The Reign of Goddesses #2

Sirens and Leviathans

Rate this book
Goddess of the sea.

Head of the Zephyr Maritime Administration.

Spymaster.

Amphitrite has always lived in the shadows of her sisters, but the shadows are where she does her best work. Living two lives was always easy enough for the Goddess. From being a pirate ship captain chasing secrets instead of gold to an upstanding government official, she has worked alongside her spies and sirens for centuries to guard both Halcyon and the sea.

But a war has started against the Titans, and the darkness taking over the sea is now more than she can handle alone.

West Murphy has been the golden heir all his life, making selfish choices and surrounding himself with disposable people. That was until the night an act of violence forever changed his life. Now, feeling betrayed by everyone he knows, he considers himself a hollow shell of a man with no true purpose.

That is, until a tsunami changes the tides of his fate forever.

This is book two in the "Reign of Goddesses" series. To truly enjoy book two, it is recommended that you read book one.

TW: adult subject matter discussed. Recommended for 18+. Scenes of violence and assault are all happening in the past.

C.D. Britt

C.D. Britt began her writing journey when her husband told her she needed to use her excessive imagination to write stories as opposed to creating a daily narrative for him. Ever since she penned her first words, life has been a lot more peaceful for him.

She currently resides in Texas where she has yet to adapt to the heat. Her husband thrives in it, so unfortunately, they will not be relocating to colder climates anytime soon.

Their two young children would honestly complain either way.

When she is not in her writing cave (hiding from the sun), she enjoys ignoring the world as much as her children will allow with a good book, music, and vast amounts of coffee (until it’s time for wine).

C.D. Britt is the author of Shadows and Vines and the upcoming book, Sirens and Leviathans.
Both books are part of the Reign of Goddesses series.

ETA: Sirens and Leviathans will be .99 cents as of June 28th - July 5th!

I highly recommend my Goodreads friends take a chance on this new author. This is the second book of hers that has impressed me. I’m honestly surprised a publisher hasn’t hopped on this.

What an amazing opening! There were female pirates, sirens, and Medusa. I would definitely read a book solely about this point in Amphitrite’s life. Yes C. D. Britt, that is a hint 🙈. And yes readers, Amphitrite and Medusa are best friends in this book which I thought was really cool, although I'd have liked to have seen more of their relationship.

For those of you who havent read book one, this series is set in a post-apocalyptic version of our world. Not much has changed, but the usable land and water has shrunk and three goddesses have decided to take control unbeknownst to the mortals. There's a really interesting mix of reality and mythology.

"You're legitimate now. A real stand-up gal," Medusa snickered as they took in the government building from the water's edge.

Each book follows a different sister with Amphitrite being our current main character. A former pirate queen, sea witch, and spy master, Amphitrite is a very interesting character that now spends most of her time in her Maritime Administrative office. West, also known as the former Playboy of Halycon, is our other main character who is dealing with new powers that only Amphitrite can help him develop. Honestly, he's a bit of a brat at first but definitely matures.

I loved watching the relationship between Amphitrite and West develop. They both drive each other mad and I love it. It felt like the relationship developed slowly but they kissed by 60% so I guess it's not slow-burn, I'm just impatient 😂. They're really good together and their plot is definitely interesting. I love the new mythology that has been brought in, which connects to an overarching plot.

Finally, I absolutely must compliment the author on her writing. It's so good and the use of third-person works really well here. I'm so excited for book three! Hera is quite a cold character so it's going to be interesting getting to know her and seeing her (probably) fall in love.

“I will fight for you until I take my last breath,” he whispered against her lips. ”As will I,” she promised, taking him into her arms and loving him once more before the sun rose in the sky."

His life was no longer his own. He felt like it belonged to everyone else.

First glance: the title is clever and will make sense once you read it. The cover is gorgeous!

Sirens and Leviathans is the continuation of the Reign of Goddesses series. Although it follows a different sister and couple from the first book, Shadows and Vines, we did meet West and Amphitrite then. Sirens and Leviathans takes place not long after the first.

Everything West knew was a lie. When he learned who he was, he became angry at the world.
Amphitrite puts on a mask in front of everyone, unable to be herself. She wants someone to see her for who she is, to understand her.
Their relationship was rocky at first. But, eventually, West and Amphitrite came to an understanding. They bring out the good in each other and are there for one another.

Everything is not what it seems. Whether right or wrong, people do things because they believe they’re doing the right thing. You never know if someone is good or evil. Their intentions and actions are subjective to others.

