The Wheels of Cady Grey

Rate this book
Cady Grey is invisible. One of the 'perks' of being in a wheelchair.

Sometimes it's better that way, when you're a sweary, spitty teenaged girl and all you want to do is get through sixth form in one piece. But when a sinister shell company wants to knock the school down, she's the only one who cares enough to do anything about it.

When Cady finally gives up being invisible to fight, she finds being noticed by the wrong people might get her killed.

Not all superheroes wear capes, some wear wheels.
Cady Grey is such a hero.
In a tale full of intrigue, suspense and thrills Cady rolls through all opposition to save her school from developers and corrupt politicians.
She does it with grit, determination and an unswerving loyalty to her friends.
She is an inspiration and I look forward to the sequels.

Disclosure, I know the author and I am credited as an advisor, but the author knows me well enough to know that this is an honest review and that if my opinion was different I would say so.

This is a great unusual book for adults and older teenagers alike.
Quite 'direct' and with twists and turns, its not your usual teenage novel and certainly has an interesting and strong heroine.

I'm passing the book to my neice.....
Well done Mr Arvidson.

Save your pity bombs, Cady Grey doesn't need them.

What a refreshing new take on a Y/A thriller! Cady Grey is a feisty, determined, young woman who smokes hand-rolled cigarettes and swears like a sailor. Oh, and she also happens to be in a wheelchair. The love and understanding Arvidson has for his protagonist, her friends, and her world, shines through on every page.

This fast-paced romp takes readers into the world of Cady's school and her unforgettable circle of friends. But it's not all fun and games--there's a mystery to solve! With a shocking announcement, Cady and her pals learn their special school is about to be closed and torn down. Cady smells a rat and sets out to discover the dangerous truth.

Cady's is a perspective that we seldom get to see in fiction and I hope we see more of her, Daisy, Ed, and the whole gang. The Wheels of Cady Grey is a perfect blend of gritty, witty, thrilling and fun.

Cady Grey attends a school for students with special needs which is suddenly slated for demolition in order to make way for a new hospital wing. Cady, we learn, is a SWAN, which stands for syndrome without a name. She requires a wheelchair and tube feeds the majority of her meals. No pity for her, though, as Cady is superbly able to manage. She and her friends in form 6 determine to investigate the sudden and hasty attempts to bulldoze their school. As Cady, with the help of Ed, Daisy, and the rest of form 6 students pit their wits against corrupt officials with ugly ulterior motives and shady businessmen, they risk life and limb. The story has it all: high-speed chases, a spooky executioner, a mysterious benefactor, small and large fires, guns and knives, and very, very tight escapes. A hard nut to crack and put into action for a regular gang of teens, but this group battles with handicaps that, at first glance, seem insurmountable as each one of them deals with a severe physical or mental disability.

This is a most unusual read, likely with huge appeal to older teens and young adults. I struggled a bit with some terminology (it's British, and I'm not…) and also think that some proofreading might have been a good idea, but I really enjoyed the story in spite of my advanced age…

Thank you to BookSirens and the author for granting me an ARC of this novel, which allowed me to submit a voluntary review.

I loved the characters and the story in this book. All of the major characters are deemed "special needs". However, there doesn't seem to be anything "special needed" when it comes to their ability to ferret out what is going on with their school. They are determined, brave, and inventive when it comes to investigating the potential loss of their school. Cady is, of course, my favorite character. She is bound and determined not to let her diagnosis define her or limit her. She has adjusted, for the most part, to her life in a wheelchair, but she has lost none of the snarky, sarcastic ways of interacting with people that is typical of teenagers. I really enjoyed the relationship between Cady and her dad, even if it did feel a bit more "liberal" in terms of her accountability to him than seems realistic. I highly recommend this book and would love to discover it is part of a series.

And in case anyone wonders why only 4 stars if I enjoyed the book so much; while the story and characters are awesome, the execution leaves much to be desired. I won't go into details, but consider yourself forewarned.

I received a review copy from BookSirens and this is my honest opinion.

Cady Grey is a 17-year-old in a wheelchair attending high school. This is a high school for disabled students. However, when someone in the town decides to shut down the school, Cady and her unique friends rush to the rescue! Rare in the sense that this book does not promote pity or sadness, but rather a strength of character and a willingness to be part of life. The performance reflected the personality of each character and moved the story along at a quick pace. This book was provided in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

What a ride, this wheelchair whodunnit!

Quite a quick paced story with lots of banter by the witty characters, it took me a few chapters to get into it, but by then I was hooked.

I thoroughly enjoyed their pranks and friendship. And appreciate the author putting those with a disability or chronic disease, syndrome, whatever down as human beings first - without getting into the details of what might be wrong with them.

At 61% I found out this book is only the first in this series. Bring it on :)

Thanks to Booksirens for a copy of the book.
