Thoughts for 2009-06-30

Things on my mind recently...

  • Fred Travelena Dead at 66 http://tr.im/qhh9 Another entertainer passes under Obama's watch. Why does Obama hate entertainers? #tcot #

  • There are 15 armed people within 30 ft of me in this restaurant. This has to be the safest place to eat lunch in Columbus. #

  • Two convicts just escaped from a local work detail abou 45 min ago http://tinyurl.com/nck9gu With the 15 police sitting nearby, I'm safe. #

  • One of these things is not like the others: Eugene McCarthy, Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale, Al Franken #tcot #

  • Guy driving that beat-up Ford pick-up truck ahead of us looks like he's going to record a ZZ Top album, and is in no hurry to do it. #

  • After speeding through town and running red light (much to my consternation), Wife says "Would you tweet and let me drive?" #

  • Wife doesn't like to talk on cell phone while she drives. She does seem to like to hold cell phone in her hand, rather than put it down. #

Are You Being Served?

Ground floor: Perfumery, stationary, and leather goods, wigs and haberdashery, kitchenware and food. Going up...

First floor: Telephones, gents ready made suits, shirts, suits, ties, hats, underwear, and shoes. Going up...

Are you being served, sir?

Yes, we come from Iran. We look for freedom and democracy. You have a president? Mr. Bush? He help us, no?

I'm sorry, sir, but Mr. Bush has retired.

Yes, old Mr. Bush, you fire. We know. We want young Mr. Bush.

The confusion is understandable, sir. Both old Mr. Bush and young Mr. Bush have left our service.

You have Clinton?

Yes, as a matter of fact. Mrs. Clinton, are you free?

I'm free, Captain Peacock.

No, no. Not woman Clinton. Man Clinton, he help in Kosovo.

I'm sorry, sir, but Mr. Clinton has retired as well. If Mrs. Clinton won't do, perhaps our Junior, Mr. Obama can assist.

Obama? I like name. We talk with him.

Mr. Obama, are you free?

I'm free, Captain Peacock.

These good people would like some freedom and democracy.

Freedom and democracy? Ah, I see. Well, um, it's, um, like this, you see. Um, we don't really provide freedom and democracy.

But neighbor Iraq get freedom and democracy from you.

Oh, sir, not from me. No, sir. Not from me. Not at all. We did have a man here recently that, I believe, provided freedom and democracy to Iraq. But that was wrong. Very wrong, sir.

But Iraq like freedom and democracy. Oh, it not fit exactly, but Mr. Bush tell them it ride up with wear. And that happen. Now we want freedom and democracy.

If I might beg your pardon sir, didn't you have a free and democratic election recently? That seems to me to be freedom and democracy already.

We have election. But it, how do you say, not a free and democratic election.

Oh, but sir. There was a selective recount, wasn't there? And there were more votes cast than people living there, were there not? That's how the Democrats in my country do it.

You will not help me with freedom and democracy?

Oh, I don't see how I could, sir. But if you would bring your leaders here, I'm sure I can charm them so that they will just ooze freedom and democracy.

I see we have come to wrong place.

Thank you for coming by, sir. We hope we can be of asssitance in the future.

Ah, young Mr. Obama. I was watching how that was handled that. You've all done very well!

Thank you, Mr. Soros.

It's A Good Life

Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction.

Imagine a place called the United States, and there's a little building there called the White House. On a given morning not too long ago, the real world disappeared and America was changed. Its inhabitants were sure of one thing: the cause. A monster had arrived in the White House. Just by using his charm, he took away the automobiles, the banks, the sanity - because they displeased him - and he moved an entire country back into the dark ages - just by using his charm. This is the Twilight Zone.

Dealing with Dave

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin should declare victory and stop the game. In the battle with David Letterman, she's had her say. She's ahead. If she ends the game now, she wins.

What former late-night comedian David Letterman -- he used to be a comedian; now he just plays one on TV -- said about her and her daughter (whichever one he thought he was talking about) was in bad taste. Everybody knows it.