C.D. Britt creates a world where you will want to invest in the characters and their stories. Not just the main characters but the side ones as well. It’s Greek mythology with a twist. The characters may seem perfect to others when in reality, they’re flawed. But, you can relate to them even if the story doesn’t occur in today’s world.

Side note: from the very beginning, I didn’t like Hera. I can’t put my finger on exactly why; I know that I don’t. However, C.D. Britt shows us that there’s always more than meets the eyes with each book. So I believe that Hera will be a character that I will learn to love, especially in her story, Storms and Embers, coming on October 4, 2022.

Thank you, CD Britt, for an ARC.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨(4 or 4.25) I can't decide yet.

I LOVE power couples!!! West gave me Oliver Queen vibes! Also, I really enjoyed this version of Medusa. I would love a prequel of her and Amphitrite's pirate days! Also, justice for Darren! Bro, deserves the world!

12/7/24 I got to meet the author! She was so kind and thoughtful! She even signed my book for me!

If you liked this book, then I suggest:

C.D. Britt is quickly becoming one of my new favorite authors. When I finished reading Shadows and Vines, the first book in the Rein of Goddesses series, I couldn’t wait for the next book. I loved the retelling of greek gods and myths and the twist on the story of Hades and Persephone. This second book did not disappoint! Sirens and Leviathans tells the story of Persephone’s sister Amphitrite and Devon’s best friend West. All of whom we meet in Shadows and Vines and like with the previous book, where Hades is actually an alter ego used by Persephone. In this story Poseidon is really Amphitrite. Amphitrite is the Goddess of the sea. I love that she is a strong woman without it feeling forced or overdone. She is accustomed to living in the shadows of her sisters but that’s where she does her work as a spymaster. Finding the answers to the secrets that escape others. With her most trusted friend Medusa. Yes THE Medusa.

West Murphy used to be known as the Playboy of Halcyon, until a tragic event that left him scared and has him leaving the life he knew to get revenge. Now after a few years West is home. He learns that his best friend who he watched die, is in fact alive and a God! That would be enough to scramble anyones brain. But to top it off West learns his family has been keeping secrets of their own and his father is the Titan Oceanus. West suddenly finds he has powers to control water! That’s a lot to take in. Poor West.

Amphitrite must train West on how to use and control his new powers. Together they must stop the dark waters from spreading before it destroys the ocean and everything that lives in it. But who is behind this? Will they find them before it’s too late? Secrets, deception, mystery adventure and romance fill the pages of this book. I highly recommend you give this series a read. I can’t wait for the next book!

I am currently writing this review at 1am so I apologize for anything nonsensical. This series just keeps getting better and better! I could hardly put this book down. In a time where there are currently many Persephone/Hades retellings (which I also love!) it’s so nice to read a mythology retelling about Amphitrite. I’m so happy that this series will focus on the women of mythology like Amphitrite, Hera, Medusa and many others. Because let’s face it, the women should always be in charge. Sirens and Leviathans portrays the goddess of the sea (Bye Poseidon) as fierce and passionate and I love everything about her and this book. Her love interest West is competing for my favorite character in this series with his humor alone (sorry Thanatos and Hera you have some competition). The book had me gripped from the beginning and I couldn’t wait to read more banter between West and Amphitrite while hoping they would finally give in to the pull between them. I had many ah ha moments only to have my suspicions thwarted and then returned many times (insert frustrated yelling at fictional characters). I’m very much looking forward to the conclusion of this series and especially reading from the point of view of the sassy Hera! Everyone please read this series asap!

This sequel is a great follow-up to C.D. Britt's debut book in The Reign of Goddesses series. Continuing in a world where the Gods we know are actually Goddesses, this book centers on Amphitrite, known by the ancients as Poseidon and by the current humans as the head of transportation. Our main guy in this story is West, the son of the Titan Oceanus- unbeknownst to him. The conflict with this book is all about a lack of control- West feeling like he can't control his own life with the realization of his powers and responsibilities, and Amphitrite feeling like she can't control her own domain as the Dark Waters get stronger. The two of them resist being forced together in his training, but when a massive incident happens on the ocean, Amphitrite and West must work together to find their hidden antagonist.

Amphitrite really hung back in the first book, but in this book we see why. Her character really pops and is so enjoyable to read. I'm so excited to read the next book!

Sirens and Leviathans, the Reign of the Godesses Series, by C.D. Brit

This is the second book in this series and is actually the first book I’ve read by this author. It can be read as a standalone. Characters from the previous book are present but the story focuses on West and Amphitrite.

