Watch World Cup 2026 quarter-finals as the competition heads towards a pivotal stage. Forty-eight countries have been whittled down to the final eight, and while the top four seeded teams remain, we could still be in for a few shocks over the coming four days.

Dan Burn, of course, is the long-established everyday shorthand for six feet and seven inches, or 2.01 metres, if you want to be all new age about it.

You will have noticed this when visiting car parks in Newcastle, where helpful signage tells you that vehicles exceeding 1.4 Dan Burns in height should not try to enter.

From these principles, we can calculate precisely the altitude of Miami's Hard Rock Stadium in Dan Burns, ready to be cited when England take on Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.

The thing about Miami - some would say the main thing - is that it is very much a coastal city. And the thing about Florida is that it is very much flat.

The Hard Rock Stadium is only around 114 football pitches (1,077 double-decker buses) away from the Atlantic Ocean, to boot, making it an incredibly low-lying stadium indeed.

Others point out that if you were inviting 2x Dan Burn to a wedding, you would refer to to them in conversation as 'the Burns'.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has provided an update from his hospital bed after picking up a freak injury after the Round of 16 clash against Mexico.

Despite not playing in the match, Henderson broke his left arm on the pitch after he slipped and fell awkwardly while hopping over an advertising board.

While the rest of his teammates flew on to Miami in high spirits following the hard-fought win over Mexico, Henderson remained in Mexico City in hospital.

Henderson out of surgery in American hospital

The midfielder has since been relocated to Kansas City orthopaedic institute, where he has undergone surgery.

That operation was a success, with Henderson now recovering and ready to cheer on his teammates for the rest of the tournament.

In a post on his Instagram account, he posed with a big thumbs up beside the three surgeons who carried out the procedure, Dr. Kenneth P. Unruh, Dr. Mark J Winston and Dr. Kirk McCullough.

He wrote: "Surgery done! Let's get ready for the big one Saturday.

"Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas city orthopaedic institute. Especially the 3 surgeons who carried out the operation."

Henderson will now have a watching brief for the remainder of the competition, having been ruled out for the quarter-finals and beyond, should England get past Norway.

While he will be undoubtedly gutted not to be able to finish the tournament, his appearance in England's 2-0 Group L victory against Panama meant he became the only England men's player to represent the Three Lions at seven different major tournaments.

He made his first tournament appearance for his nation at Euro 2012 but didn't score his first England goal until Euro 2020, when he contributed to the 4-0 quarter-final victory over Ukraine.

Henderson will join up with the squad again once he's out of hospital, with his father Brian telling the Daily Mail: "He won't be leaving his team-mates. He'll be there until it's finished.”

Brian also revealed that the injury was worse than the broken wrist, which was first reported, stating: "It's his left forearm - he's just completely smashed it."

It's starting to become a bit of ritual for England at the 2026 World Cup - standing with their fans after a victory and singing Oasis classic Wonderwall.

The fans already have Three Lions and Sweet Caroline as their terrace anthems, but this tournament, they're using the Britpop ballad to celebrate their successes instead.

But why is this happening now, and how did it start?

A new song for a new generation of fans

It first happened after England's 4-2 win over Croatia, with teams at the tournament asked to provide songs for certain moments in matches, including pre-match warm-up songs, goal music and post-match singalongs.

Wonderwall was one of their post-match choices and as it began playing over the stadium's PA system in Dallas, Texas, the fans and players joined in with one another, and from there, the tradition seems to have been born.

Why it has struck such a chord with the fans and players is anyone's guess.

However, there's a certain poignancy to the lyrics that seems to fit the theme of the tournament, with the road England are currently walking towards the final a "winding" one, as they try and claim a first international trophy since 1966, while the long, hopeful "maybe" in the chorus speaks to the possibility that this could finally be England's year.

And let's be honest, who doesn't want to shout: "I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now" at Big Dan Burn after his heroics at the Azteca?

Either way, the phenomenon has grown so much that Liam Gallagher himself has (sort of) pledged that he will sing it on the pitch at the final, should England get there.

There was a 306% spike in Wonderwall's streaming numbers in the UK immediately after the win against Mexico on Monday morning. Across the full 24-hour period, the song racked up 200,441 streams, which was an 18% overall daily increase.

Other England songs have benefited from this year's tournament progress too, with Three Lions, Vindaloo, World in Motion and We're on the Ball among several songs to have seen big spikes in their streaming numbers following England victories.

The new tradition is good news and bad news for Liam Gallagher and his brother, Noel, with it translating into more royalty checks for the band. However, Noel Gallagher has admitted in several interviews that he doesn't support England.

"I'm not an England fan," he told TalkSPORT. "When I was growing up it was all Liverpool and United players. I couldn't get behind that.

"I love seeing John [Stones]. John is my mate, he's coming towards the end, and his time at City is done. He's coming towards the end of his career. It's great to see him playing well. [Marc] Guehi looks solid as he always does."

Sadly, however, it seems that fans are still almost completely ignoring Neil and Christine Hamilton's 2006 attempt England are Jolly Dee. I can't think why.

Lionel Messi turned 39 this summer, but shows no signs of slowing down as he continues to impress in the twilight of his career.

Currently playing at his sixth World Cup, having made his tournament debut back in 2006, he could be on course to win it back-to-back, while also potentially claiming the golden boot.

And that's barely even the tip of the iceberg of Messi's astonishing career, in which he has shone both at club and international level.

Messi has won 46 trophies during a glittering career

Lionel Messi was born in Rosario, Santa Fe Province, Argentina on June 24, 1987.

After starting out at Argentine club Newell's Old Boys, he moved to Barcelona aged 14 after his father convinced then first-team director Carles Rexach to write a contract on a napkin.

It would prove to be an inspired move, with Messi staying at the Catalan giants for 21 years in total, becoming their all-time top goalscorer, winning 10 La Liga trophies, seven Copa del Rey, seven Supercopa de Espana, four Champions Leagues, three UEFA Super Cups and three club world cups.

He finally left the Camp Nou in 2021, when he joined French giants PSG, where he claimed three trophies, including two league titles and a Trophee des Champions.

However, after two seasons, he moved again to Inter Miami where he has guided them to an MLS Cup, a Supporters' Shield and a Leagues Cup, scoring 90 goals and providing 51 assists in 104 matches.

In his later years, it has been his international exploits that have made headlines more than his club football.

In the last five years, he has picked up four international trophies, including the 2022 World Cup, two Copa Americas and a Finalissima, although some people don't count the latter as a particularly noteworthy cup.

As an individual he is the most decorated player of all time and has won the Ballon D'or a record eight times, including four years in a row from 2009-2021.

He could claim a second World Cup this summer, with Argentina in the quarter finals of the 2026 North American tournament.

He's currently the top scorer too, with eight goals from five games.

At 7.05pm on July 11, 2018 moisture filled the air across England, and it wasn’t low pressure from the North Atlantic sweeping in to ruin yet another English summer.

No, Kieran Trippier had just scored a freekick to put England in front vs Croatia in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and large portions of the 26.6 million people watching indulged in a new craze sweeping the nation: pint chucking.

I was watching in Central London at Flat Iron Square, arguably the birthplace of the football pint chuck. The casual food and drink venue was transformed into a World Cup bearpit during the summer of 2018, and it was absolutely fantastic.

The setup was perfect: space, food stalls, transport links, multiple bars, multiple screens, including a giant one in front of an open-air space that allowed for maximum orbit when launching your pint.

But why would anyone launch a full pint? Especially in London, where the price continues to creep worryingly away from £5, and closer to 10.

The day before England played Panama in their second group game at World Cup 2018 a heatwave hit Britain. Average temperatures were the highest on record.