Heck, even the National Organization of Women has criticized Letterman for what he said. The NOW doesn't normally take sides with conservatives. And, true, they haven't so much agreed with Governor Palin as they have come down against Dave.

I expect that Governor Palin will drop it now. If Letterman keeps it up, he looks worse and worse.

But what about the little people? You know? Me? You? That guy watching you from behind the bushes over there? What do we do?

There have been many suggestions. One I've heard a lot is ... Boycott Dave!

That's just silly. Me threatening to stop watching Letterman would be like me threatening to stop beating my head in with a brick; I can't stop doing what I don't do. And I suspect that's true for many other conservatives.

Letterman was funny a long time ago. But, he's not now. Well, not funny enough to stay up and watch. Not even funny enough to schedule on the TiVo. Red Eye is. Letterman isn't.

Another thing people are suggesting is to petition CBS to fire Letterman.

To quote Hank Hill: "That's just asinine!"

We are conservatives. We're the grown-ups. We don't do like the left does and demand that some so-called entertainer be fired. Don Imus has said a lot worse than "nappy-headed 'ho's," but it was the left that demanded he be ... and got him ... fired over that little comment.

So, what do we do?

It's simple.

To deal with an attention-whore, you ignore them.

So, ignore Letterman. Quit criticizing him.

He's now a joke. And not in a good way. He's a parody of what he used to be. He's now a punch line.

So, if you mention him at all, there are a couple of ways to do it.

One is to refer to him in the past tense. Like, maybe: "Ah, Letterman. I remember him. He was funny a long time ago. Whatever happened to him?"

Another thing to do would be when someone cracks an unfunny (or even offensive) joke, say something like "Wow, you could write for Letterman" or "You're a real David Letterman, there, you know."

But don't go out of your way. If possible, don't mention him. Don't talk about him. Don't tweet about him. And, for goodness sakes, don't blog about him. That would be a complete waste of space.

Obama sings the Beach Boys

Aruba, Jamaica, I really hope they take ya,

Bermuda, Bahama, do it for Obama

Palau or Montego, please take 'em now, Amigo

Jamaica

Off the Florida Keys

There's this place Guantanamo

That's where you used to go

When our troops captured you all.

Bodies in the sand,

Of your buddies would would raise a hand

Against our troops in the war

But you surrenedered and were taken then

To Guantanamo

[Chorus:]

Aruba, Jamaica, I really hope they take ya,

Bermuda, Bahama, do it for Obama

Palau or Montego, please take 'em now, Amigo

Ooh we've got to move you from Guantanamo,

We'll close it fast

Without a plan, don't you know,

Because we said that we would close

It down, Guantanamo.

Martinique, please take this terror sheik...

We'll do it soon, you'll see,

No later than January

By and by we'll defy

The situation's gravity.

Terrorists' delight,

We'll make it easy for them to fight.

That dreamy look in my eye,

Makes people wonder if I might be high

To close Guantanamo

[Chorus]

Aruba, Jamaica, I really hope they take ya,

Bermuda, Bahama, do it for Obama

Palau or Montego, please take 'em now, Amigo

From Guantanamo.

We'll close it fast

Without a plan, don't you know,

Because we're going to close

It down, Guantanamo.

Port au Prince, don't make me give more hints...

Everybody knows this little place Guantanamo

It's where the worst of them go and kept away from us all

Down in Guantanamo

[Chorus]

Aruba, Jamaica, I really hope they take ya,

Bermuda, Bahama, do it for Obama

Palau or Montego, please take 'em now, Amigo

From Guantanamo.

We'll close it fast

Without a plan, don't you know,

Because we're going to close

It down, Guantanamo.

Hateful

A hateful man made the news yesterday. You've read or heard about it, I'm sure.

This hateful old man -- born prior to the U.S. entry into World War II -- has, for years, spouted hate for others.

This hateful old man has a long history of criticizing Jews. If you search the Internet, you can find his rants.

This hateful old man is a racist, who has made statements that have inflamed relations between blacks and whites.

