Ever opened a standard and wondered, "Am I supposed to follow all of this?" Our latest article will help answer that question by exploring the two broad types of standards you'll come across. On the one hand, specification standards, which set clear requirements that organisations are required to meet. On the other, guidance standards, which provide practical advice and best practice on how to achieve a goal. Think of them as the “shall-do's" and the "how-to's". It’s an essential distinction to understand to help you identify the standards that are right for you and your organization. Whether you're looking at quality management, risk management, sustainability or workplace wellbeing, it's a useful starting point on any standards journey. Our latest article breaks down the basics in plain English. It explains why understanding the distinction between requirements and guidance can save time, reduce confusion and help you get more value from standards. Who do you trust when everything feels uncertain? It's a question worth asking. In a world of AI-generated content, misinformation and growing scepticism around business claims, trust can take years to build. And moments to lose. Yet it's often the factor that determines whether customers buy from you, partners work with you, and stakeholders back you. The good news? Trust isn't just about reputation. It's something you can strengthen through transparency, consistency and independent proof. That's the theme of our latest article, ‘No place to hide: building trust in the age of uncertainty’. It explores what trust means in today's business environment, why it's becoming harder to earn, and how standards, certification and independent validation can help you build credibility when it matters most. As a BSI Member, you're already demonstrating a commitment to recognised best practice and continual improvement. In a world where trust is becoming harder to win, that's a powerful message to share. 🤔 Standards know-how: Chains of Standards. When one standard Isn't enough. It's easy to assume that buying a standard gives you everything you need. Not always. Many standards are part of a wider chain of standards. One document relies on others to define key requirements, testing methods, terminology or safety rules. How can you spot this? Look for phrases such as: 📌 "This document should be read in conjunction with..." 📌 "As specified in..." 📌 References listed under Normative references. A few things to remember: ▪️ You may need more than one standard. Documents listed as normative references are mandatory requirements, not optional reading ▪️ Compliance depends on the whole chain. If a standard requires testing or activities to be carried out in accordance with another document, that requirement forms part of compliance. ▪️ Check the version carefully. Referenced standards may not always be the latest edition, so it's important to use the version specified and stay alert to updates. Understanding how standards link together can help you avoid unexpected costs, prepare more effectively for audits, and achieve compliance with confidence. After all, real compliance means following the whole chain. Not just the first link. Read more and learn more detail here: https://bit.ly/4frm97w

How do you strike the right balance between promoting sustainability progress and avoiding misleading statements? Many organizations are working hard to reduce emissions, cut waste and improve sustainability performance. But communicating those achievements requires care. Consumers are paying close attention. Research shows that 79% of consumers are more likely to buy from brands whose values align with their own. On the other hand, 54% say they would stop buying from a company found to have made misleading environmental claims. Meanwhile, regulators are increasing scrutiny of sustainability messaging. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority can now impose fines of up to 10% of global turnover for misleading claims. Our latest BSI Membership article explores: • What greenwashing looks like in practice • Why "greenhushing" can be just as problematic • The evolving UK and EU regulatory landscape • How standards can help organizations communicate sustainability claims with confidence The challenge isn't whether to communicate your sustainability progress. Rather, it’s how to do so in a way that's transparent, evidence-based and trusted.
