- Chinese-Canadian Eve Eng was born in 1966, in the year of the fire horse. In Chinese culture, fire horse children are notorious for being troublesome. In 1975, nine year old Eve is looking for some meaning for her life, especially after her mother, May-Lin Eng, miscarries, and her paternal grandmother passes away, the latter event particularly concerning not so much for the event itself but the circumstances leading to the death. The Engs follow traditional Buddhist philosophy, primarily as a cultural tradition. While her husband Frank Eng is away in China dealing with his mother's burial, May-Lin doesn't stop their eldest daughter, Karena Eng, from pursuing knowledge of and eventual faith in Christianity, most specifically Catholicism. May-Lin sees it as a cushion for ensuring a good life and good after-life, as much of Christian teaching follows that of Buddhism anyway. Eve follows in her sister's footsteps. While Karena becomes a devout Catholic to the expense of her Buddhist upbringing, Eve takes whatever she can from wherever she can to apply to her life for it to make sense, often with disastrous or confusing results. It isn't until she comes face to face with the fire horse that life becomes a little more understandable for Eve.
- Five years in, bank colleagues Nadine Ship and Jonathan Evans hit a road block in their personal relationship. Nadine wants their relationship to move to the next level, whereas Jonathan is happy keeping things the way they are. Nadine feels re-energized when a new bank customer starts flirting with her. But things take a more significant turn in Nadine and Jonathan's life when a masked robber comes into the bank and following the heist, takes Nadine hostage. As her assailant takes Nadine along on his personal mission, Jonathan follows a hunch of his own on the identity of the robber in an effort to try and win back Nadine, who was slowly drifting away from him.
- Over a year after bit actress Liz Woodward leaves him at the altar, comedy writer Gene Maxwell is still having trouble dealing with the situation and his life. Writing "Fear Knot", a novel about letting go of one's fears to be able to tie the knot, which he obviously wrote for Liz but which she has yet to read, probably didn't help. Unexpectedly, Liz, who he has not seen since that day, returns with an unusual request: help her father, Malcolm Woodward, move from his dingy basement suite into an apartment, as she has a movie assignment in Prague during when he has to move. After initially feeling the request unreasonable considering the circumstances, Gene agrees on what he considers compassionate grounds for Malcolm. Through it all, Gene has to deal with: what he thinks Liz's return means, which he, deep in his heart, hopes is a reconciliation; the advice of his overbearing parents, George and Gisha, and of his best friend, dance instructor Herbert; and cantankerous ex-pat Brit Malcolm himself, who initially does not want Gene around, but who ends up relying and confiding in the one person who is there for him during his own time of need, especially as he deals with a secret he does not want Liz of all people to know.
- No Ogawa, a young Japanese man, loves American western movies. What little English he does know he learned from these movies. When he is fired from his latest job at a fast food restaurant, he decides to become a cowboy. In his youth, he had a same-aged pen-pal named Kate Beatty, who he plans on visiting in the Canadian prairies specifically because she told him she was a cowgirl. No has plans literally and figuratively of riding off into the sunset with Kate. No's dreams are dashed when he arrives in Canada and finds that Kate is not a cowgirl, but an artist. She recently returned to her hometown after living in the big city, and has since led a relatively reclusive life with no husband on the horizon. As such, Kate's mother, with whom Kate does not confide, is hoping that Kate and No do end up together. He is even staying with her while in town. But Kate is harboring a secret, the reason for her being so reclusive. Her secret is not so secret, at least to her mother. Bill, a local postman, becomes No's friend and protector, the latter to protect No from getting hurt as he knows that No, in this case, will not get the girl of his dreams.