This hateful old man is a conspiracy nut. Despite serving in the U.S. Navy, this hateful old man now spouts anti-government rhetoric, and blames the U.S. for the events of 9/11.

This hateful old man was a strong critic of President George W. Bush and GOP presidential candidate John McCain. Admittedly, this doesn't make him hateful, but it does show you something about his political leanings.

This hateful old man made the news recently. And my reaction was like many others that hear or read about him and people like him: "That darn Jeremiah Wright is at it again."

Of course, his recent comments that made the news were pushed out of the forefront by the actions of another hateful old man: James Wenneker von Brunn, another pre-World War II anti-Semite, who served in the Navy, made inflammatory statements, and is a conspiracy nut.

The difference between them is as stark as black and white. But no deeper than color. Beneath the color, there's not a bit of difference.

  19. Persian Gulf & Southwest Asia Czar: Dennis Ross

  20. Regulatory Czar: Cass Sunstein

  21. Stimulus Accountability Czar: Earl Devaney

  22. Sudan Czar: Scott Gration

  23. TARP Czar: Elizabeth Warren

  24. Technology Czar: Vivek Kundra

  25. Terrorism Czar: John Brennan

  26. Urban Czar: Aldolfo Carrion, Jr.

  27. Science Czar: John Holdren

There are more czars in the Obama Administration than there are in the Russian section of Hell.

Of course, Obama being a leftist and all, likes big government. So, there's no surprise that he's appointing folks left and ... left ... to oversee all kinds of topics. And, most of these don't have any kind of Congressional oversight.

You've heard of Congressional oversight, haven't you? Part of the whole "checks and balances" thing that the Constitution sets up. Keeps one branch of the government from getting bigger than the other branches.

On the other hand, maybe this is actually a good thing. I mean, Congress hasn't done anything useful in years. When the Republicans controlled Congress for most of Bush's terms, they acted like Democrats and spent your and my money like crazy. Only, not quite as bad as the current Congress.

The Supreme Court has been 4-1/2 to 4-1/2 for some time: four activist vs four Constitutionalists, with one in-between (Kennedy). The new Justice, whether Sotomayor (who's qualified, except for having no qualifications) or whatever stark-raving liberal Obama nominates instead, will take a liberal's spot, so it remains 4-1/2 to 4-1/2.

With neither of the other branches doing anything useful, why shouldn't the Executive Branch increase its power?

Other than the fact that the Executive Branch is run by a bunch of big government socialists who think your money is there's.

So, why stop at 25-30 czars? Why not appoint a bunch more:

  • Gaffe Czar: Joe Biden. Sure, he's vice-president, but he's already doing the job of Gaffe Czar; why not make it official?

  • News Czar: Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf. You knew him as "Baghdad Bob." He'd fit right in with this Administration. And it would give Robert Gibbs a break from having to make up explanations for things all by himself.

  • Anti-semitism Czar: Jeremiah Wright. He's already promoting anti-semitism as much as anyone is this country. This would give him a larger platform.

  • Fashion Czar: Michelle Obama. Remember Jackie Kennedy? Michelle Obama is equally qualified. Except for having poor taste in clothes. And men.

The list could go on and on.

It's going to be an interesting four years.

The 28th Amendment

Being a conservative, I don't like tinkering with the Constitution. There have been suggestions for Amendments protecting the Flag, or defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

I have been opposed to those Amendments. Not that I disagree with the intent of them, but I think there are ways of handling those issues without changing the Constitution.

However, there is one issue for which I would support an Amendment. In fact, let me propose it now:

Section 1. No bill shall be presented for vote before either House without being read aloud in full before the entire House.

Section 2. No member of either House shall vote on any bill without having been present for the full and complete reading of the Bill.

Would such an Amendment pass Congress?

Probably not. This would force Congress to accept responsibility for their actions. They hate that. But 2/3 of the states could compel Congress to call a convention for proposing Amendments, as outlined in Article Five.

Would such an Amendment work?

I think so. It would create shorter bills, for one thing. And fewer bills.

What's the downside?

Exactly.
