Agents of Duke: The Phillips Enigma Episode 2

Following the tracking devices in ‘the jewel of death’ Dario Russo, Jaspar Hightower and CIA agent Rosie Carver catch a flight to Delhi following Kamal Khan and the Faberge Egg.

Meanwhile from New York City Ajax Penhaligan, Vikram and Doc Silver track Flying Buffallo and the mysterious ring. They reach a small airfield outside the Hamptons – with a Learnjet taxiing.

NO TIME TO LOSE! They spash their Dodge charger into the landing gear of jet. Ajax his gun jamming on the superior knitwear of his bespoke holster tosses a grenade at the goons in jet.

Guns in their fists Vikram and Doc Silver come out blasting. The goons in the car return fire with Mk68 Terry Carbines

Flying Buffalo ( ‘she’s quite a gal’) kicks out the back window of the hood’s car and runs to a cropduster plane which just taxi’d out a hanger.

Having stopped the villian’s car with devastatingly accurate fire, Vikram lobs a grenade under it despatching the henchmen. Buffalo boards the smaller plane and low & behold another henchman has a machinegun pointing out the door.

Diving for cover, guns in their fists, our heroes have no choice to see the sweet lady and mysterious ring fly into the sky.

However, all is not lost – they speed to JFK and by Doc connected their tracker to the air taffic control radar can see the plane lands in Maine and pressumable another flies on to Disko Island, in Canada’s arctic.

Disko Island – actually Greenland but the scriptwriter (GM) got it wrong so in this universe its Canadian, always been, yup, nothing to see here.

Following the tracker they are attacked by a polar bear – but not out of malice the poor creature was fitted with a helmet and cameras. It smashes up the hovercraft. Doc Silver uncovers it was under cybernetic control. “Is there no infamy the Red Shadows won’t stoop too “ wonder our heroes as they drink their bovril before it freezes? They proceed the rest of the way on foot. Ajax is glad he brought extra chunky knitwear.

They reach the Red Shadows arctic base and ambusing a patrol take on their uniforms.

Ajax in the base aquires an office uniform and using Doc Silvers science skills they find a laboratory.

Entering via the mezzerine floor they see a casket like tank with the ring in it and blood bags feeding the ring. A ghastly corpse is reconsituting in the tank to the approval of the gathered red shadow boffins.

Our agents leap into action – guns in their fists. The tank is shattered by a grenade but the hulking moustachioed figure grabs a boffin draining him of blood and seemingly completely resurrected.

Blazing their way to the radar room Doc Silver turns the bases radar into a signal for Canadian voodoo jets to bomb the base. (Because Disko island is in Canada.)

They escape judt in time to see the base go up in flames. Next stop join their colleagues in Delhi.

Agents of Duke: The Phillips Enigma Episode 1

The Agents of DUKE (Directorate of Undercover Kinetic Espionage) are despatched to New York Citaeeeee. Agent Pepsi Cooler spotted John Shepherd, Red Shadow agent, in a swanky bar talking to Paul Lane, lead auctioner of Phillips a swanky New York auctioneers. Pepsi has disappeared and your groovy playboys smell a rat.

They hit the Gettysburg, the sweet spot Sheppherd but the pressure on Lane. But Lane and Sheppherd weren’t alone – a long drink of water they later find out is known as Flying Buffalo* was with them. Not only that but they where under the watchful eye of a soul sister.

They find the cab that took the threesome from the bar dropping Sheppherd and Ms Buffalo at the Waldorf Astoria and Lane at Grand Central Station.

  • a faberge egg ‘ the jewel of death’
  • a collection of ancient khmer jewelry
  • a tiara belonging to Princess Louise Schelswig-holstien-sonderburg-clucksburg
  • football boots that belonged to noted Amhurst Albion striker Charles ‘deadshot’ Keen

Ajax and Vikram hit lanes pad and give him the third degree. Looking over hos books they not the dude is into the esoteric. They also find a hidden emvelope of photos showing Lane in flagrante delicto with the lovely Miss Buffalo.

Lane spills the beans Flying Buffalo seduced him (a married man.) Then Sheppherd blackmailed Lane to sell the Khmer jewellry for the Red Shadows and allow Flying Buffallo to be a buyer in the auction, to buy the ring.

All the items have an esoteric reputation for example ‘Dead Shot’ Keene’s football boots where supposedly haunted and give his soccer skills to whoever wears them. The Black Sword supposedly exists from ancient prehistory.

The schmooze other bidders at the auction for the ring Lord Courtney a disolute noble who says his fanily have an interest in the ring and hypnotist Charles Randolph who deflects their interest but suggests they meet him at the Bramford building.

