Convert AVI to MP3
Save the audio from an AVI video as an MP3. It works with old camera and camcorder clips and downloaded videos, and the file never leaves your device.
Your file never leaves your device. How?
Your media is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers for conversion. Page assets (including the converter engine) still load over the network.

Where AVI files come from
AVI was the standard video format of the 2000s. Digital cameras and camcorders of that era, old webcams, screen recorders and many older downloads saved AVI. Family events, school performances and old interviews often live in AVI files that modern phones won't play.
Converting to MP3 keeps the voices and music in a small file that plays everywhere, which is handy for sharing a speech or song from an old video.
What happens to your AVI
FFmpeg in WebAssembly reads the AVI's audio, which is usually uncompressed PCM, MP3 or ADPCM in old camera files, and encodes it as MP3. Video codecs such as DivX, Xvid or Motion JPEG are ignored, so they don't need to be supported.
Camera microphones recorded at modest quality, so 128 or 192 kbps captures everything that was recorded.

Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg. Your file is read from your device and the result is saved back to it; nothing is sent to our servers.
Why won't my AVI play on my phone?
AVI often uses old codecs such as DivX, Xvid or Motion JPEG that phones don't include. Converting the audio to MP3 avoids the problem for the sound.
Can I convert the AVI video to MP4 too?
Yes. Convert Video to MP4 re-encodes it as H.264 so it plays on phones and in editors.
The MP3 has no sound. Why?
Some AVI files, like time-lapses and certain webcam captures, have no audio track. The tool tells you when there's nothing to convert.
Which bitrate should I pick?
192 kbps (High) sounds transparent for most music and is the default. 128 kbps is plenty for speech such as lectures and voice notes. 320 kbps only helps if the source audio is already high quality; it cannot add detail that isn't there.
How large a file can I convert?
Files up to 4 GB and 4 hours long on a computer, or 2 GB and 2 hours on a phone. The video is read in pieces rather than loaded into memory, so large recordings work; only the audio file being written has to fit in memory.
