Edit/update: Thank you everyone for all your lovely comments!! :)

Happy Holidays (whatever you celebrate). Here's an art for your enjoyment.

Have any of my follwers seen the animated B5: The Road Home, and if so, was it worth it? I'm curious about it.

Having recently completed a B5 rewatch I am, yet again, duly impressed at how good (and evergreen) the writing is.

Side note -- If you haven't Read J. Michael Straczynski's autobiography "Becoming Superman," I highly recommend it with the caveat of tw:childhood abuse and tw:addiction in the narrative.

This one hit hard. Back in 2019 I wrote a quiet little due South/Friends crossover fic featuring Chandler meeting RayK in a bar. It seems even more poignant now.

Thank you, @anagrrl for the gift of beautiful cover art! This was made for my Jack/Daniel Stargate fic, "Black Coffee in Bed". It's a friends-to-soulmates story that explores bed sharing as a metaphor for their entire relationship.

Read it here! https://archiveofourown.org/works/34207339

If you're as confused as I am about what's going on with Archive of Our Own (in a nutshell: some serious systemic issues that need addressing, ranging from racist attacks on members to abuse of volunteers and more), here's a roundup of links, should you wish to dig a little deeper.  Today I received a gift of original artwork from @clevermanka. I love it! Here it is framed on my bookshelf for everyone to enjoy.

When I started watching The Orville I didn't think I would make it past the first couple of episodes, but I'm so glad they changed the tone over time, and I'm equally glad that I stuck with it. In honor of making it through to the end of S3 (and loving it), I made some art in honor of  one of my new-to-me favorite shows.

I did it! I finally finished binding all of my fanfiction. All of my due South (and crossover stories) are bound in this three-volume set. Barbershop Duet got its own bind (see earlier entry for details).

I've now constructed six hardbound volumes of fanfiction, for a total of 267,807 words. Fandoms range from Doctor Who, The Thick of it, Torchwood, Good Omens, and due South to Stargate, and a few others included in crossover stories (The Magicians, Farscape, Friends, Slings and Arrows, and Homicide: Life on the Street).

When I look at the pile of books I've made, and the contents therein, it's obvious to me how far I've come and how much I've learned, both as a writer and as a bookbinder. I try not to cringe at my early efforts but rather think of them fondly, as my first baby steps into the scary unknown. Everyone's gotta start somewhere, right?

Even so, I don't feel competent or comfortable with the idea of binding other people's fic, so if I want to pursue this hobby further, I guess I'll just have to go finish those WIPs I've got languishing in a file. Hahahahaha (eep!).

If you're a new follower and/or curious, all of my fic and fanvids are accessible online here, under one of my three fandom pseuds (lightspire, WriteDragon, GallifreyWizard). My tumblr is where I tend to post my fanart and fan-edits.

I made a thing! My latest project was to typeset, print, and hand-bind my due South AU novel "Barbershop Duet," which I wrote for the 2021 C6D Big Bang.

The project was fun to do and I learned a lot. It was the first time I tried a "Half-Leather Binding" style; made hand-sewn three-color headbands; created illustrated title pages and covers, printed my own endpapers, and worked with typesetting justified text on a page. I also learned the hard way that I should always wear my cutting gloves when handling razor-sharp tools (ouch)!

You can read the story at archiveofourown.org/works/31717432/chapters/78501949 and view the full-color artwork that @spacetimeconundrum created for it.

I suppose you could consider this a belated entry for the Snowflake 2022 "make a thing" challenge. Isn't he pretty? :)

Challenge 15: In your own space, create your own challenge.

I challenge you to see something, someplace, or someone familiar in a new way. Go at a different time of day. Turn the thing (or yourself) upside down. Squint. Sit with it/them. Look for the beauty that is right there in front of you, always there for those willing to see (or hear, touch, smell, taste).

Allow yourself to be surprised, joyful, touched by beauty.

If you feel like it, share what you (re) discovered in the comments.

Challenge #14

In your own space, post your pictures of your fandom scavenger hunt results. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Direct-upload photos rarely work for me on this platform (I always have to link from an outside source), so I'm just going to describe things in my environment rather than use photos for this challenge.

1. a fannish item
So many! My favorite older fannish things are the photos of me with Peter Capaldi and Michelle Gomez (Doctor Who), which I have framed and hanging on the wall over my desk.