At the auction they Buffallo buys the ring but Jaspar as the display handler gets a tracker in the ring box. They also put a tracker on the faberge egg having noticed that it sold for much more than it was worth to Kamal Khan, an Indian arms dealer. They also noticed the bidding was driven up by a Rosie Carver, fashion publistist (and BOFFIN confirms a CIA agent.)

Agents of Duke: Episode 1 Part 2: The Braughaut Conundrum Conclusion

Doc Silver and Ajax Penhaligon are joined by adtendaline junkie wheelman Dario Rossi and proceed to the Casa Negra.

Dario and Ajax sneak into the basement through an open cellar door entering a maze of uniform concrete corridors under the medevil villa. However when Doc tries to join them he is detained by red uniformed goon and take to that cellar.

Taken to the brig Doc finds himself detained with non other than Claude Braughaut! The Doc jail breaks his electric key on his cell and is about to be shot by his jailer when his pals break in and rescue him.

However the brig giard gets and unscilenced shot off – que klaxons and flashing flights. Fleeing theough the maze of twisty corridors all alike Doc gives parting fire and they fit demolition charges to bring corridors down on the pursuing forces brandishing MP40s & AK47s.

They reach the underground helicopter pad – Ajax runs to the lever that opens the roof, Doc mans the M60 on the chopper to keep the hoods at bay and Dario expertly flies the huey rescuing Ajex who grabbed its spontoon as they escaped into the azure Maltese sky.

Claude Braughaut informs he was listening to a hit parade record in the Belgian equivalent of Woolworths went it brainwashed him to go to Malta and board Stefaniko’s yacht. How far does this conspiracy go ? and what is the Circus el Diablo ?

Agents of Duke: Episode 1: The Braughaut Conundrum

Noted Belgian rocket scientist Claude Braughaut, has washed up in Valleta’s Grand harbour. DEAD and with his hands mangled seemingly by a proper accident.

His last known whereabouts was at a soiree the night bedore on anoral and apolitical Greek Arms deak Stelios Stafanikos’ yacht ‘the Orca.’

Ajax Penhaligon hits the casino and schmoozes Stelios & his spectacular companion Wilkinson ‘razor’ Sword, a former croupier from Las Vegas. Gettjng himself an invite to the yacht and Jasoar Hightower & Doc Silver as art appraisers (part of a scam stelios wants to pull on his insurers.)

The Hotel

Away from the smoke. stale sweat abd champagne of the casino the other ahents investigate Claude Braughaut’s hotel room. Jaspar loudly appreciates art, Vikram reports him as an art thief to the police guars on the scientist’s room ‘ 97B’ and they find several curiousities. All the clothes are department store clothing bought in Naples and the the draw they find a ticket to the Circus El Diablo, which BOFFIN can confirm recently toured Napoli.

Due to report of a art thief Inspector Gevacse of the Maltese Police arrives searching for infamous art thief ‘the Eagle.’ – out heroes make their escape.

The Morgue

Vikram break into the Valleta Morgue and Dr Silver examines the corpse of Dr Braughaut. His clothing is in Belgian but he also has signs recent plastic surgery. They leave just in time to give Inspector Gevacse the slip by claiming to be with Interpol and reporting a sighting of ‘the Eagle.’

Casino & Casa Negro

Ajax revisits the Casino and charms croupier Christina who lets him know Stelios is often seen with John Shepherd. a disgraced and didcharged Ex-Royal Marine mercenary. Shepherd has a villa Casa Negro/Noir outside Valleta. Ajax takes a vespa and recognoiters the villa sees strange red uniformed goons in the propery.

The team regroups abd takes a charter helicopter tour over the island spotting Casa Noir has a hidden heicopter handing pad and a submersible tunnel leafing to it from the coast.

On the Yacht

Ajax turns up and starts playing cards with Stelios. Meanwhile Jaspar and Doc start appraising Stelio’s art – discovering a red sophisticated computer / radio hidden behinf a painting – in red with this symbol.

Ajax feels whoosy and has to take a lie down. Razors thoughtfully provides him with headphones and music – a errie hypnotic tune thst starts speaking of the corruption and capitalism and the path of the Red Shadows.

Razor discovers Jaspar and Doc Silver searching the yacht and fights them throwing her monofilament sharp playing cards. Doc through brandy on the radio starting a fire that soon spreads to the highly flamable sofas. Razor escapes and show how leaves the ship.

Sailors rush to join the fight but are picked off by Vikram who has followed in dinghy. Stelios escapes to the roof of the yacht and fires a red, white and black flare. A red huey with with fitted floats the has a heavy machine gun. Seeing no one to rescue to flies off back towards the Casa Negre.

Fighting through the acrid smoke they find in the wheel house carts for a voyage to Shadoloo and a ticket for the Circus el Diablo.