Technology was advancing at breakneck speed: the concept of high definition had leapt from the living room to the outdoor screen, meaning you could visit a fan park and watch football on a giant screen, with audible commentary, and the picture didn’t resemble EA Sports FIFA ‘98 Road To The World Cup.

Promoters and venues took advantage of this. Little did they know they would hit upon a business model where people would pay in, pay for drinks, throw them in the air, then promptly order more.

Plastic glasses have always been a thing, but they play an important role in the phenomenon of England game pint chucking. Watching football en masse necessitates the plastic glass, for obvious reasons.

Still with me? Just a few more factors to run through.

Social media. Images and footage of fans throwing pints during Russia 2018 went viral. They were in the news, on Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp groups were full of them. The England team's official social media account shared them. England players in Russia were shown them.

Fans around the country who were gathered in similar Fan Parks wanted in on the fun. When England scored at the 2018 World Cup and you were watching at a busy Fan Park, the thought crossed your mind: “Harry Kane could see this”. Before you knew it, you were drenched in Heineken.

To recap the formula: hot weather, high definition big screens, the safety net of plastic glass, social media. Now for the secret ingredient: euphoria.

Prior to England’s 2018 World Cup run, there hadn’t been anything worth chucking a pint in the air for when watching the Three Lions at a major tournament.

Maybe Daniel Sturridge’s injury-time winner vs Wales at Euro 2016 (but Gareth Bale and co very much had the last laugh that summer), Raheem Sterling ‘scoring’ at Brazil 2014? (Replays showed he hit the side netting). There was nothing good to pint lob over at Euro 2012, or South Africa 2010. In 2008, England didn’t qualify; Germany 2006 was a huge let-down. You have to go back to a pre-social media era to find a moment at a summer football tournament worth losing a pint over.

Not much can match the euphoria of celebrating an important England goal, knowing most of the country is doing the same thing. Add in friends, family and balding strangers, and you can really lose control. When it happens, you hold on until the tremors stop. You need both hands. A cup of liquid is the last thing you need. It had to go, and in the summer of 2018, it did. High, with pride.

Kieran Trippier, over the wall

By the 2018 semi-final, people were showing up to fan parks in those disposable waterproof ponchos, such was the volume of aerial lager. Looking back at footage of fans celebrating Kieran Trippier’s early semi-final goal, it doesn't look real. It feels staged.

But it was very real. It's comical how many plastic cups fill the air. But that was the new norm, the cameras were ready, pointing at the crowd for that exact moment. It was wet and wild – a new craze was born.

No other fan base chucks fans like England. A strange thing to type. But like it or not, pint chucking is officially ‘a thing’.

Gianni Infantino is having a summer to remember, jetting back and forth across North America, attending as many World Cup matches as possible.

From Miami to Mexico City, Atalanta to Vancouver and everywhere else in between, he's visited each of the 16 stadiums at this summer's tournament on his personal odyssey at least once.

With the competition taking its first break today since its opening fixture four weeks ago, now seems like a good moment to count up his World Cup appearances.

Infantino has flown more than 43,000 miles so far this summer

Overall, Gianni has been spotted at a total of 37 of the 96 matches that have taken part so far, or 38.5 per cent.

On board his private executive jet, he has been cruising from place to place, taking in as much of the tournament as he can, even attending multiple games on the same day in some cases.

For instance, on June 23 he was spotted at England's goalless draw with Ghana in Boston before jetting up to Canada for Panama vs Croatia later in the same day. He has done this on several occasions as well.

His travel is taking place on a Gulfstream G650ER jet, which has been provided to him by Qatar Airways, one of the competition's official sponsors, according to UOL, who have tracked Gianni's movements this summer.

Some reports claim he prefers to sleep on board the aircraft, rather than in a hotel.

The jet has also been adapted to include an office, so Gianni can spend as much time working, sleeping and travelling in the same place.

According to the BBC, Infantino's carbon footprint over the first two weeks of the competition was equivalent to 78 people on average for a whole year.

The trips are meticulously planned for Gianni, with FIFA confirming that they pay all of his travel expenses on his North American summer tour.

He has been to an average of 1.37 matches per day since the tournament started.

With no more multiple match days remaining, it's entirely possible that we see Infantino at all of the remaining eight matches which would take his tournament total up to an incredible 45 – 43.27% of the 104 games.

The Gunners are looking to bolster their side ahead of next season, with midfield an area in need of upgrades.

Aston Villa could be forced to sell their top asset this summer

The Athletic has claimed that Rogers is Arsenal's priority and that Villa could be persuaded to sell arguably their best player by financial regulations.

After exceeding their UEFA loss limit, Villa had to enter into a settlement agreement, which could lead to some strict punishments if terms are not met.

While Villa's preference is that Rogers stays and plays for them next season, selling him could remove any worries over future problems caused by finances.

One such punishment could be a ban from European competitions, so Villa see it as vital that they stick to the rules.

With Rogers valued at higher than the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson this summer, a sale would bring in a substantial, potentially transformative, fee.

Arsenal are also monitoring the situation of Paris Saint Germain's Bradley Barcola, but he would also set them back north of £100m.

Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes is another player the Gunners are keen on signing, but have been told that the player is not available this summer following the sale of Sandro Tonali to Spurs.

Arsenal's need for a midfielder stems from an over-reliance on the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi last season.

Injuries to squad players like Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard and Mikel Arteta's reluctance to use the likes of Christian Norgaard mean reinforcements are needed if they are to compete for extra silverware while also defending their league title.

They have also recently struck a deal for goalkeeper Illan Meslier as a free agent.

Manchester United remain undeterred in their pursuit of Bournemouth's Alex Scott, despite being told he isn't for sale.

The 22-year-old has attracted interest from across the Premier League, with Arsenal and Manchester City both also expressing an interest.

However, the Cherries are determined to hold onto their midfielder, stating he is not for sale, and hoping he will sign a new deal.

Man United encouraged by Scott not signing a new contract

Currently, Scott is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal with reports claiming he has even gone as far as to reject Bournemouth's offer, and Manchester United are pushing ahead with their attempts to sign him, according to The Sun.

Whether or not he leaves this summer remains to be seen, but with two years left on his current contract, it may be better for the Cherries to cash in on their asset now, rather than let him leave for cheaper, or possibly even as a free transfer, later down the line.

The Red Devils are still searching for a marquee midfield signing, after Elliot Anderson opted to join rivals Man City and Mateus Fernandes chose to sign for Spurs.

They have seemingly already tied up a deal for Atalanta's Brazil international, although complications around his medical seem to be delaying that signing, accord to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Yet, with the added demands of European football to contend with next season, Carrick wants a deeper squad than he currently has at his disposal.

Uruguayan Manuel Ugarte ruptured his ACL during his nation's World Cup campaign, increasing the need for squad depth.

Some reports suggest that an offer around the £80m mark would be enough to convince Bournemouth to sell after he turned down the new deal.

While that hasn't put Manchester Untied off, they are also assessing their options to see if there's better value elsewhere.

Brighton's Carlos Baleba and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni are also being considered.

After storms delayed kick off for England ahead of their Round of 16 tie against Mexico, weather could now affect their Quarter Final.

Heat warnings, storms and lightning are all forecast between now and Saturday's 10pm UK time kick off.

Hurricane season also runs in Florida from June until November, although that is not expected to be a problem until later in the year.

Lightning forecast in Miami for day of England match against Norway

England face a dangerous looking Norway side in their quarter final tie on Saturday for a place in the World Cup semi-final.

However, their progress could be halted by another adversary, the weather.

