What a pleasant surprise! About halfway through When the Silence Breaks, I was expecting this to be a solid four-star read. By the end, however, the steadily building suspense had completely won me over and moved this firmly into five-star territory.
I loved Sarah and Ryder as the main characters. Watching them gradually learn to trust one another was one of my favorite aspects of the story. Their developing relationship felt natural and never rushed. I prefer my romantic suspense heavier on the suspense and lighter on the romance, and Elizabeth Goddard struck exactly the right balance for me. The romance was never intense or overpowering; the suspense certainly was.
The rugged outdoor setting added another wonderful layer to the story. The environment itself contributes to the challenges facing the characters and creates an atmosphere that complements the danger and suspense beautifully.
I especially appreciated the faith element. Sarah and Ryder are comfortable in their faith almost as naturally as breathing. When circumstances call for it, they pray for God’s guidance and protection. Their prayers felt genuine and familiar to me, yet the story never became preachy. Faith is simply an authentic part of these characters’ lives.
The audiobook narration was also excellent. The narrator had a very pleasant voice with wonderful cadence and inflection and added another dimension to the story. Even if audio were not my usual way of experiencing books, I would still choose the audiobook edition of this one.
I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of Sarah and Ryder!
Highly recommended for readers who enjoy Christian suspense, lighter romance, wilderness settings, clean fiction, strong suspense, and faith that is woven naturally into the characters’ everyday lives.

When the Silence Breaks impressively launches the author's thrilling Mercy Ridge series. The brilliantly plotted storyline, with impactful revelations and well-timed twists, captured my interest from the very beginning and, along with endearing, expertly crafted characters, kept me reading expectantly to the very end. The atmospheric Cascade Mountains setting took on a life of its own immersing me in the action and high-stakes danger. Ryder and Sarah's dangerous mission to uncover the secrets hidden on Blackspire Mountain forces them to rely on each other, sparking a tender, slow-growing romance that touched my heart. I totally enjoyed this romantic suspense read and highly recommend it. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

When the Silence Breaks is the first book in the Mercy Ridge series. I really enjoyed this one. This is the second book that I have read recently that is full of action and twists. Sarah is former CIA and is determined to figure out why her brother was murdered and what he was seeking in the mountains. She hires ex-Navy Seal, Ryder to guide her up the mountain. While the attraction between the couple, the romance didn't dominate the book. In the end, it felt natural and I loved where it was left off. The mystery was wild and not what I was expecting. There were times I felt like I was sitting on the edge of my seat. This one would make a great movie. I highly recommend it and can't wait for the next book in the series.

What a book to unpack. Plane crash from WW2 days. Secrets overload. Murder. Betrayal. In all the craziness of those highly action packed book Mrs Goddard brings the faith into major play. She always knows how to deliver a high stakes action book with just the right amount of romance coupled with faith.
We have some major surprises in here I won’t spoil but you’ll be like me saying, “Oooh wow yes I did not see that one coming!” What an a great start to Mercy Ridge series.

Still trying to wrap my brain around all the twists in this story! When the Silence Breaks kicks off a brand new series for Elizabeth Goddard set in Mercy Ridge, WA. Former CIA Sarah Ellison is on a mission to find out why her brother was murdered with only a few clues and her grandfather’s deathbed confession to go on. She researched and hand-picked former Navy SEAL Ryder Goodwin to be her guide, but first she has to convince him to take the risk.
The story plunges right into the action with a pursuit and a mudslide, and it never lets up. It did take me a minute to settle in to the story, I think maybe because there’s just so many secrets, plus I think I feel that way a lot with all new characters and a new place. But it didn’t take me too long to become invested in not only Sarah and Ryder’s fantastic chemistry, but in unpacking all the facets of this mystery. I was shocked so many times! I feel like because I read so much suspense I can sometimes “call” things, but not this time. I can think of three or four moments where my jaw dropped, followed with a “wait… what!?!” Sneaky, letting us assume some things only to flip it on us. If I had time, I’d love to go back and reread to see if I could pick up on some things, knowing the ending.
The romance is so sweet, definitely super slow burn but it felt so real and organic with these strangers thrown into the fire together, learning to trust each other. I hope we get glimpses into their future as the future books introduce us to Ryder’s siblings.
Elizabeth Goddard keeps getting better and better at crafting these high stakes suspense stories, and I’m here for it.

