The son of George T. and Sarah Agnes Rowland, George was born in Wolverhampton in 1894. The family had moved to Nottingham by 1901, and George and his parents were still in Nottingham in 1911, along with his siblings Agnes May, William Henry, Elizabeth and Thomas. George was working as a carpenter’s apprentice.
George enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment (service number 266963). He was killed in action on 23 July 1918 in Belgium. He is buried at Nine Elms British Cemetery in West-Vlaanderen.
Jacob was born in Wolverhampton in 1885, the son of William and Susannah Walton. In 1901 they were living at 7 Willenhall Road, Bilston, along with Jacob’s siblings Joseph, Henry, Mary and Minnie. From 1903 onwards, Jacob enlisted in the Militia, and served in the East for six and a half years. In 1911, Jacob was serving in India. He returned home on Reserve, and married Martha Ward in Wolverhampton in 1913. The couple had two sons, James (1917) and John (1918).
The sons of William and Charlotte Cope, Maurice was born in Wolverhampton in about 1892 and Joseph in 1893. Maurice attended St Joseph’s School in Wolverhampton. The family were living in Newport, Wales, by 1901, and the household consisted of Maurice and Joseph, their parents, and siblings William, Annie and Mary, and his uncle Joe. Along with his brother, Joseph, Maurice later lived with his grandmother at Lower Horseley Fields, Wolverhampton.
Joseph enlisted with the 2nd Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment (number 8938), disembarking on 9 November 1914. He was killed in action in France on 18 May 1915. Again the Midland Counties Express of 6 January 1917 wrongly gave the date as 16 June 1915. He is remembered at the
