You really feel for Steele who has had a troubled past but is determined to put it all behind him, and be a good father and role model for his daughter. The trouble is that serious hurdles keep cropping up and he struggles to prove that he has changed and can look after his daughter, until he meets his daughter's teacher and she supports him.