Amphitrite is a Goddess, she’s been around for a hot minute, but she’s always been alone. She’s tasked with keeping the dark waters at bay in the ocean. When Oceanus, a titan, fathers a son destined to become a guardian just like her, she binds the babe’s power. The baby was supposed to be a human, not a titan.

Fast forward and West is an adult. He’s been through some trauma and, oops, his powers are unbound and he discovers them while standing before a tsunami. Amphitrite is to train him to use his powers after. She needs help with the black waters.

The two train and become close, very close. Family secrets are revealed and ancient secrets are uncovered.

I loved how this book immediately pulled me in and kept me hooked. The world development was creative and gave me post apocalypse vibes. Most of the earth was lifeless in this book thanks to the great wars.

The characters were well thought out and each one had significant growth. Both of them have baggage and while neither of them completely get rid of it they learn how to move forward without the extra weight.

With an easy flow and invigorating climax, I could not put down this story. It would appeal to readers interested in Greek mythology, retellings of Greek god/goddess stories, and those interested in fantasy romance. I highly recommend this novel!

Just as I loved the first book, I loved this one. It was so beautiful to see the two underdogs of this series come out on top in their own story. Two water gods, learning to work with each other and falling in love to save their ocean, so good! I loved seeing how vulnerable West could be when he wasn't being an ass. And I'm glad Amphitrite got to show both sides of herself, calm goddess, and furious Siren.

I loved all the characters that filled this book, and the mention of Atlantis, just the way the stories I know from childhood are interwoven throughout the story, makes me so happy!

I am sad West lost Oceanus, his father, but I understand his sacrifice. And I really loved how Hera spared not just West's mother, but Medusa as well. Those two incidents broke my heart.

The battle continues, the focus on the ocean and those who protect it this time. This book is full of pain, growth, and triumph. I enjoyed it so much and am excited to begin the next one (though also not wanting to finish the third since that ends the series).

Amphitrite and West's story was full of underwater action, heartbreak and vengeance as deep as the oceans. The plot of the mysterious shipwrecks was kind of interesting, and to add the legend of Atlantis in here was just the cherry on top!

Sirens and Leviathans is the second part in The Reign of Goddesses series by C.D. Britt in which you will follow Persephone, Hera and Amphitrite, the female equivalents of Hades, Zeus and Poseidon. In the first part in this series you had the change to get to know Persephone, and I really enjoyed the way C.D. Britt has managed to create a unique story about goddesses and the normal world. What goddess will this book feature? Will this story be just as good?

Goddesses, Titans, Demi gods, all in the modern world, can it get any better than that? Well yes.... this isn't a tale purely about them, it's also a tale of remorse, of finding love, as well as a mystery. Be prepared to have your mind blown, these godesses are NOT what one expects! This book is the 2nd in a series but can easily be read as a standalone. I love reading how falable goddesses are, it makes them more"real". Amphitrite is the goddess of the sea and a darkness is threatening to overcome the entire ocean and it's inhabitants. Someone or something is killing people and Amphitrite has vowed to find the culprit. But there's a complication, a young man, with incredible powers, was bound by Amphitrite as a baby and he is the most petulant young man! I loved him character, a typical gorgeous playboy, who suddenly finds himself at the centre of saving the world! It's not easy to describe his character in a sentence but he's truly entertaining! And boy does he make a turnaround, it was definitely "yes West! Go West!" I love the romance brewing and the events leading up to it. The fantastical Loved the shock of the betrayal, but it's it true that the ones who are the closest are usually the ones to betray! The build up was so dramatic, I had an inkling but was still flabbergasted when I read who it was. As only the 2nd book by this very talented author, I'm anticipating the sky's the limit for her!

GREAT STORY IN AN ENGAGING SERIES!!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and Sirens and Leviathans was even better!

The world is run by a triumvirate of goddesses after it has been all but destroyed by the hubris of humanity. Trying to put everything back together again and keep it running with some level of fairness and mercy, these goddesses struggle to keep the Titans of old out of power and the globe healthy and happy.

This book revolves around Amphitrite and her quest to return the world oceans to health while training a newly- emerged god of the ocean.

If you love mythology, power struggles, strong characters, tasteful romance, and amazing character development, this is the book for you. Start with the first book or jump in on this one. These books are great stand-alones or an engaging series. The point is...Don't miss this! You will love it!