Lightning is currently forecast for the day of the match in Miami, although it is expected a couple of hours before kick off.

By the time the teams take to the field, current forecasts have the storms to have passed, leaving nothing but sunny skies for the start of the match.

Nevertheless, any lightning strikes within eight miles of the Hard Rock Stadium would trigger a shelter-in-place order and would lead to delays.

Clear skies wouldn't mean great conditions for football either, with temperatures of 33C, with a real feel of 44C and 59 per cent humidity, expected to produce an energy sapping atmosphere.

Heat alerts have been issued for days approaching the game.

There is every chance that the forecast will shift between now and Saturday, but either way, it is at least going to be hot and sticky for the players.

Fans will just have to wait and see what happens on the day.

What is good news for England at least is that they're playing opponents from one of the only countries that is colder than the UK, so both will likely struggle just as much as each other.

Erling Haaland: Yorkshire's finest

You didn't need to be the world's greatest vexillologist to pick up the clue as to Haaland's nationality, given his shirt for most of the tournament has been a blue and white cross on a red background. And also that it says 'Norway' on the screen.

But Haaland was not actually born in Norway, as thousands of Leeds United fans can boringly attest at tedious length.

That's because little baby Erling was in fact born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, thanks to his father's own football career.

Norway international Alf-Inge Haaland moved to Nottingham Forest in 1993 before moving on to Leeds United in summer 1997.

The elder Haaland would leave for Manchester City in June 2000, just over month before Erling was born on July 21.

However, Alf-Inge retired in 2003 after suffering a serious knee injury, which led to legal action being initiated against Roy Keane before being dropped.

And so, the Haaland family returned to Norway when Erling was just three years old, and he spent the rest of his childhood there before moving to Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg aged 18.

By then, Erling had made his name as one of Europe's most promising strikers for his teenage exploits with Norwegian sides Bryne and Molde.

A move from Salzburg to German giants Borussia Dortmund followed in 2020, with Manchester City swooping for his signature two years later.

Haaland would technically have been eligible to play for England as a result, as he would have been considered a UK citizen; but he has never held a UK passport, without which he would be unlikely to have been able to prove his eligibility to FIFA.

He was never really interested in playing for England, in any case.

England are currently set to be a man light in the upcoming World Cup quarter-final meeting with Norway.

That’s because in the dramatic clash at the Azteca with Mexico, Jarell Quansah was sent off for a high challenge against Jesus Gallardo.

The Three Lions went on to win the game 3-2 and progressed to the next round, but have lost yet another full-back.

Could Jarell Quansah’s red card be overturned?

That’s a problem for Thomas Tuchel, who opted to leave Trent Alexander-Arnold at home, and lost Reece James and Tino Livramento to injury, which leaves just Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa at his disposal with any significant right-back experience, the latter likely needed in central defence.

But could Donald Trump have opened the way to a solution?

The US president controversially intervened in USMNT striker Folarin Balogun’s Round of 16 suspension with a phone call to FIFA supremo Gianni Infantino, managing to get the one-match ban suspended for 12 months utilising a clause never before used at the World Cup.

It drew much criticism globally – including from UEFA and the Belgian FA, with the Red Devils winning the following match in any case – but it also opened the floodgates to further such appeals.

Based on various reports, the Football Association (FA) are considering an appeal to Quansah’s red card.

Whether such an appeal would be successful, and whether it would go through in time to allow Quansah to play against Norway, seems questionable.

France are also said to be considering an appeal for Michael Olise’s yellow card in their game against Paraguay, which is likely to fix FIFA’s gaze upon the can of worms they’ve opened.

In FourFourTwo’s opinion, the most likely course of action seems to be that the governing body will do all they can to close those floodgates, to avoid post-match headaches after every game.

They will no doubt take flak for that call, but it will likely be short-term pain for long-term gain, and the best route out of the sticky situation they’ve got themselves into.

Clearly, a la Balogun, having the ban overturned is not impossible, but Quansah’s challenge was probably a little heavier. Additionally, England don’t have the pulling power of hosts the United States, and FIFA will likely be keen to curtail what they started.

Aston Villa are set to receive a financial boost from FIFA following the World Cup.

The Villans have had a number of representatives across the pond, with Ollie Watkins still fighting for glory with England, and others like John McGinn bowing out earlier, at the group stage.

But one of the Midlands club's stars has had a much more difficult personal experience at the tournament.

Aston Villa to receive Amadou Onana compensation

Villa midfielder Amadou Onana was forced off the pitch in the first half of Belgium's win against the United States, where he partners fellow Villa man Youri Tielemans in midfield.

He was later seen on crutches with a brace around his knee, for what transpired to be an ACL injury.

Any follower of football will know that means Onana will miss most, if not all, of next season, and Unai Emery will therefore need to come up with a contingency.

Thankfully, however, it shouldn't leave the club too out of pocket in terms of wages for a player they can't use, as FIFA will pay his salary up to a maximum of £4.68m through their Club Benefits Programme.

Transfer guru David Ornstein has reported that the developing situation is set to take Villa into the market though.

They spent the second half of last season dealing with another ACL injury for Boubacar Kamara, and while heading for a return in pre-season, he will need to be eased back.

According to Ornstein, it wasn't previously a position they were looking to bolster.

Onana played 38 times for Villa last term, including 12 in the Europa League.

Having finished fourth in the Premier League last term, they now have an even more demanding Champions League campaign to think about.

In FourFourTwo's opinion, with Onana being such a crucial cog in Villa's midfield, a significant portion of their summer budget may need to be spent here.

The BBC have made a surprising decision with regards to their coverage of the World Cup as the competition builds to a dramatic conclusion.

UK audiences have been tuning in to the licence-fee-funded broadcaster and rival ITV to watch the 104 matches of this summer’s competition, with the rights split across the two.

This naturally opens up the pair to comparison as they are essentially charged with providing the same product – and there has been one clear difference throughout: location.

BBC’s World Cup coverage to remain UK-based until the semis

Fans tuning in to one of many ITV-broadcasted matches from the start of the pre-match build-up have been greeted immediately by the channel’s breathtaking backdrop of the New York skyline, visible from the temporary studio built on a rooftop in Brooklyn.

It’s a stark contrast to the BBC, who are holding their own in terms of pundits – Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Joe Hart among their regulars – but not in aesthetics and authentic feel, settling for a digital background image of New York, with the programme delivered from their studio in Salford.

Many had believed the BBC may eventually fly out for the knockouts, but that changeover has been and gone, with the quarter-finals now beckoning.

Now, it’s been revealed that the national broadcaster will not head Stateside until the semis.

That means they’ll spend less than a week of the tournament in the United States, with the first semi-final between France or Morocco and Spain or Belgium to be on Tuesday 14 July with an 8pm BST start.

However, with the BBC still not out there, delaying until the last four does make some sense, as they only have the rights to one of the three quarter-final clashes, when Spain meet Belgium. ITV are lined up to show the other three, including Norway vs England.

BBC have the first pick for the semi-finals, so will choose England if the Three Lions make it, with the current plans ensuring they’ll be on the ground for that game.

The decision to provide most of their coverage from Salford is said to have been one made on a cost-saving basis, with the BBC funded by taxpayers through the licence fee.

Star presenter Mark Chapman will travel earlier to host England’s meeting with Norway for radio station 5 Live, and Gabby Logan will present the final in New York – the first woman to do so.

The BBC set a record audience for a live UK broadcast between 2am-4am for the tense clash with Mexico in the last round, so the budget-conscious decision has merits but, in FourFourTwo’s opinion, it has lacked the prestige of ITV’s offering, predominantly due to location.

