A birthday becomes a watershed event in the life of a boy on his journey to manhood. In 1940, a black boy must escape north under threat of lynching in his home state of Mississippi. Fifteen years later, desirous of a journey home to reunite with his mother and family, he faces the dilemma of whether or not the South, as it was when he left, is the same.