These are the current Tuesday night Agents of Duke

Ajax Penhaligon

Bon viver, con man and charmer. As a master of the con he considers Vikram to be guache thief and they have a rivalry as to who’s methods are best.

Jasper Hightower

An elite assassin with an appauling bourgois taste in art but he fancies himself as an advant garde collector. He is jealous of Doctor Silver’s intellectual powers. He buys art from Vikram.

Doctor Silver

With a PhD in Quantum mechanics Doc Silver is a two fisted scientist spy. He recruited Vikram to DUKE, when Vikram stole Einstien’s lost unified field theory and Doc persuaded him to that such knowledge couldbt fall inti the wrong hands. He thinks Ajax is a dandy and a fopp.

Vikram ‘Victor’ Harrisson

Ace cat burgular and high stakes thief turned straight(ish) due to the persuasive powers of Doc Silver. He trades (stolen) art to Jaspar Hightower while chortling at Jaspar’s poor taste. He has a rivalry with Ajax.

Agents of Duke: Session 0 What is DUKE? (Department of Undercover Kinetic Espionage)

I’ve started to run the first part of my Mercenaries, Spies and Soviet psychics game. We started with a session 0 to develop the players agency

Department of Undercover Kinetic Espionage (DUKE)

DUKE is a special branch of NATO espionage.

It is run by Sir Reginald Fosdyke, KG GCB GM DSO PC DL. A crusti olf veteren of MI6 with two wooden legs due to an injury he suffered while a field agent on the Korean Peninsula.

Kinetic Enforcement – our players section, field agents of playboy and playgirl spies.

The Control Room – a huge room with a map of the world, plotters on bubble chairs mounted on cherry lickers and BOFFIN taking up a whole wall whirring.

Susistsnce – The Tea Lady (and because this is a NATO organisation the Expresso Lady, Baguette Lady, Meze Lady, Tapas waiter etc;)

Typing Pool – smoking hot administrators also contains the most elite assassins.

Research and Development – the department thst develops DUKE’s unreliable gadgets.

Analysts – The clever clogs thst review intelligence.

Quatermaster – supplies all the kit, including R&D’s didgy gadgers.

BOFFIN

Basic Operation for Fatal Force Inflitration Networks – this is the GIANT DUKE supercomputer lots flashing lights and giant magnetic tapes.

Agents get their missons from a friendly paoer seller (always the same agent) in jolly national costume of whatever exotic location the agents are in. The camera then zooms in on the newspaper headline (episode title) while the agents reads their briefing from the paper.

Spies, Mercenaries and Soviet liberators

I am proposing to run three campaigns that will share the same backdrop. they may not run at the same time they may be run at separate times and overlap but together they will build an interrelated world. Really its one campaign with three sets of pcs  

Agents of DUKE (Directorate of Undercover Kinetic Espionage) 

1960s 70s Playboy and play girl secret agents against the backdrop of glamorous locations. Agents from across the world work for this select body under the direct command of NATO.  I intend to recycle and reuse James Bond PG scenarios as well as home grown adventures.

Cry Havoc 

A mercenaries game with veteran soldiers of fortune undertaking renegade missons in exotic locations such as Shadoloo, Illyria, Ruritania, Buranda, Zembala and the Republic of Isthmus. They will have freedom to pick missons and paterons. 

Troika 

Combined Eastern bloc superspy ‘misson impossible team’ made up of equal thirds of 1) KGB and allied agencies, 2) Military staff and 3) Communist parties. They operate as Agent XXX to Agents of Duke’s 007s operating in the sane territory as the playboy agents and cry havoc mercs but defeating capitalism and aiding freedom fighters. . Furthermore some troika agents have special unique abilities and talents beyond the human norm. 

If you are interested….

I would suggest making characters for one or more of the campaigns and you can slot in as and when you have capacity. I am propsing to use chaosium basic roleplaying. 

i am currently thinking tuesday sessions 7/9pm and occasional sunday sessions 10am-12 noon. Starting mid-late May depending on details DM if interested.

New Game: Cosmic Hobos

i am proposing a game where you play 1930s hobos riding the rails (think emperor of the north, boxcar bertha or hard times.)

The player characters all have latent or unknown psychic powers. As result of the first scenario thry will be cast a drift in the multiverse with a quest to complete. I will use Chaosium basic roleplaying,

Think

  • scanners/the Fury/medusa touch/ carrie meets
  • emperor of the north pole/ hard times/boxcar bertha meets
  • sliders/michael moorcock

Session Zero Questions – to be done after rolling stats but before skills – it is 1930 so a WW1 veteren could be as young as 30.

