Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has arrived in the Marshall Islands today. The Micronesian state, along with Palau and Tuvalu, are the only diplomatic allies of Taiwan left in the Pacific region.
During his visit, the President is expected to inspect Taiwanese-funded projects. It's an important visit for Taiwan, as in recent years as PRC's government has convinced Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Nauru to cut ties and shift their allegiance to China.
"All Taiwanese presidents since Chen Shui-bian (2000) have visited the Marshall Islands," said Giff Johnson, editor of The Marshall Islands Journal.
"At an ordinary Marshallese point of view, people aren't really focused on the geopolitics of China versus Taiwan."