Egypt superstar Mostafa Ziko has questioned FIFA's integrity after his nation endured a controversial 3-2 loss against Argentina.

The Pharaohs surged into a 2-0 lead, however, prior to their second goal, they had another ruled out by VAR intervention.

The move was stellar: a Haissem Hassan solo run, to a Mohamed Salah trivela, to a Mostafa Ziko finish, but the effort was ruled out after VAR deemed there to have been a foul in the build-up.

Mostafa Ziko slams FIFA, makes 'rigged' allegation against Lionel Messi's Argentina

Lisandro Martinez was the aggrieved party, with the referee ruling him to have been fouled prior to Ziko's strike.

Later, that same trio of Egypt stars combined again, with Ziko also adding the finishing touch, taking a 2-0 lead.

The game's controversial refereeing was not limited to merely one event, with a range of talking points emerging post-match.

First was Egypt's disallowed goal, then two separate penalty claims in the build-up to Argentina's third and winning strike, and talks of a possible red card were brought up from the game's early stages.

Another incident was a foul awarded on Leandro Paredes, inflicted by Salah, which denied the Egyptian a clean sight on goal.

Ziko discussed the match's events with BBC shortly after the whistle, and claimed: "The referee was really not fair. Not fair. The injustice was clear.

"We did a good job in the early stages of the match. There's been an unfairness right from the start... a 2-0 lead isn't enough to beat Argentina."

Through tears, Ziko stated: "This tournament has been fixed. But God is sufficient for us.

"[God is] the best disposer of affairs. He's wasting the efforts of an entire nation. The cup is being given to Argentina," he concluded.

Argentina, who were taken to the wire by Egypt and Cape Verde, will face the winner of Colombia vs Switzerland in the tournament's quarter-finals.

Argentina came back from two goals down Egypt to book their place in the quarter-finals of World Cup 2026.

It was perhaps the most climactic comeback of this summer’s edition of the tournament, with La Albiceleste’s first goal not plundered until the 79th minute, at which point Lionel Messi got involved, before Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez completed the heist.

That got us thinking about the greatest-ever World Cup comebacks – below are some of the best…

10. Belgium 3-2 Japan (2018)

In 2018, Belgium were still at the peak of their Golden Generation powers: Thibaut Courtois in net, a star-studded Premier League defence, Kevin De Bruyne in the middle, Eden Hazard out wide and Romelu Lukaku up top.

So, to go 2-0 down to Japan in the first hour was something of a red-face inducer, and it remained that way until there were only around 20 or so minutes left on the clock.

Jan Vertonghen kicked the round-of-16 comeback off, with perhaps one of the longest-range headers we’ll ever see, before Marouane Fellaini nodded in the equaliser. The fact the winner was scored deep in stoppage time by Nacer Chadli, and thanks in part to a smart Lukaku dummy, made this redemption even sweeter.

9. Argentina 3-2 Egypt (2026)

Forgive us for what could be a dose of recency bias here, but it feels like Argentina’s comeback does deserve a mention here, purely based on how late the three goals.

The game is also not harmed by Messi, who at 39 years old has still been his talismanic best, and came up trumps once again, crashing in the equaliser off the crossbar for his eighth goal of the tournament with a spectacular half-volley.

Much like Belgium, Fernandez then finished the job in stoppage time. Some more distance from this game, with the additional context of how Argentina finish this tournament, will likely determine how the match stands the test of time.

8. Portugal 5-3 Korea DPR (1966)

We’re not going to pretend we remember this game firsthand, but the story is remarkable, with it being only one of two 3+ goal comebacks in World Cup history.

The momentous game occurred at Goodison Park, where what is now known as North Korea surprisingly went three goals up in the first half an hour of the quarter-final.

Eusebio decided he was having none of it, and slammed home four goals on his own before the hour mark, with Jose Augusto capping off the spectacle.

We’re pretty sure they didn’t go on to win that year though…

7. England 3-2 Cameroon (AET) (1990)

This could have included as a Cameroon comeback in another life, the Indomitable Lions netting two after David Platt’s early opener – having stunned Argentina in the Italia 90’s first game.

It wasn’t to be, however, with crisp-loving marksman Gary Lineker on target from the spot once to send the game to extra time, and again to prevent it going to penalties.

“Before the Cameroon game, when a lot of the press were at training, I deliberately practised a penalty I wouldn’t take. And the Cameroon goalkeeper went exactly that direction!” the cunning former Barca man later said.

6. West Germany 3-2 England (AET) (1970)

A win against the defending champions is something, but coming back after they’ve gone ahead is an even greater hurdle to clear.

That’s exactly what West Germany managed, in a re-run of the final four years earlier.

They failed to win it once again despite dumping the Three Lions out in the quarter-final, but at least they had some revenge to bring home with them this time.

6. Austria 7-5 Switzerland (1954)

A 12-goal thriller is rightly remembered for the number of times the ball was in the back of the net – holding the record for the most goals scored in a World Cup finals game – but nestled in that chaos was also a top comeback.

Switzerland must have thought they had the game wrapped up with 24 minutes on the clock, with a 3-0 lead already established.

Incredibly, however, the next five goals came from Austria. Josef Hugi pulled one back for his hat-trick, making it 5-4 at the hour mark.

Austria scored twice more, meaning Swizerland’s Robert Ballaman’s final goal was merely a consolation, in game unlikely to be shifted from the history books for some time.

5. England 1-2 Brazil (2002)

Having experienced their own comeback story 12 years early, it was time for the Three Lions to taste their own medicine.

A young Michael Owen gave England the lead against a star-studded Brazil attack that, in the end, proved irrepressible.

Ronaldinho was the headline-grabber, setting up Rivaldo before converting a perhaps fortunate free-kick of his own and, as if he didn’t have the attention already, getting himself sent off seven minutes later, albeit with some controversy over the decision.

It was a vital comeback, given the Selecao memorably went on to lift the trophy that year, a feat they haven’t repeated since.

3. France 2-1 Croatia (1998)

Croatia only held the lead for a single minute in this contest, but it’s impossible not to give props to a comeback so important, with Les Bleus going on to win the trophy for the first time in their history after this semi-final victory.

Greater credit is due for the fact they held on to their Lilian Thuram-inspired lead for over 10 minutes after Laurent Blanc’s dismissal.

It’d be the second-most important meeting between these two nations, with France once again winning in the 2018 final, but was a notable feat in comeback terms.

2. Italy 4-3 West Germany (AET) (1970)

Tennis fans would have been proud of the back-and-forth in this match-up, nicknamed the Game of the Century.

Italy went one up in the first 10 minutes and weren’t answered until added time of the second half of this semi-final, where the real action started.

A total of five goals were scored in extra time, a World Cup record, with the lead changing hands like it was a hot potato.

The nature of it means this could have gone down as a comeback wherever the ref ended it, but it’s a game too juicy not to include.

1. West Germany 3-2 Hungary (1954)

Context for a comeback is everything, and occasions don’t come much bigger than a World Cup final.

Hungary went into the game heavy favourites with the firepower of Ferenc Puskas, the team having scored an average of 6.25 goals on route to the final. He netted the opener, before team-mate Zoltan Czibor made it two with eight minutes gone.

But there’s a reason this game is known as the Miracle of Bern – Max Morlock pulled one back two minutes later for West Germany, before Helmut Rahn equalised.

The goalmouth action took a break for the rest of the first half and well into the second period, when Rahn sealed what would go down as one of the game’s greatest underdog stories.

Kylian Mbappe has issued a classy response to a vile, racist rant from a Paraguayan politician.

The Frenchman, who is the among greatest World Cup players to ever perform on the stage, scored his side's only goal in a 1-0 victory against Paraguay.

