4.1 out of 5 stars (241)

A BRAND NEW pulse-pounding psychological thriller from M. A. Hunter ⚠️👀 If you like Claire Douglas and Lisa Jewell then you will LOVE this! 📚🩸

'I loved this rollercoaster ride of a novel, full of unexpected twists and turns. Read it in one sitting!' - Jill Childs

How far would you go to keep your secrets buried?

Everyone has secrets they would prefer to keep buried, but that’s what makes me so good at what I do. I’ve always been able to sense when people are lying, be it through their body language or the way they speak. As a criminologist, I’ve made it my life’s mission to help those who’ve suffered miscarriages of justice appeal their wrongful convictions.

Thirty years ago, my 13-year-old sister was murdered and it felt like a part of me died with her. I wasn’t there when she needed me most, and I will never forgive myself. That’s what motivates me to help those who can’t help themselves.

But now someone is messing with me. They’re threatening to expose me if I don’t confess to my greatest secret. They want to ruin my reputation, but they don’t realise I won’t give up without a fight... or how far I will go to keep the truth hidden.

M.A. HUNTER is the pseudonym of prolific author STEPHEN EDGER, an Amazon Kindle UK and USA No 1 bestselling writer of crime and psychological thrillers. His body of work, including The Boat Party, Sleepwalker, The Woman on Platform 8, and The Tenants, has been likened to Freida McFadden, Lisa Jewell, and T.M. Logan.

In 2024 he was formally diagnosed with both Autism and ADHD, and he believes the wiring of his unique mind is what allows him to write three books per year, despite a full-time job and young family. He is a vocal advocate of neurodivergent acceptance, regularly posting about the challenges of living in a neurotypical world through his social media channels and TikTok.

Away from writing, he is a huge film buff with an encyclopaedic knowledge of actors and directors from the 1980s and 1990s. He enjoys walking his dogs (though not in the rain), cooking, and plotting future projects.

He hails from Darlington, grew up in London, but is now settled in Southampton with his wife and two children and is currently working on his first television screenplay.

M.A. Hunter also writes under the name Stephen Edger.

    A five star psychological thriller.

Abbey is a celebrated criminologist, whose speciality is helping people who have been wrongly accused of crimes. However, Abbey has a secret of her own. When she was 15, Abbeys sister disappeared and her body was found in a ravine. Abbeys evidence was mostly responsible for the man who was accused of her sisters murder going to jail, for that and for other crimes. Now Abbey is receiving blackmail notes, saying someone knows she lied, and the truth will come out. Abbey is determined to find out who is sending the notes, who wants to ruin her career and reputation.

This is a tense and twisted page turner of a plot, that kept me reading well into the night. A fabulous psychological thriller which I highly recommend. Thank you for my advance copy.

A great read from an author that is new to me. I recently won a competition and received 2 of this author's books, so naturally I chose another of their books that has been on my tbr since it came out last year. I was impressed and glad I finally got round to trying this author's work!

I found it to be an interesting and engaging concept with the fmc being a criminologist working to reverse miscarriages of justice. I feel like I've not seen this before so the story felt fresh.

I was invested from the beginning when it is revealed the main character has a secret she is trying to keep hidden. The action is twisty and well paced. Although some parts were a litttle predictable, I still really enjoyed this story.

After the buildup the ending felt a little quick, but it was still a good story.

Looking forward to more from this author!

    What a ride!

This one was a binge-read for me, and it had been a while since it happened.

Lots of twists and turns, suspicion of everyone... For once, I did find out who did what at some point, but I still enjoyed it. It is fast-paced, and with short chapters, it keeps you wanting more, which is what I like about a good thriller.

Hadn't read anything by MA Hunter before. I certainly will again. I'd be lying if I said I didn't see any of the twists and turns coming, but there were enough surprises in there to keep me on the edge of my seat. Under normal circumstances, I'll be lucky to read a book in a week. This one was devoured in a little over 24 hours. And that's probably all you need to know!

Not my usual genre to go for but really enjoyed it! It was fast paced and kept me wondering / trying to figure it out the whole way through. I like a book that makes me think and I read it in just over 24 hours - really liked it!

Would definitely read more from this author, it kept me gripped and I really liked the writing style.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC :)
