Frederic Leighton 1830 – 1896 was a Victorian painter.
His home in Holland Park is open to the public.
It contains many drawings and paintings.
His house was luxurious, he entertained guests often.
Only his bedroom was tucked away and was very modest.
He was well off, travelled often
and added to his house
the Arab Hall,
He built it 1882
‘for the sake of something beautiful
to look at once in a while’
It caused a sensation.
Leighton had the tiles and textiles brought over
from North Africa and the Middle East.
For Frederic Leighton,
drawing was like a science.
He drew his models first nude ,
then ‘dressed’ them
after he studied the flow of the dresses on women.
A garden at the back of the house
was perfect for a break.
He recalled his parents' requirement
that he only pursue art
if he could achieve eminence.

The Red House was owned by by William Morris,
an artist known for his wonderful patterns.
I determined
to do no less
than to transform
the world with beauty
William Morris
The only house commissioned,
created and lived in by William Morris,
founder of the Arts & Crafts movement,
Red House is a building of extraordinary architectural
and social significance.
Red House boasts original features
and furniture by Morris and Philip Webb,
stained glass and paintings by Burne-Jones
and embroidery by Jane and Elizabeth Burden.
Coupled with bold architecture
and a garden designed to ‘clothe the house’,
they add up to a fascinating and rewarding place to visit.
Designed by Philip Webb and completed in 1860,
it was described by Edward Burne-Jones as
‘the beautifullest place on earth’.
The rooms at Red House give a unique view of William and Janey’s life
and the establishment of what later became Morris & Co.
The garden is beautiful
unfortunately it rained heavily,
so we couldn’t sit out there.
At Oxford in the 1850s, William Morris and his close friend
Edward Burne-Jones discovered
Geoffrey Chaucer an English poet and read his works together.
Morris later referred to Chaucer as "my master"
and adapted the poet's stories
into stained glass and textile designs.
In 1891, Morris founded the Kelmscott Press to revive medieval bookcraft.
The ultimate goal was to print the complete works of Geoffrey Chaucer.
Only 438 copies of the monumental work were produced.
The volume stands as a towering achievement of the Arts and Crafts Movement
and the crowning glory of Morris's life,
as he passed away just months after its completion.
As it happened
we went to a bar in London, the ” Bookingoffice 1869″
and on a table were the Canterbury Tales,
a huge book (reproduction) by Geoffrey Chaucer.
We were so excited.
So I can show you the beautiful illustrations by William Morris.

It was very interesting what we learnt
and can only recommend to visit the Red House.

Through my friend Sally in Cornwall I heard about Twigmaid
a smaller version of the Mudmaid in the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
The courtyard behind St Martins-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square
was transformed for the Lost Oasis. Click on the word for the link.
This Heligan-in-the-City is a beautiful green retreat
in the heart of London with a bar, guest chefs, music and events.
I have been there yesterday noon, enjoyed a wonderful Cornish burger
in the sunshine with music.
It was a great tasting burger.
The Twigmaid is fantastic.
So beautifully made.
It was a wonderful day in the city.
Do visit if you can. It is on til August.
They do walk- ins as well if you cannot book.
Every day is so much to be thankful for.
