Season 4.]
A funny thing happened the last time I was asked to recommend a TV show: The person asking had already seen it. Typically, when a stranger finds out I’m a TV critic and inquires what they should be watching, whatever my screen-addled brain can think of is either too new or too random to register. This time, though, I had a worthy pick. Habitually high-quality and relatively obscure, “Slow Horses” was bound to become this dad-aged partygoer’s new favorite series. But when I suggested the Apple TV+ spy thriller (you always have to include where to watch it), he said, “Oh, I love that show!”
Now, I’m not one to extrapolate success in the streaming age from a single conversation, but there’s more than anecdotal evidence suggesting “Slow Horses” is finally gaining steam. It’s hovered near or at the top of Apple...

The character death at the end of Slow Horses season 4 gets a candid response from two of the show's stars. The spy dramedy ended its fourth installment on Apple TV+ by going full circle in several ways. One of those was the death of a prominent Slow Horses cast member, which was teased in the premiere episode. It ended up unfolding very differently, with Marcus Longridge (Kadiff Kirwan) dying in a shootout at Slough House.
In an interview with Screen Rant's Tessa Smith, Kirwan and co-star Aimee-Ffion Edwards react to Marcus' death at the end of season 4. Kirwan reflects on filming the shootout, which he says took two weeks, and explains why it was a dream to film. Bleecker Street executives Kent Sanderson and Myles Bender can vividly remember their first time seeing “Eye in the Sky,” a drone warfare thriller starring Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman that premiered in 2015 at Toronto Film Festival with hopes of finding distribution. Not long into the Canadian screening, they were held rapt by film but quickly realized their contemporaries in the room didn’t feel the same way.
“Within 15 minutes, I started watching a lot of other buyers get up and leave. I guess they felt the film was too challenging,” says Sanderson, Bleecker Street’s president. He and Bender, head of marketing and creative advertising, pushed for their boss, the film company’s co-founder and CEO, Andrew Karpen, to watch the film so they could bid on the distribution rights. Bender recalls, “We were looking at each other and saying, ‘What are we seeing that they aren’t?’”

The penultimate episode of Slow Horses Season 4 ends with River in MI5’s custody—specifically Emma Flyte’s (Ruth Bradley)—only for mercenary Patrice (Tom Wozniczka), who works for Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), to attack, leaving agents dead, Emma down, and take River (Jack Lowden) with him. How will MI5, specifically First Desk Claude Whelan, react? TV Insider talked to James Callis about that, his character’s dynamic with Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas), who’s clearly much more comfortable in charge, and more. The fifth episode ends with River being taken at the end of the episode. What can you preview about how Claude deals with that in the finale? James Callis: Claude always believes that he is doing the right thing, and one might say thus the world is destroyed by people with good intentions. And to be fair,...

Spoilers are ahead for Slow Horses season 4, episode 4, "Returns."
Slow Horses season 4, episode 4, "Returns," reveals a lot more about Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving) and the mysterious Les Arbres compound. As seen in Slow Horses season 4, episode 2, River Cartwright's (Jack Lowden) investigation into why his doppelgnger was sent to assassinate his grandfather, David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), takes him to Lavande. A small town in France, Lavande is home to an abandoned compound, which River later learns is called Les Arbres. Meanwhile, back in London, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and the rest of Slough House's agents try to cover for River, who effectively faked his own death.
The blood test results have tipped both Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas), MI5's Second Desk, and Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley), the new Head of the Dogs, off about River's plan. As the pair work to track down the Cartwright men, Taverner uncovers another insidious thread.

There was much enthusiasm but little optimism regarding the contemporary film market at San Sebastian’s third-annual Creative Investors’ Conference, which wrapped this afternoon.
Hosted at San Sebastian’s imposing, hipster-coded contemporary arts center Tabakalera, the conference runs for two days and features onstage Q&As with execs from the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Attendees include Mubi’s Bobby Allen, Axel Kuchevatzsky of Infinity Hill, LuckyChap’s Bronte Payne, and Netflix’s Teresa Moneo.
The conference is hosted in collaboration with CAA Media Finance and the focus is broad, with a tangential connection to what most speakers in the room described as Spain’s bustling film sector. Here are some of the most prominent talking points from the sessions.

Halfway through season 4, Slow Horses has finally revealed more about its antagonist, Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), as well as his possible connection to Slough House agent River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) and former MI5 operative David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce). In Slow Horses season 4, episode 1, two violent events unfold. First, a man using the MI5 alias Robert Winters ignites a car bomb in the WestAcres shopping center. Later that evening, an assassin breaks into David's home and pretends to be River, prompting the elder Cartwright to shoot and kill his grandson's look-alike.
By the end of the episode, Slow Horses reveals what happened to River. Still very much alive, he uses the dead look-alike to his advantage. After disfiguring the would-be assassin with his grandfather's gun and planting his ID at the scene, River tries to retrace the dead man's footsteps. While much of the second episode has viewers wondering why, exactly,...

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Slow Horses season 4, episode 1
Slow Horses star Jack Lowden opens up about the twist involving his character, River Cartwright, at the end of the season 4 premiere. Going back to the Slow Horses season 3 finale, which offered a preview of the episodes to come, it was teased that a member of Slough House would be killed. But that information somewhat clashed with a scene of Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), the Slough House boss, who seemed indifferent to the news. It turns out that is because Lamb quickly suspects that River Cartwright faked his own death.
In an interview with Radio Times Maganize, Lowden opens up about River's fate inSlow Horses season 4 which is based on the Mick Herron novels. The actor, nominated for an Emmy for his role in the Apple TV+ spy dramedy, praises the storyline and indicates his own surprise at River's potential death.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Slow Horses season 4, episode 1.Aptly titled "Identity Theft," Slow Horses season 4's opener picks up where the show's third season left off. An adaptation of Mick Herron's Spook Street, the fourth Slough House novel, Slow Horses season 4's story puts River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), one of Slough House's newest inductees, and his grandfather, MI5 legend David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), in the cross-hairs of a vast and potentially very personal conspiracy. At the end of season 3, River brings the "Footprint" file to his grandfather, who suggests they destroy the information before damning evidence about MI5 was leaked to the public.
Knowing that his grandfather will put MI5's reputation first, River makes a copy of the file to leak. The fallout sees Ingrid Tearney (Sophie Okonedo) forced to resign from MI5 a move that finally allows Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) to secure the highly sought-after "First Desk" position.