2. something round
Favorite new fannish round things: embroidered Stargate SG-1 team and Tau'ri patches, which I hope to sew onto a cosplay shirt at some point.

3. something that is your favorite color
The Doctor Who quilt I made, which has lots of TARDIS blue (cobalt) in it.

4. the last game you played (video, phone, table top, etc.)
Uno cards

5. a book you are currently reading
Does fanfic count?

6. album art of the first song that comes up on shuffle
A peacock feather. Song: Greenman. Band: XTC. Album: Apple Venus Volume 1

7. the last movie you watched
Black Widow

8. TV show you're currently watching
The Book of Boba Fett

9. the homescreen, lockscreen, or desktop wallpaper from your device
Doctor Daniel Jackson (Stargate SG-1) in a black tank top, with his arms folded across his chest.

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, wild times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1) The most intense fandom experience I've ever had was going to my first big comic-con in 2016. It was the height of my Doctor Who obsession, and I was lucky enough to meet Peter Capaldi, Michelle Gomez, and Arthur Darvill in person. My experience was a good one, and I know that cons are not always that way, but my experience was definitely one of the highlights of my life. Collectively, those actors are some of the nicest and kindest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. A new irl fandom friend helped show me the ropes and a grand time was had by all, which leads me to --

2) I've been fortunate to make a few IRL friends through various fandoms over the years, including Star Wars, The Colbert Nation, Doctor Who, and due South, and I treasure those friendships because those people are "found family" to me.

3) Other than great new friends, fandom has given me something very important, which is the inspiration to try several new art forms: fic writing, animation, vidding, all kinds of crafts, cosplay, digital editing and art, even gifmaking (which I am terrible at -- hats off to the gifmakers). I've even become interested in the anthropology and the history of fandom itself. I have learned so much and these things have enriched my life immeasurably.

I cannot even begin to imagine who I would be without the gifts and inspiration fandom has given me, and the friendships I have made along the way, nor would I want to.

In your own space, interact with someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Like many others, I've interacted with lots of folks because of Snowflake, and I wasn't sure how to approach this prompt.

So I'll throw it open to my circle: is there anything fannish you'd like to ask me? For example, do you have any questions about any of my artwork, vids, or fics (behind the scenes kind of stuff)? Or anything else you'd like to talk about -- I'm also a maker/crafter, paleo cook, gardener, and an Anthropologist/Archeolgist/Science Journalist by profession.

Feel free to come on over, put your feet up, grab a beverage of choice, and sit a spell.

In your own space, rec a fanwork (fic, art, vid, playlist, anything!) you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I just finished reading a Stargate fic  called "Hometown Boy" by princessofgeeks that blew my mind. It's a Jack/Daniel canon-adjacent, novel-length fic that starts before the Stargate 1994 movie even happened. It's a beautifully written, emotional deep dive into their relationship and well worth a read. It took the author five years to write and all that effort really shines through. Rated E for explicit content.

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

1) Fandom thing: I completed my second-ever due South Big Bang with my first-ever novel length fic, Barbershop Duet (so, two wins in one!). Couldn't have done it without the support of the dS community (thank you).

2) Another fandom thing: I discovered Stargate and joined the Stargate fandom. I wrote my first fics for this fandom (here, here, and here), bound them in a handmade book, and made some pretty cool Stargate art.

3) Personal thing: Held a family together and survived against all odds.

In your own space, name some fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy

Last year I discovered a wonderful resource (a book) for writers. The Elements of Eloquence, Secrets of the Perfect Turn of Phrase by Mark Forsyth. If you love words, grammar, literature, and the way language is constructed (and how it can be manipulated to create all kinds of feelings), you will enjoy this book.

I'm also learning to find my way around Discord and have joined a couple of watch parties (for Farscape and Stargate) that are helping me find new communities outside of dying tumblr.

Challenge #5

In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

In the fandom-realm, I wish I had more patience and energy for drawing and illustrating fan art. I'm a competent-enough artist but I wish I had the patience and energy to do the work required to get really good at drawing. Even after off-and-on years of trying, lessons, and whatnot, drawing still frustrates me, tires me out, and causes physical pain.

I suspect my EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) might have something to do with my struggles. Any artists out there with EDS or similar issues have any tips to share?
