Marcelino is an orphan who grows up in a monastery. One day when he eats his small meal in a room full of old things, he gives a piece of his bread to an old wooden Jesus figure--which actually takes the bread and eats it. Getting a wish granted for his donation Marcelino wishes to see his mother.

Jacinto, a retired bullfighter who lives miserably with his nephew Pepote, receives a letter in which he is informed that, according to an old agreement, he must participate in a mock bullfight that will be celebrated that day in Las Ventas bullring. The letter seems to him a joke in bad taste, since he has not signed any contract; but while Jacinto is picking up cigarette butts around, he checks that his name is on the poster.

In the nineteenth century, in Sierra Morena and in the Serranía de Ronda, a lot of bandoleros proliferated, who, alone or gathered in parties, sowed panic by assaulting and murdering travelers. Many of them were sung in poems that gave origin to the myth of the generous bandit. In fact, most of them were ruthless and unfeeling men. Nevertheless, one of them, Lucero, was considered in the whole mountain range like the paladin of the disinherited ones of fortune.