I’ve been reading Elizabeth Goddard for so long I can’t even remember when I started, and she just keeps getting better. *When the Silence Breaks* is her most layered, compelling story yet — truly more layers than an onion, each one revealing something new and unexpected.
This book is filled with multiple mysteries, and you never get the chance to figure anything out early. The truth stays just out of reach as each thread slowly unravels. Every time a clue surfaces, it only deepens the questions. It’s a steady, deliberate build that keeps you fully engaged.
The danger in this story sits above everything else — heavier than the suspense, sharper than the tension, and overwhelming to both Sarah and Ryder. They’re pushed to their limits again and again, and that intensity drives the story forward in a way that feels both gripping and deeply personal. This is a modern‑day plot, yet the history woven through it is so vivid you can feel it pressing into the present.
The romance is perfectly balanced. Sarah and Ryder are exactly right for each other once they finally let go of their hidden secrets, and their connection adds warmth without ever softening the stakes.
What touched me most was the faith and healing threaded through the danger. The threats are real, the fear is real, and yet God’s presence is unmistakable — bigger than the silence, bigger than the past, and always working.
This is Elizabeth Goddard at her absolute best. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

I expected lots of action and suspense (it was sadly very cliche and tepid), a more capable female lead (she only ever acted like a trained professional at the beginning of the book. For the rest of the story she genuinely made choices that were in contradiction to who the author kept saying she was), and more Christian themes than a handful of honorable mentions of God.
It was a very prose heavy book. Little to no enjoyable dialogue. We were mostly in the repeated thoughts of the main characters.
There was little to no emotional development between the characters over the course of the story and so the romance felt dry and unrealistic for the most part. It's probably because almost everything took place in literally a week. If the reader experienced the story spread out over a longer period of time then I believe there would have been opportunity to watch a genuine and believable emotional connection develop between the characters. As a result their devotion to each other came off as forced and I couldn't root for them as a reader.
The narration for the male voices was not convincing. She comes off too too girlie thus making it hard to be immersed during some of the male characters' parts. But her voice acting for the ladies was very well done. I believe two narrators would have been perfect for this in order to guarantee immersion.
It will never not be weird talking about men's (shirtless) bodies and how they cause a reaction in a female character in Christian fiction. What are we saying please? Could we please stop trying to copy the world. We may be in it but we live by a very different system. We are supposed to be an example to others, not to do exactly the things that God is trying to save them from. Imagine if when Peter and the other disciples were going fishing and because they were shirtless if the Bible suddenly started talking about how they had rippling muscles and a six pack and about how it caused the women to blush and find it hard to look away. Come on Christian authors. Please stop this.

If the world building was done right, more emotional connection was established between characters, and if the FL was written in a way that someone of her training would conduct themselves, then I believe I would have enjoyed it more.

Ryder is trying to recover from the loss of his father and the guilt that has haunted him since. Emotionally closed off, he has refused to work as a guide until circumstances force him and Sarah to face their fears together on a dangerous mountain climb.
The story begins at a slow pace but gains momentum and intensity after the midway point. The sluggish start made it hard for me to connect right away, yet once the danger kicked in, I was hooked. The danger and tension becomes relentless, and every chapter reveals another shocking truth.

Sarah hires Ryder to guide her through the unforgiving wilderness on her quest for the truth, but they quickly find themselves facing relentless danger at every single turn—whether from treacherous weather, wild animals, or hostile humans. The mountain itself felt like its own living, breathing character, which I absolutely loved!