That strike came in the form of a penalty, sending France to the quarter-finals where they will face Morocco, but Mbappe has been forced to respond to a racist tirade from a Paraguayan politician in the aftermath of his country's victory.

Mbappe scored his 19th career World Cup goal against Paraguay, and should have had his 20th if not for an astonishing double save from the opposition goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Paraguayan politician Madame Celeste Amarilla posted a racist tirade against Mbappe on social media, describing the France legend as a "colonised Cameroonian, desperately trying to pass himself off as French."

The politician also described him as a "brute who had not learned to write", prompting a response from the France legend.

Mbappe responded: "You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay.

"Through your... brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished.

"[You are] an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country.

"I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world," he concluded.

Amarilla's remarks were described by the French Football Federation (FFF) as "utterly abhorrent and unacceptable", and announced their intentions to file criminal charges against the politician.

"These remarks are criminal and reprehensible. They must be prosecuted here as elsewhere," said the FFF.

The FFF is reporting the matter to the public prosecutor's office with a view to legal proceedings", they continued.

Amarilla is a senator from Paraguay's Liberal Radical party, and replied to the threat of prosecution earlier today in a press conference.

The politician stated that she could also file charges against the FFF, warning the federation "don't underestimate me."

Switzerland made the last eight three times in their first four appearances at the World Cup, but have only reached the Round of 16 ever since.

Colombia, meanwhile, were quarter-finalists in 2014, although that is their best-ever finish at the World Cup.

It's unlikely to be a glamour tie, this one, but it will be contested by two competent, well-coached sides and separating them will be tough. So, who is covering the game for ITV?

The full line-up of presenters, commentators and presenters for Switzerland vs Colombia, being played this evening at 9pm BST, has been revealed.

Leading the programme is presenter Laura Woods, an experienced and popular broadcaster known for her coverage of Premier League and Champions League football.

Joining Woods in the ITV studio with the stunning Manhattan backdrop will be Duncan Ferguson, Karen Carney and Jobi McAnuff.

The ITV punditry team have clearly done their research this tournament and for this game it'll be no different.

Expect plenty of analysis on Newcastle United-linked Johan Manzambi, and debate as to whether ex-Liverpool man Luis Diaz holds the key to this match.

While Ferguson and McAnuff don't have any playing experience at a men's World Cup, Carney made 15 appearances at the tournament for England during her playing career, representing the Lionesses at four separate World Cups.

Switzerland and Colombia are preparing to play each other for the last remaining Quarter Final place at the 2026 World Cup.

The winner will face either Egypt or defending champions Argentina, with those two playing each other earlier in the day.

El Salvador official set to take charge of his third World Cup match

The final Round of 16 match will be officiated by Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton.

It will be his third game of the tournament, having previously officiated group matches between Turkey and Paraguay and Japan and Sweden.

Barton went viral during the Turkey and Paraguay match after his overly dramatic announcement of a red card for Miguel Almiron, following a VAR review.

That incident saw the official become the first to issue a red card for a player covering their mouth with their hand.

The 35-year-old is featuring in his second World Cup, having taken charge of three matches at Qatar 2022, including England's Round of 16 match against Senegal.

Barton will be joined on the pitch by two fellow Salvadorans, with David Moran and Antonio Pupiro assisting from the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Katia Itzel Garcia and Sandra Ramirez, both from Mexico, will be assuming fourth official and reserve assistant referee duties.

Barton's previous record is pretty unpredictable when it comes to dishing out cards, with only three players booked during the three World Cup matches at Qatar combined.

However, during 21 Salvadoran league matches in 2025 and 2026, Barton dished out 12 red cards and a staggering 113 yellows.

However, he has been a little less card happy during this summer's tournament, handing out just five yellows altogether in addition to Almiron's red.

Progressing beyond this stage has proved to be a major issue for Switzerland for quite some time. Eliminated in the round of 16 in 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022, they must overcome a highly impressive Colombia side that are rightfully considered by many to be dark horses in North America.

Even before a ball was kicked, many saw Los Cafeteros as a team that could go deep in the tournament. That belief has only strengthened after they topped a potentially tricky group and earned a convincing win in the last 32 against Ghana.

They’ve only conceded once across four games and, despite not being the most clinical, have created a host of chances in every match.

The most chaotic moment of Portugal’s Round of 16 match against Spain came in the 91st minute. Spain's Ferran Torres set up Mikel Merino for an added-time winner to send La Roja through to the quarterfinals, breaking millions of Portuguese hearts and ending Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of a World Cup title.

The second-most chaotic moment didn’t take place on the pitch but in the mixed zone where hundreds of journalists crowded into the basement of AT&T Stadium to get a prime viewing spot for the post-match player interviews.

Manchester City’s Rodri was first to speak, followed by his club teammate Rúben Dias as the first Portugal player to appear in front of the media. As journalists prepared for an opportunity to ask Portuguese players about their heartbreaking collapse in Texas, a bizarre exchange took place.

Rather than handing the microphone to the nearest journalist, Portugal’s press officer, Francisco Trigo de Abreu, demanded that a Portuguese journalist ask the first question. “Aren’t there any Portuguese here?” he questioned the room.

When a Brazilian journalist attempted to ask a question, Abreu questioned where he was from before taking note of his Brazilian accent. He then turned to Renata Pereira, a Brazilian who has spent the past 22 years working as a FIFA Media Officer. Pereira suggested they do a quick round of questions in Portuguese.

Abreu refused – it had to be a Portuguese journalist. Perhaps he was looking out for personal connections. In Miami, after Portugal’s draw with Colombia, he ensured that Portuguese journalists were allowed to ask Roberto Martínez the bulk of questions in the post-match press conference.

Back then, Portugal still harbored ambitions of reaching a maiden World Cup Final, and the stadium was overwhelmed by Brazilian and Colombian journalists, with Portuguese natives being crowded out amidst the noise.

Abreu eventually got his way, repeating: “Where are the Portuguese journalists?” Just as Dias was getting ready to exit, a Portuguese journalist was finally spotted, and Abreu personally handed him the microphone.

In the midst of this delay, however, Mikel Merino had arrived at an adjacent stage and stepped up to the microphone before speaking in front of the journalists in the mixed zone nearby. A logistical issue that has plagued the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Dias wouldn’t allow it. He had had enough of Merino ruining the last two months, from helping Arsenal win the Premier League title at the expense of City to knocking Portugal out of the World Cup. He wasn’t prepared to strain to discern what exactly the Portuguese journalist was saying and simply walked off the stage.

Had Abreu simply handed the microphone to the nearest journalist instead of going to extraordinary lengths to find a compatriot, Dias wouldn’t have had an issue understanding the question.

Three Spain players spoke with press before a single Portuguese player had done so. Nélson Semedo finally arrived after an hour of waiting, but he was only able to answer three questions before being whisked away by Abreu, with Cristiano Ronaldo then heading to the microphone to discuss the defeat and confirm that this was, in fact his final World Cup.

For a team that was regarded as one of the favorites going into this tournament, Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign will be regarded as a massive failure, one where their countless world-class players were never quite on the same page with one another. Nonetheless, those who receive a yellow card in either the last 32 or last 16 would get a one-match ban and miss the semi-final if they were cautioned again in the quarter-final - and several key England players are at risk of that fate, if the Three Lions beat Norway.

The four England players at risk of missing World Cup semi-final

England’s knockout wins at this World Cup have been far from straightforward, starting with the last-32 clash with DR Congo, in which Harry Kane’s late double secured a 2-1 victory and saved Thomas Tuchel’s side from a humiliating exit.

