In 2026, the United States will mark its Semi-quincentennial, celebrating 250 years as a constitutional republic—a milestone unmatched in world history.
America has not simply survived a quarter of a millennium, but we grew from a rag-tag-rabble of idealists to the most successful and powerful nation in the history of the world. 
 
Our nation has greatly prospered since its founding; however, these achievements are not due to the power of our government. Instead, our nation's success stems from the deliberate limitations of power imposed by our U.S. Constitution. Empowering citizens with liberty promotes personal initiative and, ultimately, this liberty has driven the progress and prosperity that has defined America. 
 
Our Founders understood that fully empowering the individual would not be sufficient in itself; there had to be some level of moral constraint to protect the rights of all citizens. This is why John Adams said, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." What Adams was expressing was that a constitutional republic with limited government can only succeed if citizens respect each other's rights. Without morality, self-governance cannot last.
 
In my role as a United States Congressman, I am often asked whether America can survive much longer, considering the seemingly immoral state of our modern culture and the number of internal and external threats to our liberties. My answer is emphatically, yes, if we look to our past and learn what sustained us for the first two-hundred-fifty years. The Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes says, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." This ancient axiom tells us that anything we may face today has already been faced in the past. To know how to address the problems of today, we need to look back at what has sustained us before and emulate that. 
 
Looking back to go forward is not a new concept; it is one that our nation's founders clearly understood. In July of 1776, during the debates about whether to separate from England, Benjamin Rush, a delegate from Pennsylvania, asked John Adams if he thought "...we should succeed in our struggle with Great Britain?" Benjamin Rush, so inspired by Adams reply, wrote of this exchange in in his journal, "...he answered me, 'Yes - if we fear God and repent of our sins...'"  John Adams was looking back to another society who faced similar challenges, ancient Isreal, and he was quoting direction God had given them in Second Chronicles 7:14, "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land..."
