The circulatory system is responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body. It consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. Any disturbance in its normal functioning can lead to serious health conditions known as circulatory disorders. These disorders can affect the heart, blood vessels, or blood itself.

Hypertension (High blood pressure)

  • Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is one of the most common disorders of the circulatory system.
  • Blood pressure refers to the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries.
  • Under normal circumstances, blood pressure is maintained at approximately 120/80 mm Hg.
  • However, when the blood pressure remains persistently higher than normal, the condition is known as hypertension.
  • Hypertension often develops gradually and may not produce noticeable symptoms during its early stages. For this reason, it is frequently referred to as a silent killer.
  • Several factors contribute to the development of hypertension, including excessive consumption of salty foods, obesity, lack of physical activity, emotional stress, smoking, alcohol abuse, kidney disorders, and hereditary influences.
  • Persistent high blood pressure places excessive strain on the heart and blood vessels and increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and other cardiovascular complications.
  • Therefore, regular monitoring of blood pressure is important for early diagnosis and management of this condition.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

  • Coronary artery disease is a serious circulatory disorder that occurs when the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked.
  • This narrowing usually results from the accumulation of fatty deposits, cholesterol, and other substances on the inner walls of the arteries. The process of plaque formation within the arteries is known as atherosclerosis.
  • As the coronary arteries become narrower, the blood supply to the heart muscle decreases, reducing the availability of oxygen and nutrients required for normal cardiac function.
  • Individuals suffering from coronary artery disease may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and discomfort during physical exertion.
  • The condition often develops slowly over many years and may remain unnoticed until significant blockage has occurred. If the blood supply becomes severely restricted, the heart muscle may become damaged, leading to a heart attack.

Angina Pectoris

  • Angina pectoris is a condition characterised by severe chest pain or discomfort resulting from an inadequate supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle.
  • It is not considered a disease itself but rather a symptom of underlying coronary artery disease.
  • The pain associated with angina is usually felt in the centre of the chest and may spread to the shoulders, neck, jaw, arms, or back.
  • Angina commonly occurs during physical exercise, emotional stress, heavy meals, or other situations that increase the workload of the heart.
  • Since the heart muscle receives insufficient oxygen during these periods, pain and discomfort develop.
  • Although angina is often temporary, it serves as an important warning sign that the heart is not receiving an adequate blood supply and that medical evaluation is necessary.

Heart Failure

  • Heart failure is a condition in which the heart becomes unable to pump sufficient blood to meet the metabolic demands of the body.
  • It does not mean that the heart has stopped functioning entirely; rather, it indicates that the heart's pumping efficiency has been significantly reduced.
  • Heart failure may develop as a result of prolonged hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart valve disorders, or certain infections affecting the heart.
  • As the pumping ability of the heart declines, blood may accumulate in various parts of the body, leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling of the legs and ankles, and fluid accumulation in the lungs. Heart failure is a chronic condition that requires continuous medical management.

Prevention of Circulatory System Disorders

  • Consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps maintain cardiovascular health.
  • Physical activity improves blood circulation, strengthens the heart, and reduces the risk of obesity and hypertension.
  • Avoiding tobacco products significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Maintaining an appropriate body weight reduces stress on the heart and blood vessels.
  • Stress management through relaxation techniques, meditation, and adequate sleep promotes heart health.
  • Routine monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar levels helps detect circulatory problems early.