If you're looking for a great suspenseful read that will keep you turning pages, asking questions, calculating guesses and recalculating what's going to happen and the whodunnit! And you might have some heart palpitations while reading...both the wondering what's going to happen, and the happy butterfly ones due to a love story. It's all a great adventure and starts off with quite the opening! Sarah is searching for answers to her brother's murder and finds herself being tailed and is trying to run away and hide. Wowsers! Hold on tight because it just keeps going full speed ahead with this one! Enter Ryder Goodwin and a whole other layer to the story is added in. And I was here for it!
I had some guesses as to who the bad guy might be and I am happy to say that I guessed some and lost on others. Hopefully that's not too spoilery in saying there's more than one bad guy. But you know, when there's a team, you know there's more than one! Hahaha!
It was so interesting reading further and further into the story and discovering the reasoning behind everything. But seriously it can get a little intense in some moments. Make sure you're wearing a warm blanket because reading about them being up on the top of a mountain when the snow is up there are more is falling down, had me shivering! *Shrugs* I'm still thinking about this one and how the author pulled in history and tied it into this story. Loved it!
Grab a copy, and make sure you're ready to enjoy some fun suspense. And enjoy watching the dynamics between Sarah and Ryder, and all of the family dynamics!

I had some guesses as to who the bad guy might be and I am happy to say that I guessed some and lost on others. Hopefully that's not too spoilery in saying there's more than one bad guy. But you know, when there's a team, you know there's more than one! Hahaha!
It was so interesting reading further and further into the story and discovering the reasoning behind everything. But seriously it can get a little intense in some moments. Make sure you're wearing a warm blanket because reading about them being up on the top of a mountain when the snow is up there are more is falling down, had me shivering! *Shrugs* I'm still thinking about this one and how the author pulled in history and tied it into this story. Loved it!
Grab a copy, and make sure you're ready to enjoy some fun suspense. And enjoy watching the dynamics between Sarah and Ryder, and all of the family dynamics!

When the Silence Breaks was a great start to a promising new suspense series. The opening scenes also set you in the dead center of the mystery and suspense.
Ryder and Sarah meet when Ryder helps Sarah in a mud slide and the rescue does not end there. With a few nail-biting moments and secrets some want to keep buried and others want to reveal, the twist and turns and danger zone do not end.
I loved that this book included Sarah’s CIA past and gives readers more than one character you do not know if you have to trust or run away from. The twists at the end I did not expect and caught me by surprise. The emotions of Sarah with this reveal felt real and spot on.
Looking forward to the rest of the series.

When the Silence Breaks is Christian romantic suspense that opens the Mercy Ridge series. Set in the Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest, the fictional Mercy Ridge is a sleepy town threatened by deadly secrets. In this first installment, former CIA analyst Sarah Ellison is on the hunt for a decades-buried government secret somewhere in the Cascades, where she hopes to find answers about the recent murder of her brother. After much cajoling on her part, she teams up with Ryder Goodwin, a wilderness guide and former Navy SEAL, to dig up the mountain’s secrets before the people who are responsible for her brother’s death can get their hands on whatever it is they seek.
The premise here, especially as we get further into the plot, felt fresh and original. It was very fast-paced, with high stakes and a lot of tension. The characters were compelling without becoming irritating, and the romance struck just the right balance, present enough to be satisfying and engaging without crossing the line into cringy and unbelievable in the dire circumstances in which our characters found themselves. There were plenty of twists and turns, all housed within a vividly drawn setting that felt solid and real. There is a faith element, but it was very light, to the point that it could be easily skimmed over. Goddard’s writing is solid; there was never anything about her prose that irritated me or threw me out of the story.
Overall, that’s how I would describe When the Silence Breaks: solid. It was propulsive and well-crafted, an excellent start to a new series. And, even though this is indeed part of a series, it is also self-contained enough to be treated as a standalone should you so choose, with no real cliffhanger to compel a reader to continue the series should they not wish to do so. But if you’re a fan of Christian romantic suspense, I think you’re going to not only enjoy this book, but will look forward to each installment in the series.

