In the portrait

she wears a coral

shawl across her

shoulders.

Terracotta lips

are set in granite.

Her eyes are the

color of the earth,

they  scream the

anguish of the world.

Her image is etched

into  ragged  tapestry

hung from nails

on a farmhouse wall.

She is captured by the

hand of a woman uprising.

She is proud,

she is Mexico.

  1. A truly brilliant piece of writing, dear Holly.

    You have captured Frida, beautifully.

You always blow me away with your words – (I sail my spirit’s yacht)

I wish Frida could read this!

      1. I figured that!
        Yes, it’s a fab post.
She was a unique person. I did draw her once, but I smoothed her look out… hard not to make her prettier.

Also, what a challenge to draw someone who did so many self portraits. I may try again in the future.

  2. A beautiful tribute to Frida, who lived a tragic life of pain, political turmoil, divided loyalties, and yet produced works of art that have never diminished for her country and those who come to appreciate what she left behind.

                    1. I promise not to have any pear wine until you are back home safe and sound. Then, I’ll make a toast to your successful day.

                    2. LOL! 😂. I’m sure they would like to partake of the Pear Wine too. But, wine and work has never been a productive strategy. That’s why the French are not famous for long work weeks and high production. So much wine, too few hours in the day.

                    3. You know, we could come up with an energizing sparkling pear drink that broadens the mind, opens the heavens, and maybe puts some pep in the step. I’m sure RFK Jr. could push it thru the DEA and FDA. All he needs is the GOO dancing like a prom night teenager and the deal is done.

                    4. The ultimate salvation of the human species. A Dooby soaked in pear wine and sprinkled with magic mushroom glitter. The GOO and his gang will be singing love songs and doing the Samba.

                    5. I have learned over many years that you can change a person’s personality in an instant. All you have to do is kick them in the butt in such a way as to lift them up in the air just a little. Then before the paralyzing shock wears off, you scold them furiously with what changes you expect to take place immediately, thus planting the seed for personality change and in many cases, making them a better person. Try it on one of your pesky doctors at work. They are all psychopaths anyway. A change will do them good. It works every time. Make sure you use your outside drill sergeant voice.

                    6. Waa haa haaa! That made me snort laugh. 🤣 I have this image of Red Sonja from Marvel Comics whooping some naughty Palace Guards. You really do have to keep the rowdy ones in line until it’s time to turn them loose.

                    7. So glad to hear that. It makes work less tedious. I actually enjoyed my job and looked forward to each day. The team had a great sense of humor so we spent a lot of time giggling. Hope it’s good for you as well.

                    8. That’s a good idea. I’m always telling myself don’t but then pop off with my eccentric views and then wonder why someone got mad. There are so many pointless rabbit holes to discuss and I need to teach myself to leave the poor rabbits to their hole digging and focus on whether I paid my internet bill or not.

  3. “as if nothing, as if no one, as if never…”

Those words are a place, a country… even kind of a flag, doodled in sad lost ink, within the quiet pages of a notebook nobody really knows how to read. I know that place. I’m sitting there now, waiting for somebody who stirs water with the softness of someone who knows skittish things…

with hands just intimate enough to understand.

Nothing, no one and never… staring at me from a world that expects us to feel despair in their presence…

instead of a liberation, opening the way flowers do in a storm.

  4. What a great photograph to go with these captured moments within a person who survived so much and also lived in such pain. Just gorgeous Holly. Sending love and appreciation for you and your words.
