Ard Bit is the artist project of Ard Janssen, based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He is a composer, sound designer and field recordist whose work unfolds as subtle, layered audio sculptures, shaped by attentive listening, free improvisation and systematic composition, with a strong focus on minimalism.

He studied electronic music composition at the Institute of Sonology of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, graduating in 2003. Alongside work in composition and sound design for the cultural sector and advertising, he developed an autonomous musical practice that led to his debut album Spanon, released on Symbolic Interaction in 2009.

Between 2011 and 2014 he released a series of EPs on Shipwrec Records and Lowriders Recordings, further refining a sound world built from minimal structures, subtle textures and restrained rhythmic elements. With Ellioth (2014), field recordings appeared for the first time as a modest but significant element within his work. His work has since appeared on various compilations and has been reinterpreted through remixes by fellow artists.

In 2019, Six Scores One marked a turning point in his practice, introducing field recordings as a more substantial and structural component for the first time. The EP blends soundscapes, environmental recordings and rhythmic sources into melancholic, atmospherically layered compositions.

This trajectory expanded with Amazing Bubble, a drone, noise and ambient work developed through spontaneous improvisation with modular synthesizers and field recordings, followed by Amazing Bubble II. The latter received a mastering re-treatment by Jochem Paap at STOOR, further deepening its immersive and textural character.

Travel and place play a central role in Janssen’s ongoing practice. Since 2019 he has been developing Field Recordings, a long-term project consisting of albums that focus on specific locations and listening contexts. Rather than forming a closed cycle, each release functions as a self-contained album within a broader artistic research into sound, environment and attention. The seventh episode, 07 Iceland, recorded in 2024 and scheduled for release in 2026, continues this exploration.

Alongside this ongoing body of work, Janssen develops larger compositional projects that evolve over longer periods of time. Music For Delirious Episodes, released on Phainomena, explores inner worlds shaped by confusion, vulnerability and societal pressure through experimental electronic composition. In collaboration with Radboud Mens, he created Marking A Boundary With The Turning Point, released on Shimmering Moods and reissued as a double LP on ERS Records. His upcoming solo album Juxtaposed is scheduled for release in 2026 on Dronarivm’s side-label DERDE.
