🗺️Look closely at the world's rangelands and a clear pattern emerges: a striking share lies within lands stewarded by Indigenous Peoples and local communities. In this map, the rangelands shown in yellow fall within Indigenous and community lands, adding up to roughly 1.4 billion hectares — nearly half of the world's remaining rangelands — kept intact by the people who have stewarded them for generations. Rangelands store vast amounts of carbon, support biodiversity and sustain the food and livelihoods of billions of people. And as #COP17Mongolia opens today, our latest piece explores why securing the land rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities is one of the most effective ways to keep rangelands, and everything they provide, intact. 👉Read more: https://lnkd.in/dgG6RzwP

☀️🥗What if farms could produce food and clean energy at the same time? Agrivoltaics involves incorporating solar panels onto agricultural land, enabling the simultaneous production of energy alongside crops or livestock. Places like the community farm at Roundabout Meadows in rural Virginia are already generating clean, affordable power through this emerging practice. 🔻🌳The world's remaining intact forest landscapes are shrinking. What's causing it? It changed over the past two and a half decades. From 2000 to 2013, timber harvesting was the primary cause of reduction, especially in the tropics, southern boreal and temperate zones, followed by agricultural expansion, particularly in the tropics. Yet since 2020, fire has become the leading driver. The increased impact is due to a combination of factors: 🚜Fragmentation and encroachment into intact forests from agricultural expansion, logging, mining, and infrastructure led to an increased fire probability 🧯While climate change has fueled hotter and drier conditions that enable larger, more frequent and more severe fires Question is: How can we protect these unique forests? 🌾Some of the world's most effective rangeland stewards are the pastoralists who call these landscapes home. Many are Indigenous Peoples and local communities whose stewardship helps keep the world's remaining rangelands intact. They safeguard the carbon these lands store, the biodiversity they sustain and the livelihoods they support. 2026 is the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists. As world leaders gather in Mongolia next week for #COP17Mongolia — the UN's summit on land degradation and drought — our latest analysis shows why securing pastoralists' land rights is one of the most powerful ways to protect these vital landscapes, and the people who have stewarded them for generations. ➡️Swipe through to learn more, and read our latest Insights: https://lnkd.in/dgG6RzwP

Freshwater underpins nearly every aspect of human and ecological well-being: providing drinking water, supporting food production, generating energy, regulating the climate, underpinning livelihoods, and supporting nearly 10% of all known species. New data and insights from #SystemsChangeLab show that growing pressures on freshwater are outpacing global action. The research finds that transforming the freshwater system calls for: 💧Minimizing disruptions to the water cycle 🏞️Protecting and restoring freshwater ecosystems ❌Reducing pollution, overexploitation, and invasive alien species 🚰Ensuring equitable access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene Explore what’s needed to transform the freshwater system: https://lnkd.in/gkZKmGHG 📃Research developed in partnership with World Resources Institute, the Bezos Earth Fund and UNEP-WCMC.

Extreme heat, wildfires, floods. Though named "natural disasters," they are anything but natural. So, what is our best defense against these disasters, damaging people's homes, endangering species and putting immense stress on cities? Our President & CEO, Ani Dasgupta answers: Nature itself. 🌎💧Freshwater sustains life on Earth — but growing pressures on the world’s freshwater system are outpacing global action, threatening ecosystems, economies and human well-being. New research launched today from #SystemsChangeLab finds that efforts to safeguard freshwater are not advancing at the pace and scale necessary to tackle the climate and biodiversity crises while ensuring sustainable development. Progress is lagging across nearly every measure. Transforming the freshwater system will require minimizing disruptions to the water cycle — including by protecting and restoring freshwater ecosystems — and tackling primary drivers of biodiversity loss, including pollution, overexploitation, and invasive alien species. It must also include ensuring equitable access to clean water. 📊 Explore the data from World Resources Institute, Bezos Earth Fund, and UNEP-WCMC to see where action is most needed: https://lnkd.in/gkZKmGHG
