A baby elephant, around six months old, that had fallen into a pit in the Punagar area in Trincomalee was saved by locals and handed over to wildlife Conservation officials in Kantale. Wildlife Range Asst. J A V Wijekumara said that the calf may have had roamed away from the Herd and fallen into the pit. The officials failed in their attempt to find the Herd to allow the calf to rejoin its family. Veterinary surgeon of the department Dr W M Dharmakirithi provided treatment to the calf before handing it over to the Udawalawa Elephant Transit Home.