The Three Lions then put in a heroic performance against co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca, winning 3-2 thanks to two quickfire Jude Bellingham goals, Kane’s penalty and a brave rearguard action after Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half.

Quansah misses the quarter-final against Norway as a result - although the FA are considering an appeal - but four key England players would be banned for the semi-final if they are booked on Saturday and their team wins.

That list includes Azteca hero Bellingham, who was cautioned for a reckless tackle in the first half against Congo.

Also at risk is midfielder and vice-captain Declan Rice, following his yellow card for a high challenge after just 50 seconds against Mexico.

Two members of England’s first-choice defence are also on a booking: centre-back Marc Guehi, who was cautioned for protesting the decision to award Mexico a second-half penalty (not Harry Kane, as a BBC graphic incorrectly indicated during the game), and left-back Nico O’Reilly, following an off-the-ball clash with defender Jorge Sanchez moments later.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson was also yellow-carded for interfering with play as an unused substitute as Tuchel’s side defended their lead, but will miss the rest of the World Cup after suffering a freak arm injury in the post-match celebrations.

With all four players starting both of England’s knockout matches so far, Tuchel faces a delicate balancing act on Saturday.

Bellingham has been particularly impressive during the tournament, scoring four times and assisting Harry Kane’s goal against Panama, and would be a huge miss.

However, any fears over suspensions would be academic if England lose to Norway, which will surely mean Tuchel prioritises the quarter-final above resting any of his stars for a potential last-four clash in Atlanta next Wednesday.

It's not exactly revelatory information that Erling Haaland is good at putting the ball in the net.

The Manchester City star has scored at a rate in excess of four goals every five games in all competitions since moving to the Etihad Stadium in 2022, which is pretty absurd.

But even by Haaland's own ridiculous standards, his numbers for his country almost defy comprehension.

Erling Haaland's goalscoring record for Norway is even more ridiculous than you might expect

At 25 years old, Haaland is top of Norway's list of all-time leading goalscorers with 62 goals. The previous record holder, Jorgen Juve, scored 33, the last of which came in 1934.

Haaland has scored as many World Cup goals in his maiden tournament this summer as Romelu Lukaku and Luis Suarez have in their careers, and just one fewer than Diego Maradona. All three of them played at four World Cups.

But most frightening for England ahead of Saturday's quarter-final in Miami: Haaland has scored in every one of his past 14 competitive games for Norway.

That run contains a total of 27 goals including three hat-tricks - one of which was part of a five-goal haul in an 11-1 win over Moldova.

It also includes braces against Brazil, Senegal and Italy, none of whom are exactly minnows of world football.

Mind you, we do have to specify competitive games, because Haaland did draw a blank in both of his last two friendlies before the World Cup.

That was a goalless draw against Switzerland in March, in which Haaland played 63 minutes, and a 1-1 draw against Morocco, where he played 72 minutes.

One particular key for England may be to ensure they maintain their concentration and individual intensity deep into the game.

That's because Haaland has made a real habit of scoring later on in games at this World Cup and in the build-up to it - particularly against stronger opposition.

The first goal of Haaland's double against Brazil came in the 79th minute. His winner against Ivory Coast was scored in the 86th. Both his goals against Senegal came in the second half.

Last November he got braces against Italy and Estonia. His first against Italy was in the 78th minute; and against Estonia, the 56th minute.

That makes Iraq the only side Haaland has scored against in the first half of any of his past eight games for Norway.

You also have to go all the way back to February for the last time Haaland scored before the 65th minute in a Premier League game...though the fact he did so against Liverpool and Real Madrid in cup competition in the interim rather takes the comfort out of that.

Conditions at this summer's World Cup have been a major talking point ever since the three host nations were revealed.

For England fans, in particular, that was pushed to the nth degree ahead of the visit to Mexico for their scintillating 3-2 victory over El Tri in the round of 16. We're sure you noticed.

The question is: do England actually have an advantage over Norway on that front when they meet at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium in the quarter-finals on Saturday?

Is the Florida weather really an advantage for England?

England trained in Florida in the build up to the World Cup, as well as beating New Zealand and Costa Rica in friendlies in Tampa and Orlando respectively.

Norway, meanwhile, have played most of their games in the north-eastern United States.

Haaland and co have been at Boston's Gillette Stadium twice and New Jersey's MetLife Stadium twice, with a visit to the air conditioned AT&T Stadium in Dallas for their round of 32 victory over Ivory Coast the only exception.

That may mean there is an argument that England should be better acclimated to the stifling heat and humidity that can descend on America's panhandle.

That could prove to be less of a difference than fans of the Three Lions might hope, however.

For starters, a lot of the reason Estadio Azteca was regarded as so intimidating was less because of the heat or humidity, and more that plus altitude and Mexico's home advantage.

Secondly...Norway's training camp for the tournament is in Greensboro, North Carolina. We're not ignorant of America's vast geography; that's still over 800 miles from Miami. But it is also much closer in subtropical humidity and mugginess than England's base in Kansas City, Missouri.

And when it comes to Haaland specifically...he did actually spend a summer training in Florida last year, when Manchester City took part in the 2025 Club World Cup.

Pep Guardiola's side were based at Lynn University in Boca Raton, just a 45 minute drive away from the Hard Rock Stadium.

City played two of their games in the Sunshine State, with Haaland scoring in both their 5-2 win over Juventus and their 4-3 defeat to Al Hilal in Orlando.

It may be time to stop obsessing over the weather and worry more about the actual football, then.

Each World Cup team has learned how much they will earn from this summer.

The prize fund for World Cup 2026 is now official with figures for the eight qualifying categories revealing the financial rewards on offer for those still in the tournament.

Depending on which nation you support, there's good news and bad news on how much they stand to gain for participation in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

World Cup prize money figures revealed

First, the bad news. More teams does not automatically equate to more money for those that failed to make it out of the group stage, who will still earn $9 million.

That figure is unchanged from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and only $1 million more than teams earned for their involvement at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

However all 48 nations automatically received $2.5 million in preparation money ahead of the tournament for qualifying which is $1.5 million more than in 2022.

The newly-created, and much missed, round of 32 will see a greater wealth shared with an $11 million windfall for the likes of Germany, Netherlands and Cape Verde.

Brazil and Canada can take some comfort from their last-16 exits which will net both sides a tidy sum of $11 million - $2 million up on the same stage four years earlier.

It's a similar story for first-time quarter finalists Norway, who are set for another $2 million mark-up with minimum earnings of $19 million for reaching the last eight.

The semi-final stage sees things become a little less even-handed with the third place play-off deciding which nation earns $29 million and $27 million respectively.

Whoever loses the final itself will be able to console themselves with picking up $33 million, which is the biggest mark-up from all existing rounds at $3 million more.

As you'd expect, the biggest windfall is saved for the victors with the new world champions in line to receive a cool $50 million, $8 million more than in 2022.

The World Cup winners will also earn more than the $40 million which Chelsea received for being the first winners of FIFA's revamped Club World Cup last year.

Point number one on Thomas Tuchel's gameplan for the World Cup quarter-finals will be: find a way to stop Erling Haaland.

The Norway striker is level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe at the top of the goalscoring charts for the tournament so far, netting seven times in just four games.

Haaland's brace against Brazil saw him get the better of Gabriel and Marquinhos, reputedly two of the best centre-backs this tournament had to offer.

So what are the chances England can succeed where no other team has at this World Cup and keep Haaland from finding the net?

To get an idea, we went back through Transfermarkt's data on Haaland's record against different individual opponents to see how Tuchel's centre-back options have fared in the past.