This fantastic story is filled with heart-pounding danger and suspense, secrets, faith, and romance. I was hooked from the first action packed chapter to the last satisfying page. The twists!! They just kept twisting.
Sarah is guarded, intelligent, and brave. I loved how she learned to rely on someone else. I loved her determination to see her “mission” through. Her strength was incredible. I loved seeing her come to trust Ryder fully. I loved the connection they found and their vulnerable moments. Ryder is adept, protective, and intuitive. I loved how he took all of the surprises and secret revelations in stride. I loved his strength of character. I loved that he didn’t push Sarah to reveal her secrets but supported and protected her until she was ready to reveal them. I loved how he dealt with his “mistakes”and perceived failures. I enjoyed his relationship with Holt (and I am excited for his story in 2027). Sarah and Ryder had great chemistry and their romance was authentic to their situation. I loved those last few chapters!!

Atmospheric start to the series! I could envision the mountains and feel the cold.

There was plenty of danger and suspense throughout the story, and I eventually gave up trying to figure out who was behind everything. The twists toward the end genuinely surprised me, which I always appreciate in a suspense novel. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the story had another surprise waiting.
I also appreciated that this is a self-contained story, so there’s no cliffhanger leaving you hanging for the next book. While I’m definitely looking forward to more from the Mercy Ridge series, I was completely satisfied with how Sarah and Ryder’s story wrapped up.

Elizabeth Goddard’s When the Silence Breaks takes readers on a wild hike through the Cascades! In this first book in Ms. Goddard’s Mercy Ridge series, Sarah Ellison travels to the town of Mercy Ridge in the middle of the Cascade Mountains in hopes of hiring former Navy SEAL Ryder Goodwin to help guide her through its mountainous terrain. In search of what? Sarah’s not quite sure. All Sarah knows for certain is that the Cascades hold the answers to her brother’s murder and will keep her family safe. Ryder gave up being a mountain guide after his father passed away. However when Sarah asks for his assistance, her lack of a reason and being constantly followed and in danger compels Ryder to guide her through the Cascades. The hike was meant to be treacherous enough, but as Sarah starts becoming more forthcoming with her reason for the hike, the people after Sarah are doing their best to make sure that she never returns.
I absolutely loved Elizabeth Goddard’s latest release When the Silence Breaks! I thought the premise of the plot was good, but I wasn’t expecting the twists that Ms. Goddard wrote into the plot—which made it a thrilling read for me! I loved meeting Ryder and Sarah! I love when the books that I read have a Faith element and When the Silence Breaks is no different. I love that Ms. Goddard wrote Sarah and Ryder to believe in God, but that they were in two slightly different places with their Faith, including the strength and struggles they had with their Faith. I loved the mysterious layers surrounding why Sarah needed to go on a dangerous, treacherous hike and that more of her story came out the more the weather got choppy and the more they were hunted by dangerous people. Knowing nothing about camping or hiking myself, I was amazed at the gear it took to go on a hike of that caliber and the types of survival necessities that exist—from food to heated necessities! After vowing to never return to the place that claimed his father’s life, he refuses to assist Sarah. However, after learning of the danger that awaits her at the top of that mountain, he has no choice but to get involved.

As a fan of Christian fiction and romantic thrillers, I was excited to learn that Elizabeth Goddard had combined the two. Not only did she open my eyes to an entirely new genre, but she managed to make me an instant fan. I cannot wait to read more books like this. Thankfully, this is just the start of her Mercy Ridge series, so there will be plenty of opportunity to do so!

The natural characters like Mercy Ridge and Blackspire were as interesting and exciting as the human element. Elizabeth Goddard’s writing is worth the hype and I can’t wait to read more.

When The Silence Breaks by Elizabeth Goddard is the first book in Her Mercy Ridge Series! This was such an amazing suspense book that hooks you from start to finish As Sarah Ellison is wanting to find out what happened to her brother Aaron on that mountain she will not stop till she finds out who killed her brother with the help of the guide Ryder Goodwin can she get the answers she needs! This was another great Book, and this Author never fails her readers! I highly recommend this book! You won't be disappointed I was given an ARC copy and this is my own honest opinion!

