Raúl Díaz Palomar - “Lizard’s Tail”
from Original Music for ‘Around the Dream’
vulpianorecords.bandcamp.com/album/original-music-for-around-the-dream

“It was on a snowy night in February 2016, during the party following the premiere of *Maqbara* —a documentary I was involved in— when the director first told me about *Alrededor del sueño* (around the dream). It was a work in progress: a documentary centered on the work of Ángel Marcos, one of the most acclaimed artistic photographers on the international scene.

The initial idea was to complete it by the end of 2017, but various unforeseen events delayed the process. Finally, in 2023, a work-in-progress version was presented at the Havana Biennial in Cuba.

Nearly ten years after that first conversation, I’ve decided to revisit some of the musical pieces I composed for the documentary. I listened to them again, refined a few details, and gave them new life. Releasing them now feels like a way to bring this long cycle to a close—and to share a part of the journey that remained on hold for so long.

I hope that, as you listen to this music, something in it resonates with you in the same way Ángel Marcos’s photographic work once resonated with me.”

Brevyn - “Silicon”

“A glimmer toward Brevyn’s darker musical interests, a mirror reflecting real-world bleakness and dread. "Silicon” hearkens back to the eerie murk of the title track of previous work Spires (2019), but more steel-gilt than deep sea.“

Osiris Saline - “Effort and Loss”

“A synthy instrumental track of mourning, grief, and fighting until the end. Until you can’t.

The image used in the cover art is Passagieren [1935] by Tinus van Doorn, an expressionist who struggled and created incredible pieces, up until his and Annie Vermeulen’s own end under the Nazis.”

Thorn1 - “Stoned Waters”

“This is one of the instrumental compositions that was waiting for its time and refinement – it was written under the emotions of moving to another country, in Serbia, attempts to integrate, and inevitable isolation. At that time, I didn’t even have all my musical instruments on hand, so I was a bit limited in my means of expression. The music itself became a tool to escape this state.”

Lyrics:

Lately Kind of Yeah - Motor Grown-up (VULP-0226)

Part of the Lately Kind of Yeah archive series.

For my ears, Lately Kind of Yeah and evocations of nature come packaged as one, accompanying or even transcending literal lyrical interpretations or impressions one might scoop from track titles. Melodies plod like footsteps on dunes; guitar riffs swirl through crunching distortion like leaves in a windstorm. Looping vocals become the benevolent mantra of waves rolling against the shore, especially notable in the release’s centerpiece, “Zones” — let it wash over you.

Lately Kind of Yeah - Zozo (VULP-0225)

Part of the Lately Kind of Yeah archive series.

Zozo is a unique work in the LKOY catalog, comprised of songs recorded as part of a weekly exercise. Balanced between crunchy distortion and frosty ambient elements, the flow of Zozo is reminiscent of the transition between a particularly hot autumn and crisp winter. Gentle serenity trades off with barrages of heavy guitar attacks. Various vocal textures are on display; sweet clarity, aggressive screams, and whispers. Guitar artistry is evident throughout, with kaleidoscopic freakout passages punctuated with more spectral instrumentation, perhaps the peak of LKOY’s achievement in instrumentation, which is saying a great deal for this dynamic, disciplined artist who has been part of the Vulpiano family for over a decade.

Words from the artist:

originally released September 20, 2021

Beginning at the end of December 2019, a piece of music was recorded every seven days over the course of seven months. Some recordings were omitted but tracks 1–16 remain chronological. Special thanks to David, Zachary, Ashley, and Marilyn.

Lately Kind of Yeah - Uncurse (VULP-0224)

Part of the Lately Kind of Yeah archive series.

The LKOY archive series returns on Vulpiano Records for the first time since 2019 with ‘Uncurse,’ an album of acoustic tracks. Lo-fi production and sparse instrumentation set the stage for an enveloping, warm coziness replete with psychedelic washes of soft noise. The pretty vocals, sometimes layered and chanting as in the casting of a spell — or the undoing of one — weave with grace and vulnerability through these gauzy landscapes.

Words from the artist:

Uncurse is an acoustic song collection, recorded between 2011–2017 in Illinois, Kentucky, and Wyoming. For an empty room, the addicted, and hollowed wood.

Lately Kind of Yeah - Shadows in Anxiety/An Upward Wellness (VULP-0223)

A Netlabel Day 2022 Release

A suite of structured chaos: arrhythmic ghosts struggle to break through a smothering temporal membrane. The manipulated improvisation eventually gives way to patterns of fretless harmony and industrial churn, as if the titular anxiety finally takes hold of the passage of time.

Finally, to a land of total contrast: ascendant and unshackled atmospherics.

Kaelin Bougneit - Untitled, 2022 (VULP-0222)

An eclectically impressionistic, mournful ambient record. A submerged, undead guitar drowning beneath acid-glitch squelching and radiophonic interceptions segue into other places before its sunset afterlife at the end of the sequence.

These are electronic drones invoking acoustic spaces of the world, both micro and macro: an insect’s perspective of burbling streams becoming celestial waterfalls; one person’s sepia Mellotron memories amidst the intangible daydreams of many.

It seems part of a continuum of Pacific Northwestern pastoral darkness. One feels this spirit manifested in Twin Peaks and Silent Hill; and that the shadows between the trees have been a scrying mirror for souls.
