I’ve already covered this more or less in this post, but I’ll elaborate further on one of the answers..
You won’t always be young. Sooner or later you’ll find you’re middle-aged. I’ve been through middle age, and now at the age of 68 I’ve now unfortunately had to put middle age behind me. However, one thing I learned from my mother still rings clear: You only have one body, and so look after it because if you don’t you won’t be able to get out of the armchair and you’ll have a miserable old age.
Yes, that old adage ‘You are what you eat‘ is absolutely true. All those fizzy drinks, fat and sugar-laden foods will eventually catch up with you when your body finally rebels around the age of about 50. You’ll find to your horror that your waistline has increased, your pancreas has become exhausted, and one day in the near future it might finally protest its last and refuse to pump out any more insulin. Added to this diabetic crisis, your weight-bearing joints might by this time have started to creak, stiffen up, and refuse to work as well as they used to. You will find that you’re old before your time. Nobody is exempt, and it might happen to you. Throw in an excess of cigarettes and alcohol as well, and your lungs and liver could well join in the protest.
There’s no one pill to make it all better. Wouldn’t it be great if there was! However, you can try to repair the damage of years of excess by doing core-strengthening exercises like Pilates, or swimming, or walking a couple of miles every day. Also, combine this with having a clear-out of all the cruddy food in your kitchen and fridge. Replace it with healthy stuff, and this will go a long way to staving off an armchair existence.
I know one woman who is so fat and unfit that she cannot now get out of bed. Her joints are so bad that she has to wear a nappy because she cannot get to the toilet anymore, or even to a commode. Her whole world centres on what she can eat next. Carers come in 4 times a day and do what they can for her. This is somebody’s real-life existence. Don’t let it happen to you!