Case in point: Marquinhos and Gabriel had previously conceded a combined nine goals in ten appearances against Haaland between them, so perhaps it wasn't surprising he found a way to breach the Brazil back line.

Marc Guehi goes further back with Haaland than you might realise: they played against each other at international youth level, with England U16s and U17s getting the better of their Norwegian counterparts both times without Haaland scoring.

However, Guehi has not enjoyed a great record against Haaland since then. The Norwegian got a hat-trick for Manchester City against Crystal Palace in their first club meeting in 2022, and has added a further four goals in as many appearances since then.

That gives Haaland an overall record of seven goals in seven games against Guehi. But the only clean sheet the centre-back has kept against a man he now calls his teammate was a big one: Palace's 1-0 victory over City in the 2025 FA Cup final.

More encouraging news...Haaland has gone toe-to-toe with Ezri Konsa five times, all of them in Premier League meetings between Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Interestingly, Haaland has scored just once, which case the first time they met back in 2022 - and City have lost all of the past three meetings with Haaland and Konsa both on the pitch.

Dan Burn also has a strong individual record against Haaland, who was scored just once in meeting between Newcastle and City in which both players have shared time on the pitch; as with Konsa, that goal was in their first meeting, back in 2022.

Big asterisk though: Haaland's record against Burn at club level stands at 6 wins, 2 draws, and 0 defeats.

Haaland has played against John Stones as well, when Haaland was at Borussia Dortmund. The striker drew a blank then, too, with City winning both games 2-1 in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2021.

And while we're here, might as well: Haaland has scored just twice in games where he was up against Trevoh Chalobah.

Newcastle United are continuing with their strategy of investing in young players with potential, with the unexpected signing of an 18-year-old wonderkid from Ajax.

The club has switched tactics when it comes to bolstering their squad this summer, with youth favoured over established, experienced stars.

The sales of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have paved the way for a complete squad refresh, with Eddie Howe keen to bring in youngsters with high ceilings.

Newcastle set to seal signing of third player under the age of 21 this summer

The Toon have been busy already this summer, picking up French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and Ivorian winger Bazoumana Toure, both of whom are 20-years-old.

They have also been heavily linked with a big money move for impressive Switzerland starlet Johan Manzambi, another player who is just 20.

It now looks as if they are set to complete the signing of 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax.

According to reports from the Netherlands, a £23m fee has been agreed for the teenager, who made his senior debut in the 2024-25 season, aged just 17 years and 36 days.

The midfielder went on to make 26 senior appearances with the club altogether, scoring his first goal in a 1-1 draw against Feyenoord.

The same reports claim that the player had initially been expected to sign a new contract at Ajax, but that he is now due to travel to Tyneside to complete a move.

A five-year deal has been agreed in principle between Newcastle and Steur.

The move for Steur comes with Newcastle looking to add new midfielders to their team this summer, following the sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.

Joe Willock is also expected to leave during the current transfer window, while Arsenal have also had an offer rejected for club captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle have repeatedly said that the Brazilian is not for sale and are hoping to keep their talisman around for next season.

We all know that Erling Haaland was born in Leeds, where his father Alf-Inge was playing at the time. The question is: could he have played for England if he had wanted to?

We should acknowledge that this exercise is purely academic. Haaland moved to Norway when he was three years old and lived there until he joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2019, aged 18.

The man himself says it was never in question as to which nation he would represent, telling Goal: "It was natural for me to choose Norway. You never know how it would be if maybe my father played longer in England or whatever. Maybe I would be English, I don't know. But yeah, I'm Norwegian and I'm proud of it."

Could Haaland have played for England?

But just for the sake of a pub argument...could Haaland have played for England if he had so desired?

For the younger readers, the same conversation used to be had around Ryan Giggs during his playing career, on the basis that he had played for England schoolboys as a youth.

Giggs never would have been eligible to play for England seniors even had he wanted to, though, as he was born in Wales to Welsh parents, which at the time disqualified him from England duty.

His England schoolboys appearances came because he was schooled in England, having moved to the Manchester areas as a young boy due to his rugby player father getting a move to Swinton.

Haaland's situation is similar for slightly different reasons. He was born in England, and that would be enough to qualify him under FIFA statute 6.2(a)....as long he held UK nationality.

Haaland was born in England, and is likely to have been considered a UK national if either of his parents had settled status in the UK - which, as EEA internationals, they almost certainly did at the time.

The Home Nations - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - also have agreements between one another as to what makes a player eligible for any one of them. The current agreement has been in effect since 2010, and would not have posed any impediment to Haaland either: under agreement article 1(a), a player is eligible if 'he was born on the territory of the relevant Association'.

So...Haaland would have been eligible to play for England, right? Well, this is where the situation gets complicated.

You see, to prove his UK national status to FIFA, the hypothetical England-obsessed Haaland would likely have needed to have had a UK passport. And in reality, he has never had one.

He told Manchester City's club magazine earlier this year: “There was never a conversation about it because I was in Norway and it was not possible to get the passport then. I can get the passport now. I'd love to get the English passport, you know? Why not?"

The suggestion that it was 'not possible' for him to get a UK passport may not be strictly true, as far as we can tell. But it would probably have been a lot of faff and paperwork for his parents to complete for no good reason whatsoever unless they were absolutely dead set on Haaland playing for England in future. And why would they be?

So: if Haaland had really wanted to, and he had gone to the bother of attaining a UK passport solely for that reason, then yes, he would have been eligible to play for England.

As it is, though, he was raised in Norway to Norwegian parents, and never had any particular desire to represent anyone else...so it's entirely a moot point.

Besides, Harry Kane's working out alright for England, isn't he.

Over the past two decades, Spain have inflicted plenty of trauma and heartbreak on the Portuguese national team. La Roja beat Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup en route to their maiden title.

Two years later, Spain edged past their Iberian neighbours on penalties to secure their spot in the European Championship Final, where the team secured a third-consecutive major trophy after Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.

Portugal might have expected that pattern to change after beating Spain on penalties in the 2025 UEFA Nations League Final — the last time Spain suffered a defeat.

But at the 2026 World Cup in Dallas, Spain put an end to Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup dreams, perhaps once and for all.

“I leave with a clear conscience,” Ronaldo said after the match.

“I’ve done everything I could. Portugal had never won a cup before me and they’ve won three now. We won Euro 2016, which I think is as big as the World Cup.

"We gave everything…we played a good game, but Spain are among the best. They will get to the final or come close.”

Whilst Spain had demolished Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32, Portugal had only narrowly snuck past Croatia via a late goal from Gonçalo Ramos. Despite the super-sub heroics, Ramos didn’t see a single minute in Texas. It was far from Roberto Martinez’s only head-scratching decision.

Spain and Portugal traded blows in the first half, with Mikel Oyarzabal coming close to opening the scoring only to spurn his chance. And Diogo Costa once again demonstrated why he was Portugal’s best performer of the tournament with a shot-stopping clinic.

After a rollercoaster first half, both teams begun to take fewer risks in the second half. But just when it seemed the two sides were on level pegging, catastrophe struck for Portugal. Nuno Mendes, perhaps the sole left back in the world who consistently shuts down Lamine Yamal, went off with an injury in the 56th minute - Nelson Semedo replaced him.

Spain smelled blood and wrestled back control of the match, pinning Portugal into their own half. Spain grew into the game via their substitutions and eventually, in the 91st minute, Ferran Torres teed up fellow substitute Mikel Merino for the game-winning goal to secure Spain’s spot in the quarter-final.

And just as Brazil's World Cup exit marked the end of the Neymar era at international level, Portugal's defeat marked the end of Ronaldo's.

