Rolled into the Hamilton gun show this afternoon. Really, the only t hing Im looking for at a gun show these days is a good deal on large ammo cans. I have plenty of guns..although not necessarily enough guns…so it really takes a good deal to catch my eye and catch my wallet. But…managed to find one:
Found a paperless like-new Ruger 22/45 MkIV. I already have a new model 22/45 sitting in the safe, but one is none, right?
I also stopped by Trader Bros on my way back into Missoula. They do have some odd and interesting stuff from time to time. I sifted through a bin of holster, and there were some very nice new Galco pistol holsters in there at outstanding prices ($25). There were also some Bianchi UM84 magazine pouches. These ones accommodate double stack 9mm mags, so these will wind up being allocated across my mountain of Ruger P95’s.
Price?$7.50 ea. Sixty bucks for all eight. Seemed like a good deal to me.
The Bianchi UM84 holster isn’t a great holster, but it isnt really that bad either. Its big appeal is that it accommodates a very broad range of pistols. My bulky P95’s, 1911s, HiPowers, Smith and Wessons, etc. Nowadays you can find surplus ones in the junk bins at gun shows for less than $20. I’ve never met anyone who used one in the military and liked it, but for bouncing around in the woods its been just fine for me.

The Ruger P94/ P95 should have won the government contract for service handgun over the beretta in 1992/ 1993. They later learned the beretta test pistols were doctored for the tests, the initial issue ones had problems.
But for some reason at the time Italy needed a contract subsidy.

I recall reading somewhere that Army Automotive Tank Command or whatever it called itself back then did acquire 5,000 of the Ruger 9mm’s.
(I think now they are TACOM)
U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) awarded Sturm, Ruger & Co. a contract for 5,000 Ruger KP95D 9mm pistols.
I was able to fit a Glock 21 in the UM84 holster I had just purchased approximately 30 years ago. Impressive – the 21 is not a small handgun at all.
Those magazine pouch prices were incredible – very nice. You shop awesome.
The UM84 is actually a great holster; for what it was designed to do-securely retain your pistol in adverse conditions. It’s my choice for backwoods carry, and can fit my Glocks, 1911, Hi-Power, P220, etc. Headed home for a long weekend so I’ll stop in there this week and see what they have left.
The M12/UM84 isn’t bad…it’s secure as all get out. Lots of attachment options, and easy to move. Still used a pistol lanyard when I had to wear one.
But the M66 (leather) was horrible. Scratched up the weapons too.
Just a quick note on the 22/45 Mark IV. If you find magazines for the 22/45 Mark III, buy them and file/grind/cut the nub off the back. They are the same magazine, but different floorplates. Work fine.
Zero hope you have better luck with that 22/45 than I did. Mine was same but stainless and it was very picky on what .22 ammo worked and what didn’t. Finally got fed up and sold it at a gun show. Replaced it with a Taurus TX22 and what a difference. The TX eats any .22 brand of ammo with literally zero malfunctions over many hundreds of rounds.
My experience with both guns is the opposite. My 22/45 Mark IV feeds everything, but my TX22, is fine with the standard slide, when I put on the “target” conversion, it becomes a jam-o-matic. I sent it in to Taurus, it was returned (with no cushioning, just loose in the box), and it still jams. It is going up for sale,
I found that UM84 does not take well to the full size SIG P320, despite it being adopted into inventory as M17. Dunno how Army carries that M17.
The UM84, by and large, predates most polymer handguns which tend to be a bit bulkier than the all metal guns that were common at the time.