This is the 1st book in the author's new Mercy Ridge series and I can't wait to read more! This was such a great book!
Sarah Ellison is determined to find out what really happened to her brother and protect her remaining family. She doesn't believe his death was an accident. She believes her grandfather's deathbed confession had something to do with it. Buried deep in the Cascade Mountains, there's a decades-old secret the government has been hiding. Sarah heads there to learn the truth. She's planning on hiring Ryder Goodwin to guide her up the mountain. But the former Navy Seal doesn't guide anymore, not since his father's tragic death. However, when he realizes Sarah's life is in danger, he knows he needs to help her. The stakes are high, and there's danger around every corner. Will they be able to navigate the mountain and unveil the truth while being pursued by her brother's killers?
This book really had it all! There was an intriguing mystery, super intense moments, action, danger, survival in the wilderness, buried secrets, and corrupt government agents. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat, and the fast pace had me quickly turning pages. This was definitely an adrenaline-pumping read! And the twists! I never saw them coming! I absolutely loved the setting of the Cascade Mountains, it really created the perfect atmosphere especially with the addition of the impending snowstorm. It was such a captivating story, I really had a hard time putting this one down. A truly immersive, compelling, gripping read that I really enjoyed and highly recommend!🩷

Elizabeth Goddard delivers another entertaining romantic suspense with When the Silence Breaks. From the opening chapters, the combination of a decades-old mystery, family secrets, and the rugged Cascade Mountain setting kept me engaged. The story blends mystery, danger, and romance well, making it difficult to stop listening.
I especially enjoyed the audiobook narration by Natalia Payne. Her performance kept the tension high during the suspenseful moments while giving each character a distinct voice. It was an enjoyable listening experience from beginning to end.
One of the reasons I continue to pick up Elizabeth Goddard’s books is her writing style. She has a way of creating engaging, faith-based suspense that balances action, heartfelt moments, and characters you want to see succeed. As someone who enjoys Christian fiction, I appreciated how the faith elements were naturally woven into the story without taking away from the suspense.
If you enjoy Christian romantic suspense with family secrets, danger in the wilderness, memorable characters, and plenty of action, this is a strong start to the Mercy Ridge series. I’m looking forward to seeing where the series goes next.

I really enjoyed this no spice Christian romantic suspense. Our heroine is searching for closure after her brother died, and it leads her to find a way up a mountain to uncover secrets from early in her grandfather‘s life. When Ryder unexpectedly saves her, it provides an opening for her to convince him to be her guide. With pain and loss in both of their pasts, this forced proximity requires them to learn to trust each other and rely on each other in the midst of the dangers of the wilderness, and with the two legged variety of danger closing in. While the romance level in this book is low, their forced proximity and precarious situations allow for protection to develop in the quick period of time that this book encompasses. I really enjoyed this book - the volcano aspect kept me on edge - and there were so many twists and turns that I did not fully predict or see coming. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

When the Silence Breaks by Elizabeth Goddard is the first book in the new Mercy Ridge series. After finishing this book, my first thoughts were, "Whew, what a ride!" It sure kept me turning pages.
Sarah Ellison makes her way to Mercy Ridge after learning that her brother was murdered in relation to a deathbed confession by her grandfather. She hopes to find out why and knows that the government buried some sort of secret in the nearby Cascade Mountains. Can She find it?
Former Navy SEAL Ryder Goodwin hasn't worked as a mountain guide for 2 years--not since his dad died in a tragic accident while he was nearby. At first, Ryder says he won't help Sarah but as she continues to face problems, he decides to go ahead and be her guide.
I enjoyed getting to know Sarah and Ryder in When the Silence Breaks. Sarah and Ryder face some obstacles before they head up the mountain. Once on the mountain, they face even bigger obstacles. I don't want to give anything away. This was a great book with several surprises that I didn't see coming. The characters learn some things about what happened in the past, what is happening now, and how to trust each other in the midst of it. There is some romance but it is a lot of high action and suspense in this book. I read it in a short time and had a hard time putting it down.