  • What was your characters life before becoming a hobo ?
  • Why did your character become unhoused ? What was the underlying cause? (ie alacholism) and the transforming incident? (ie bankruptcy)
  • Why do they ride the rails ?
  • How do they make ends meet ? (begging, petty theft? busking, bare knuckle boxing, casual work)
  • Have they any scars or injuries
  • Do they any momentos of their previous life
  • What? if anything? is turning your life around ?
  • 1d10 What items are in their hobo bundle
  • We will then establish if there is any previous contact between the PCs rolling a d10 for each bond – 10 being very close and 1 no knowledge

Grogmeet 2026

Grogmeat 2026

Grogmeat 2026 returned for its 10th year or is 9th?  in Manchester. Our venue for the weekend was the the Brickhouse student venue adjacent Oxford Road station. Despite yellow and amber weather warnings that majority of Grogs  managed to make it to the Northwest England’s second city.

The venue was a little chilly and had illumination challenges but it was wonderful to not have to do the cross manchester dash that has been a feature of other grogmeets. It also served pleasant pizzas and the staff were very accommodating . 

To be fair all GMs had been warned of the lighting issues but most, myself included forgot to provide extra lighting. 

So to the gaming ! 

 A crack’d and Crook’d Manse 

The first scenario was big beard Stef running a hack of a classic called Cafu haunted house mystery.  A bunch of Miskatonic university academics were accompanied by a private eye to attempt to recover books from an abandoned house. In the course of our investigation we may have uncovered what happened to the Arrington investigator who abandoned the property well we have done, but largely we bickered we split up I managed to get myself caught in a cellar with a monster it wasn’t pretty.  After a lot of fun it ended with a suitably ominous horrific ending. Splendid stuff with a great GM and players. 

UNIT: Terror on the Aberdeen to Penzance Express

Operation Kazan – UNIT boards the Aberdeen to Penzance train on which a mysterious infection has broken out and have to deal with the Cornish and Highland Terrorists aboard. While the SAS and scientists on train deal with the infection a investigation team at HQ hunts down leads to help them.  Each player had one character on the assault/rescue team and one on the investigation team. 

I ran this and my assembled players threw themselves into this with gusto dealing with the transformative illness, rowdy passengers, attenpting wierd science while tracking down leads about various groups on the train.  And they saved the day though SAS was taken out by terrorists (the player took on a passenger) and other subject to infection. 

There were easter eggs for Horror Express, the Cassandra Crossing, Who Dares Wins, Plague of the Zombies, The Reptile, Local hero, Ghost story for christmas: the ice box,  pink gins and googlies, Cranford and The Archers (i think thats all of them.)

Elite Level Sport / 2am club 

Then there wss revels and much conversation ending in elite level sport (air hockey) into the wee hourrs. 

A Very Peculiar University 

With some irony the next morning my first game was more Cuthulhu set in the ironic drama comedy of a very peculiar practice run by a medic and an academic in the person of our GM. Talk about busman’s holiday.  I played a nun whom I decided had taken a vow of silence – a concept that would have struggled on a virtual table top but gadly worked really well. We uncovered sinister goings on in the new free enterprise student therapy on campus and saved the day. Even Bob Buzzard came through.

I will say this game had a scene which is the closest I’ve come to tapping a x-card – not in a bad way. It wasn’t gore or anything but a mentally ill patient trying to bargain to be released when they clearly were not well. I am glad i did not tap the card because in a game with some silly element it really raised the stakes of the horror.

Next stop 1944 Normandy Rob had put together a WW2 scenario where our socialist tank crew were ccommanded into enemy territory to destroy and if impossible recover the occukt library of (Denis Wheatley’s) Duc d’Richelieu.

Rob had 12mm models of our churchill tank and German opponents with watercolour painted battlemaps he’d done. The system for operationg the tank was close to what i’d developed for watership hull down using black hack. 

We faces moral dilemmas that ultimately split our crew and led to PvP TPK. All the PCs were based on a post war labour Prime Minister so it was very easy to get into our roles.

Great stuff and we all got a model tank my Putney Princess sits alongside my ‘watership hull down’ Bigwig

Morpcon – Shadow over Saint Vivyan

A WH40k scenario where I was a bodyguard for auditors for a corporate syndicate. Each character had a secret agenda.  Our glorious leader Alar played with considerable gusto by Andrew was an officious bully on the take. I was on the run and looking to find an escape. 

As we got settled in at the quiet town which produced immortality serum for the Empire avoiding the local deadly wildlife and scamming the locals we started to find it a little too perfect. All ending with conspiracy scarey monsters, bretrayal, an attempted fragging and my character having her  brain eaten.

A couple of pints and a leisurely move to the wrong Manchester railway station resulted in a fat man dash across the City and just grabbing my right train. 

All in all a wonderful convention and great to see friends old and new – just a shame its back to reality now.