"It was my last World Cup, yes,” he added. “But as for the rest, there's time to think, to be with my family, and not say things in the heat of the moment."

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez will step down, with Ronaldo’s former coach Jorge Jesus likely to replace him. The Spaniard was able to bring home a minor trophy in the form of the UEFA Nations League, but ultimately, his spell will be regarded as a failure. One that was determined by the finer details, like the Euro 2024 penalty shootout defeat to France, and the last-gasp loss to Spain at this tournament.

Ronaldo, having reached the semi-final in his first World Cup, has since been eliminated in the Round of 16 in 2010 and group stage in 2014, followed by three straight Round of 16 eliminations. He will end his World Cup career with just one knockout goal – a penalty versus Croatia in the previous round.

Spain return to Los Angeles to face either the USA or Belgium, but as for Portugal, they will leave empty-handed, with far more question marks, regrets and what-ifs than anything else.

And Ronaldo will head back home with the sensation that, unlike the Euros, Champions League, LaLiga, and Premier League, the World Cup was the one competition he never quite managed to master.

The USA versus Belgium evokes memories of the latter's extra-time victory in 2014 when goalkeeper Tim Howard made a World Cup record 16 saves.

That was when Belgium's golden generation was at the peak of its powers and the US were plucky underdogs but this time around, there is little to separate the two.

Ahead of the game, there has been a political storm surrounding Donald Trump's interference with FIFA to ensure that USA star striker Folarin Balogun is eligible to play following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last round. With Balogun confirmed to be starting, it's the sort of game a commentator dreams to call - here's who's on duty for the BBC.

Due to the 1am BST kick-off time, the BBC have elected to go straight to the commentary team for this match, as opposed to having a studio presence to present and analyse the fixture.

Serving as the match’s main commentary voice is Robyn Cowen.

Alongside her is Matthew Upson, taking on the role of co-commentator.

Upson scored England's only goal in their 4-1 defeat by Germany at the 2010 World Cup. The former Arsenal, West Ham and Birmingham City defender scored one other international goal, also against Germany back in 2008.

Cowen was lead commentator on BBC One's coverage of the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, a tournament in which the Lionesses were victorious.

The winner of USA vs Belgium will have the privilege of facing Spain in the quarter-finals.

That last eight fixture is scheduled to be played at 8pm BST on Friday, July 10.

USA vs Belgium is one of the more interesting Round of 16 showdowns, precisely because not many predicted the Americans to make it this far, and also anticipated the Belgian capitulation that has become so common at the World Cup in recent years.

The USMNT have been a far stronger side this tournament, winning three of their games with ease, while Belgium were forced to pull off an all-time comeback to get beyond a dominant Senegal in their Round of 32 fixture.

This is a battle of over and underachievers at the 2026 World Cup, but who will serve as referee for the event?

Referee appointment for USA vs Belgium

USA vs Belgium will be played at 1am BST in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with the match being held at the Seattle Stadium.

Serving as referee for the event is Jordan’s Adham Makhadmeh, who has officiated three games prior to this face-off at the 2026 World Cup.

Mohammad previously officiated England vs DR Congo, in which the Jordanian did not fall for a clear-cut Harry Kane dive while the Three Lions were trailing 1-0.

He also refereed Belgium’s 5-1 demolition job against New Zealand in the Red Devils’ final Group G game, which left them atop the table standings.

To open his account in North America, Mohammad oversaw Spain’s 0-0 draw with Cape Verde, one of the most historic upsets in World Cup history.

In this tournament, the 39-year-old has averaged just two bookings per game, and is yet to show red or award a spot kick.

The referee is slightly less quick to wield his cards than peers at the tournament, averaging just 3.6 bookings per game in the AFC Champions League Elite.

That competition makes up the bulk of his refereeing experience, showing red nine times and awarding 13 penalties in 58 games.

In World Cup qualifiers and the Arab Cup, his booking average stays the same, at around three per match.

USA vs Belgium is a battle of two teams with disciplinary priors, as both sides have had a man sent off in North America, most recently the USMNT’s Folarin Balogun, who will not feature in the Round of 16 event.

The big talking point heading into this one is the suspended ban for Folarin Balogun, following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

More than even the best American strikers who came before him, Balogun is central to a team with genuine World Cup latter-stage credentials. Having him suspended against Belgium would have been a problem.

On Sunday, FIFA announced that Balogun's mandatory one match ban would be suspended, freeing him up to feature in the round of 16.

That red card notwithstanding, it's been straightforward enough for the US. They beat Paraguay and Australia with ease to book their place in the round of 32 and then Bosnia and Herzegovina when they got there. Losing to Turkey in a dead rubber was taken in stride.

Score prediction for USA vs Belgium

The game is set to be played on Monday, July 6 at 5pm local time (1am UK time).

Both sides will be in familiar surrounding at Lumen Field in Seattle: both teams played there once in the group stage, with Belgium also playing their round of 32 game at the stadium.

Co-hosts the United States have been full of endeavour since announcing their intentions for the summer with a 4-1 win over Paraguay.

Mauricio Pochettino's side have scored two in each of their games since then, with their sole defeat of the tournament, to Turkiye, coming after they were already guaranteed to top their group.

They have been significantly boosted by FIFA's decision to suspend Falorin Balogun's one-game ban for his straight red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last round - a bizarre move, even if we thought he never should have been dismissed in the first place.

Belgium have meanwhile flattered to deceive for most of this tournament so far. They were fortunate to draw with Egypt in their opener thanks to an own goal, shared a goalless stalemate with Iran, and, to be fair, absolutely battered New Zealand 5-1 to finish top of the group.

But they looked a long way off the pace through much of their round of 32 encounter with Senegal and were deservedly 2-0 down before mounting a stunning comeback in the final four minutes and winning it in extra time.

That all makes this is a tough one to call, which is also reflected in the bookies being barely able to separate them either - Belgium are only just slight favourites for the tightest of all the round of 16 games.

We really just can't get out of heads just how bad Belgium were for so much of the game against Senegal though, so we're going to stick our necks out a bit here.

Dallas Stadium is the place to be as Portugal and Spain seek to knock each other out of the World Cup and move on to the quarter-finals.

Reaching the last eight would demand that either of these teams should be taken seriously as contenders to win the lot but progress to this point couldn't have been more different.

Spain were frustrated by Cape Verde in their first group game but have eased past Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and Austria in their subsequent matches, setting up a very appetising last-16 meeting with their neighbours.

It's evident that Spain haven't yet played anyone of Portugal's calibre, but they've swept aside all comers and have made it through half the tournament without breaking a sweat.

If we don't yet know where Spain really stack up among the favourites, there are no surprises to be found with Portugal. Arlington will be behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal vs Spain: World Cup 2026 Preview

Eight years ago, Portugal and Spain met in the World Cup group stage in Sochi. The 3-3 draw didn't do either any harm as both went on to win one and draw one of their next two matches.

Ronaldo made himself the oldest scorer of a World Cup hat-trick with a little help from Spain goalkeeper David De Gea. He's been surpassed now but he's still going, still the focal point of the Portuguese team, still undroppable and arguably having a detrimental effect overall.

Yet he's still added three goals to his World Cup tally, an indicator of his importance to Portugal even if the extent of that importance is overblown by Roberto Martinez at the cost of a coherent attacking unit.

Spain's 3-0 win over Austria was their first World Cup knockout win since they won the final in 2010. Head coach Luis de la Fuente has pushed them beyond that hurdle with no fuss and now things get serious.

The historical advantage belongs to Spain, and Portugal have won none of their last seven games against Spain in normal time. The most recent meeting just a year ago was noteworthy, however.
